Like anticipated, there will be two Lotus-Renault outfits next year !

    http://en.espnf1.com/renault/motorsport/story/36035.html

The Lotus Renault GP should look like this :

So that's it. No more real official Renault team. Carlos "cost killer" Ghosn struck again...Even if it seems that the diamond brand might still share a closer partnership with that team, yet I wonder what anthem will be played if it wins a race, I've noticed an union jack on the picture, so maybe...

Like Prost just said at the Atelier Renault party yesterday that was held to honour Red Bull racing championship : "We [France] have hit the rock bottom." No GP, no driver and no team...He thinks that might be a good thing as it could be an eye opener in the country. I'm not that optimistic...And "Le Professeur" isn't the most positive guy you can find...

Anyway, on the other hand, Fernandes' Team Lotus is set to fight to keep its name but seems to have changed its mind as far as sporting a Black&Gold livery is concerned. Less headache for the viewers and announcers then ; the Lotus Renault GP - Renault will be black and gold and the Team Lotus - Renault will remain yellow and green, phew !

Oh, but keep in mind that the Lotus sponsored indycar that is yellow and green is linked to Group Lotus (Lotus Renault GP) and not Team Lotus...Who knows, maybe it'll be black and gold next year, that would certainly make it easier !

The Renault team has always been a British team though - the roots are in Toleman F1, that was then purchased by Bennetton and then Renault - its always been run from Oxfordshire.

For all the fact that Team Lotus / Lotus Racing 2010 were made from scratch, at least they were founded in the Norfolk homelands of Lotus rather than somewhere with no connection to the brand.

I'd agree its a little weird that Group Lotus are trying to grab the old-style Lotus/JPS black and gold colours rather than letting Lotus Racing/Team Lotus have it, given the corporate colours of Lotus are the green and yellow - I was expecting Team Lotus to switch to the old 70s sponsorship colours to let Group Lotus / Renault take the ones that match their Elise GT (and all the rest of their company's) colours.

Actually, to go further than that - its a mad, mad move by Lotus' new ex-ferrari chief exec, they were getting free publicity by having Fernandes doing a good job with Lotus Racing / Team Lotus , so why they hell a company that has barely had any serious money for the last 20 years and relies on external investment for any new products now has the money to buy out a serious player in F1, I have no idea. They're going to drive Lotus into the ground for sure.

I still don't like that aerodynamic thingymajig that extends from the air intake to the rear wing.

Then rejoice as the F-duct will not be legal in 2011.

Oh, is that what it's called? I saw that term everywhere, but I'm not a huge tech geek. Anyway, I happen to think it's ugly, but that's just my opinion; I could be wrong.

Well, beauty obviously lies in the eye of the beholder but I'm pretty sure that most people would agree with you there.

And yes, the F-duct is the tube channeling air to the rear wing. It doesn't stand for anything though. McLaren, the team that first came up with it, wanted a cryptic name so that it would take other teams longer to understand what they were working on.

Doesn't look very tube-like, IMHO. Looks like a fin of sorts, but just one that dominates the rear half of the bodywork.

I will say that this year has provided lots of variety to F1, but I'm eager for next year.

Funny, I'd have thought that backwards-f shaped thing on the hood area was the F-duct. Oh, wait, that would make sense.

Next year we'll see adjustable rear wings instead...I have to say that I hate the idea, especially the rules regarding their usage. But at least it'll look better...

Really ? I thought Mc Laren actually called it the RWSD which stands for Rear Wing Stalling Device and it was a journalist who called it the "F duct" because he noticed that strange intake duct located where the F of Vodafone is as shown in the video you posted further below.

The F duct idea was again a really smart way to circumvent the rules, especially in the sense that whether a knee is a movable aerodynamic part or not was debatable...But the fundamental idea is anything but unprecedented.

Of course, when you want to get rid of the unnecessary amount of drag due to the rear wing, the first idea that springs to mind is to change the incidence of the flap, something various teams tried to achieve by adopting either "folding" flaps or even mounting the whole rear wing on a twisting support that modified the incidence of the whole part at high speed. In both cases, the pressure generated by the high speed flow was the trigger which led the FIA to thoroughly test the stiffness of those items.

Then there was the slot gap principle where the material flexibility was used to open the gap in a slot on the rear wing flap. It worked the exact same way as the current F duct system by disrupting the air flow on the extrados (the part where the depression occurs, the top side on a plane wing and the bottom side for a car) and one can think that the successful Mc Laren RWSD is a direct evolution of that except that the slot keeps the same size to abide by the rules.

Somehow, I think we may see something using the same principle as the F duct in the future; it wouldn't use the drivers body parts intervention to be triggered but maybe some profile redirecting a flow aimed at creating a tiny turbulence on the rear wing. I think it should be possible to activate this by calculating at which speed the static profile will redirect the flow where and how it needs to be to obtain that phenomenon. I could be wrong though. :p

I so agree with you there ! It sounds so artificial, a bit like doubling the goal size in football to have more goals...What we needed was good tweaks like increasing the ground effect and decreasing wing effect so that cars could follow each other more easily and then allow more battles.

Racing is about battles, being able to attack and to defend not just about completed overtaking moves. Especially in F1 where overtaking should remain a rather hard thing to successfully achieve, it's not 125cc motorbikes ! If viewers just want passing moves all the time, they can indeed watch tiny bikes or oval races...

And since the FIA wants to spoil the "fans" with loads of overtaking where the guy in front is just a sitting duck, why not follow the logic and put a button on each car that would disable the engine of the opponent in front. Plenty of overtaking moves guaranteed !

It was the German commentator on TV who said that McLaren wanted to use a cryptic name without any actual meaning.
I just tool that for as fact, but of course this might not be the whole story.

Actually, it's even worse than that, it's like doubling the goal size, but only for the team that is leading.

Aaaah, Le Raidillon de l'Eau Rouge !

Even in F1 sims like GP4, I sometime like to have a glance on the rear view mirror when reaching the summit ; it's such a great angle to look at other cars coming from La Source hairpin !

Anyway, a nice combo of videos that gives a good idea of the real potential of F1 cars that is often visually weathered down on TV.

The eventful start of 2009 :

Oh yeah. I mean, I knew they were fast. But that comparison makes it look like you need to be a f**king Jedi to handle one of those cars. No wonder so few drivers in the world can do it. They are literally freaks of nature.

It's remarkable. And as television coverage gets so much better, it really makes F1 compelling to watch. Can't wait for the new season to get started.

At last, some good news concerning one important technical aspect that affects the quality of the show and the competition.

You can tell I've been ranting about that through the whole 2010 season. :p

I'm not so sure it'll really raise the excitement, because everybody will still be on what is essentially the same "strategy".
With the re-fueling, you would get some who'd start with a rather empty tank in order to gain time quickly and then go for an early stop while other went for a full tank at the beginning, trying to make up for the lost time with one less stop...

But it would still be an improvement, so yeah...but the rear wing issue still pisses me off to no end. That tells me that FIA really doesn't care about the sport.

In a re-fuelling ban context, the ideal would be to have two very different compounds and the freedom to use whichever you want.

"I'm gonna push like crazy on three soft tyres stints" vs "I will nurse my hard tyres and just make one pit stop."

But kudos to Pirelli for making that move in the right direction in a regulation frame they don't choose anyway.

    Speaking about Pirelli...
