I'm not a Barca fan, but it was hard not to appreciate an organisation that in the face of rampant commericalism managed not only to have some moral standards but to push the boundaries of what could be achieved without selling out... until now; or to sum it up in terms of song lyrics your town's run by criminals , closed your clubs and sold you out for what? your town's run by criminals, they've sold you out they've sold you out your town's run by criminals, your town's run by criminals, closed your clubs and sold you out for what? your town's run by criminals, you're almost all, you're almost all that's left. (yes, I'm a bit drunk)
One morning I wake up and read that they are "studying" the idea of sponsorship. The next morning I wake up and read that it's a "done deal". When did they do the "studying"... overnight"? Isn't this something they might have considered having the "socis" give an opinion or vote on? When Rosell and co. stepped in, they quickly dissolved Cruijff as Honorary President, stating Laporta should have put it out to a vote. I'm afraid that, like in all "politics", once in power, they do what the hell they want. REVOLUTION!
Hmmmm, do you think this a response to the supposed television deal that the Spanish clubs are agreeing on (or did they already agree to it?). I mean less money from tv, leaves the club looking for other avenues to generate income. I don't like it from a philo(Barca)sophical standpoint.
This is arguably the best month of football this club has ever played: 4 wins out of 4 in the league, 2 out of 2 in Europe. 26 goals for and 0 against.
it is quite amazing. It reminds me of playing keep a way on the playground as a kid where a kid just gives up chasing the ball around when I see some of the other club's reactions. That said, I do like even if it is just in stretches during matches when the opponent makes Barcelona work as it becomes even more amazing when Barcelona have to pick up their already amazing work effort.
Knowing that no titles are won in December or January or February, I just hope our team would keep their feet on the ground and not get too carried away by how greatly they are playing. I mean it's nice to peak, but it's no use if we let our level drop. I trust the club is professional enough to know this though.
I just hope they keep facing challenges as like in the Real Madrid match, when others talk a lot of stuff or try to bring out their best, it seems to spark on Barcelona to step it up even more.
Sneaking up on 500 posts. While at work I thought up a decent title for the next thread. Playing off that old saying There's no "i" in "team"... "The 2010/2011 Season Thread Pt. 2 : There's no "I" in "Balon d'Or" Btw, also notice that there's no "i" in "FC Barcelona", but there both "i" and "me" in Real Madrid. (or did someone mention this a few years ago?)
It's just a privilege to watch this team right now. It takes some luck to be successful at the end of the season, but this is an all-time great team in its best form. Pep's symphony.
Valdes's scoreless minutes streak must be getting pretty high, the last goal scored on him was Nilmar an entire month ago (13 Nov)! Last time a goal was scored on Pinto was in the CdR against Ceuta on 10 Nov. So Pinto's streak in actual days beats Valdes by three days.
There's no I in FC Barcelona but I bet we're the team with the highest number of first team members with an I in their name in La Liga. Only Jeffren and Puyol lack and an I.
Wait, don't all the Catalan players have an "i" in their full family names? Carles Puyol i Saforcada Gerard Piqué i Bernabeu Víctor Valdés i Arribas Josep "Pep" Guardiola i Sala
Haha maybe so. I just lazily checked the names as announced in the official site (couldn't remember Maxwell's full name).
Messi also has "io" as Italian for I and "one" as a sign of self-centerism. Also his number, 10 can be seen as "io" = I.
when they brought up the huge debt that Barcelona have, I am curious what exactly is causing the debt? Is it just the salaries for the players? I was just curious as the new sponsor thing is happening and I had never read all the various things that have been contributing towards the debt.
I'm a little late to comment on this, but I have to say I hate this Qatar Foundation logo on the shirt deal. On the surface, I can see how it seems to fit in with FCB's 'mes que un club' philosophy. But it boggles me that a supposed non-profit would have 150m euros to throw away--on what exactly? Why does the QF need to spend millions on publicity? If it's a non-profit org, it should be trying to minimize overhead costs to dedicate the maximum funds possible to do its social projects. It's an organization whose main benefactors are probably not buying soccer jerseys. If I were Rosell, I'd tell the QF folks to just send the 150m straight to UNICEF. 30m per year, after all, amounts to one crappy signing a la Chiggy we can probably avoid through better judgment and planning. But we shouldn't be surprised. "Development" projects always seem to be about maintaining its own infrastructure and humanitarian morality than actually making real change in the world. Just my 2¢.
I think Qatar is literally trying to buy goodwill. That idea seems so antiquated, like something out of the 18th century. BTW, what is the full story on Pep's playing time at Al-Ahly Doha? All I know is that he loved it there, loves the place, and spoke up for them in their WC bid. A really good conspiracy theory could be cooked up from all this.
With the money (150m?) we could do a whole lot though. I mean while it's understandable to criticize the decision, also the upsides can be viewed. The money is not going to go to transfer budget, but it is for the club that pays the transfers. It's like we give QF a right to stamp their logo on our shirt. It's like QF gives us 150m money. You could buy Pastore and Cesc with that money and a lot would've not been spent. Or you could invest money in developing La Masia in numerous ways. Bottomline: is it worth it to not make the deal? Maybe. Maybe not.
I am confused too. It seems to me that the people that run this foundation are just trying to legitimate their country as a viable host for the 2022 WC, which is doubted by rational-minded people everywhere (ie everyone not on the FIFA executive committee). What better brand to identify themselves with than FCB?
rational-minded?! Who are they? if they have the money to build infrastructure to host I don't see a problem for them to host it. Brazil, Russia, the Gulf states, China are future economic powers. The sooner those rational minded people realize things will never be the same again, the sooner they can move on and stop whining!
IMO, Rosell has sold out the shirt. Yeah, we're in debt, but look around the world: who isn't? Since the size of the shirt deal seems to be stunning for a lot of people, put it in perspective: this is perhaps the greatest soccer team every assembled, the shirt has never had a sponsor on it, and Barcelona is one of the most recognizable brands in world soccer. Of course a sponsor deal is going to be a record-smasher figure. In fact, I think a corporate business sponsor, had we been looking for one, might have ponied up 40-50m euros/year. The visibility and positive 'synergistic' possibilities are unprecedented. I know I'll never buy a Barça jersey with a sponsor on it. In fact, my last Barça shirt is a Kappa. Guess I'm still bitter about the Swoosh.
