RIP, AC St. Louis. What a sad, stupid story. The players and fans deserved better.

I guess I should try to work up some enthusiasm for the Sounders now. Sigh...

Sorry guys. I had really hoped that both AC and Minnesota would be back. Here's to hoping for the swift return of pro soccer in STL.

Sorry all. It's a real shame it had to go down like this in STL. I feel so bad for soccer fans up there. Jerked around by MLS for years, finally get a D2 team and then it turns out the guy behind it all was a bum.

I guess this is what the new D2 standards are intended to prevent, let's hope they work. I don't want to see any more solid markets lose their teams.

Damn, loved that AC crest too. Hopefully sometime soon pro soccer returns to to St. Louis.

As a fan who lost a local pro soccer team, I can really feel your pain. Sorry to hear about you and your soccer fans in general losing BOTH AC St. Louis & St. Louis Athletica this year. I hope some new owner(s) can bring pro soccer back to St. Louis because ya'll deserve better than that moron Jeff Cooper.

Not sure they are dead. AC St. Louis came out with a statement on there facebook page.

AC St. Louis would like to state that despite unsubstantiated reports to the contray the club has yet to make any final decisions with respect to their participation in the upcoming 2011 season. These reports apparently stem form the club’s decision to not renew club options in the contracts of some players.

One AC STL fan made a comment on the IMS post saying that whether they're back or not, he's done with the team. I'm interested to hear how the rest of the fans feel.

I think a lot of us are just exasperated. I know the individual that made that post and he's frustrated. If AC returns we'll all support them, but we're also going to make a better effort to support the Lions too.

We're tired of the roller coaster and being lied to. We all want AC to survive.

Right now I feel about the same, I'm done with them. But I do want the team to be back because I loved the games and the players, but the FO has been very difficult to deal with in the past. But, I know that if they announce they'll be back I'll be very excited and 100% behind AC again.

The off season sucks. Its a lot easier to deal with the FO and listen to their bullshit when we get to go to the game later that week. Now its just listen to their bullshit and get nothing back at all.

Sadly, that's kind of the model for all minor league soccer teams in his country--even the good ones. If just one of these NASL teams could make an effort to bring the feeling of pride we get for our team at the start of the season into these desolate months, I would feel a lot better about continuing to support them.

I have a hunch that something official will materialize this week. If it's to state they will fold or survive is the question. This team is not dead yet. Hanging by a thread, maybe, but not dead.

I've heard that a deadline was set for Dec. 1st. Not sure if there is any truth to it or not, but it makes sense. I mean there has been nothing done for next season yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the team takes 2011 off and comes back in 2012.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the St. Louis Lions move to USL Pro and actually replace AC St. Louis at Soccer Park...maybe not in 2011, but in 2012.

Right now there are about 700 reasonable ideas as to what could happen with AC and the Lions, but there's no information as to what's going on or what could go on.

So...many of us will spend our waiting days with the Piasa.

I have a feeling that the Lions will do that in case AC fold

I know that IMS is a reputable soccer magazine, but this type of negative doomsaying is part of what hurt AC St. Louis this past season. Now, even if the team gets it together and puts things together for this coming season, there will be a negative feelings in the St. Louis area to keep fans away from the soccer park. I just wish that some of these "reporters" could wait for some sort of official word before reporting their stories.

So tomorrow is supposed to be some kind of deadline, right? Anybody think we'll actually hear anything?

I agree with you, but I'm glad that IMS posted it. Even though it was false, or at least not true yet (whatever it is), it did force the FO to actually say something which was nice.

Actually I thought about what you said a little more. It may hurt some but I don't think it would really hurt too much. If we have big enough soccer fans to read blogs like IMS then they would have probably already attended games and realized that its a shaky situation to begin with.

I think if you had asked everybody in attendance at the AC home opener what BigSoccer is, at least 9 of 10 would've had no clue. The IMS story isn't going to hurt at all because only weirdos like us are paying any attention to this stuff - and let's face it, we're all going to go to as many games as we possibly can.

I'm thinking (and hoping) that if we move forward and exist next season there will be a fresh start. New ownership will bring some changes to at least some of the front office and hopefully allow some more money to be spent on marketing and just a general change in attitude. We should be able to bury all the old problems with the past and have a little optimism.

Undoubtedly we've lost some momentum with this state of Limbo we're in but my bigger fear is that we don't get anything worked out for this season and have to sit out 2011 with the hopes of coming back in 2012. I think a year out of the league would kill a large part of the fanbase.

BQ over at IMSoccer News has turned out to be a very astute and very accurate reporter. Rest assured, if he posts an article saying that a franchise is going away, he's got some credible sources to back him up (though he might not reveal them in the article itself).

It's not the job of reporters to make sure things go well for soccer team owners who don't have things together, and it's not better for soccer fans if they keep silent. Without BQ, AC STL would likely have said nothing about their current status, and without his reporting all year the club higher ups would have had no accountability.

I know this may sound harsh, but as someone who supported the Thunder, a club whose owner was a lying crook, I could not appreciate this sort of article more. Without this kind of reporting, our fan base would never have known what was going on behind the scenes at our club.

It may seem like reporters in this position are harming soccer in the US, but trust me, they're not. More accountability is always going to be better for both the hardcore supporters and the more casual fans in the stands.
