Sorry but I don't think Sasho called off the dogs, at all. Maryland looked completely out of sorts and got dominated in the second half. Some great defensive plays to preserve their lead but Maryland is not good enough to take their foot off the gas against North Carolina (they're very evenly matched).

I will be interviewing Farfan in the next day or two so I will ask him his thoughts on the play and if or what the ref said to him.

    Retired or asked to retire?

    Here's the release from State.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see who replaces him. It will be a very coveted job but I won't be at all surprised if Yow replaces him with someone with ties to Maryland like Russell Payne.

While Tarantini was often someone who made me cringe, he gave a lot of his life to college soccer and helped produce some very good national team and MLS players so for that and his service to the college game, I thank him.

And we'll always remember him with the 8/9 game in the ACC tourney being the Tarantini Invitational.

We then have to disagree. Md never went forward and WITH A MAN UP! in the 2nd half. Come on now,.... Seriously Sasho had the kids go into a defensive shell and it nearly cost the team. When Md played agressively in the first half they were dominant and quite frankly that first half was a mirror to the loss down in Chapel Hill where Md out stat the heels but came out with the L.

    Yes, yes, no.

I have spoken to a few people around the NC State program at the ACCT asking when Popik was going to replace George and I got some cagey looks. Now, it makes sense. I've noticed that Popik seemed to be leading the team already and that George was more of a figurehead.

I would like to say I would be shocked if they gave Dan the job, but they kept George around way too long so shocked doesn't come into play.

Dan is a nice guy, recruits ok too. But for a guy who has been instrumental to the program the past 6-7(?) years, to give him the job would be a mistake. They haven't been a consistent contender.

There are plenty of guys that would be available, some with State roots, some with ACC roots or national team experience.

Promoting an assisatant within the ACC has mixed results.

Vidovich (under sadly unique circumstances), Gelnovatch and Bolowich were all promoted assistants and they each have a national title and multiple trips to the Final Four. Of course, that was a long time ago and college soccer has changed a lot since they were all promoted.

The most recent assistant coach promotion in the ACC is Mike Brizendine and that hasn't exactly been a roaring success, so far. (Hopefully he turns things around next year.)

I wouldn't be shocked if State promoted Popik but I'd be surprised just because there are so many quality college head coaches out there, along with a lot of quality people with ties to State and the ACC, who'd love to coach in the ACC.

BTW, what are Scott Schweitzer and Dario Brose up to these days? I wouldn't be surprised if either of them showed interest in the job.

Hey how about Jeff Rorhman, ? Fits the bill quite well. Some D1 experience and several years as Sasho's assistant.

You have Leo Cullen one of the up and coming assistants at Army who played for Sasho also. If Russel Payne gets the job then Cullen would probably get the Army job.

One thing about Debbie Yow, she's shrewed and she'll get the NCS soccer program jumped started for certain.

Army went 3-12-2 this year. Is that the springboard to an ACC job ? Tab Ramos ? No collegiate coaching experience at all and no experience coaching other than youth. The best hire is a mid-major coach with lots of success under his belt building a program. Kelly Findley, has some NC contacts from time at UNC-Charlotte/Charlotte Eagles, seems to be a good choice.

As a UMD student, I can attest that Debbie Yow never showed any outward support for the men's soccer program here. Any movement was either done by the Sports Marketing department or by Sasho Cirovski himself.

Payne and Cullen were at Army the first year this year. U expect miracles, I can tell you Payne knows what he's doing. He'll turn it around. As for Cullen, he could be a possible heir to the Maryland job (With Payne as well) when ever Sasho calls it. Debbie Yow knows about those men.

As for the one poster saying Yow didn't support the Soccer program. That's a pile of bull. Sasho is a tireless worker but without Yow doing the hiring and helping with the fund raising, there would be no Maryland soccer the last 17 years. Plus I know Sasho is VERYWELL compensated by Maryland. And I expect Maryland to open their wallets again with Sasho and his contract after the season. And yea I expect Sasho to have a barganing chip on the table at the end of the season called a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Don't know if this was mentioned, but Kofi Agyapong is transferring from Wake after only a year. Didn't play at all this year, though at the beginning I think he was suspended for a bit for violating team rules, apparently. Don't know anything other than that except that he was supposedly on a lot of money.

I wonder where he'll transfer. I know he considered Harvard, but that was when Clark was still the coach.

I haven't seen him (except for some ridiculous high school soccer game clips where he was playing on horrible fields against worthless competition), but Wake was crying out for the type of player he supposedly is this year. I don't know if it was an attitude/doghouse issue, or what, but it always seemed to me that there was too much talk about this guy, but that was just a feeling. Anyone seen him play much? Maybe he is really nasty and just didn't get along with Vidovich.

Payne/Cullen may know what he is doing but hasn't done enough to run an ACC program that has been in and out of the NCAA picture for the last decade. Needs a couple years to learn how to manage players, build a program, and show success in building a program. The ACC is not a place for unproven assistant coaches. You either hire a long term guy if your program has major success from within with Eastern European ethnicity :) (Gelnavatch, Vidovich, Bolowich) or a successful coach from a mid-major (Sasho, Noonan, Kerr, Kelly). Pretty simple formula that is proven to work.

One name that may surface in addition to Kelly Findley, is Bobby Muus from Denver. 2nd NCAA Tournament appearance in three years with NC contacts from Wake. Smooth salesman on the recruiting front.

Muus sounds good. Think he might be making an attempt to build the program at Denver though.
