Its looks like a neat stadium. Unfortunately clicking around the vitrual stadium it looks like obstructed views could be a big problem in a couple sections. Around the press box especially. Still looks very solid and one of a kind-ish.

Those seats aren't even made available to season ticket holders and I'd be shocked if they sold them at all, so there will always been a few empty seats in the stadium is my guess, even if it's sold out. Nobody wants to pay money for those and nobody wants to read an article in the paper about the fan experience of the team they own being "I couldn't see half the field"

Oh, btw, that isn't the press box, those are the luxury suites.

In reality, the Blazers, who are run by Vulcan, wanted to stall and destroy the Beavers' accommodation because Vulcan is a part of the Sounders ownership group and they really wanted to stick to the Timbers.

    LOL :D

It came down to guarding the development rights to the area around the Rose Garden, and more importantly the Memorial Coliseum site.

the renovation of pge is the definition of a mixed bag.
the new east and south structures are fine.
the artificial surface, the 'bowling-alley' configuration of the field of play, and the obstructed views in the old grandstand are considerable headaches.

headaches that could not be fixed no matter how you look at it. the obstructed views are an innate problem with PGE, the design of the luxury boxes and the placement of the goals makes it impossible to not have some obstructed views. same goes with the roof support pillars.

im not really sure what you mean about "bowling-alley configuration", its an enclosed field with stands on all sides (south side being only a few rows due to the stage). if thats your definition of bowling alley configuration than most stadiums are the same way.

the artificial surface is an evil necessity, born of the fact that the stadium is shared by football (which TEARS natural grass fields to shreads) and soccer as well as the fact that the stadium is below the water table/street level and drainage is an issue. everyone wants real grass, it just isnt feasible.

PGE Park is going to be rockin. I'd rather take their stadium over some of the older SSS's that we now have in the league.

Zoidberg is right, ANY sss is a good thing in America.

yes, it couldn't be avoided, once it's decided that portland gets a franchise. i didn't mean it's anyone's fault in particular, just that these headaches could impact the new franchise a bit.
'bowling-alley' refers to the narrowness of the playing field. we've discussed it at length previously, so rather than make another wooden restatement, i decided to be extremely witty and compare it to the width and shape of a bowling alley. :p
some people think it's not much of an issue, and point out that similar configurations pop up even in some of the tinier, inner-city epl venues, for example. personally, i still think that if there's one thing that makes attractive soccer tough to do, it's lack of space. i can't stand small fields and am sorry to see a new one come into the league, just when kc finally makes the change for the better.

Are you seriously bitching about a field with a width that is ok for FIFA tournaments? really? If it's good enough for Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying, it should be good enough, seriously. This shit ain't 65 yards. It's 2 yards, TWO less than many many fields. Most people on here are 2 yards tall, give or take. That barely changes the quality of play at all. 65, sure, 70? bullshit.

no, i'm not 'seriously bitching.' it's not worth that. but you do get that width requirements are within a range, the lower end of which gives you a narrow field. after which, if when you're watching how a game is played your eyes don't tell you the difference, you can be happy as a pig in the mud. ;)
this sentence is a masterpiece. :)
(it's also a lot more than 'two yards less' than many many fields.)
anyway, bitch on if you care to. without me.

    110 x 70 yards.

A typical pitch is between 110 to 120 by 72 to 78 yards, although most pitch widths are closer to 74 yards. As I'm sure you know.

    110x70 yards = 101x64 meters

FIFA WC standards are 105x68 meters = 115x74 yards

So yeah, it is pretty narrow (2 yards less on each side), which is too bad when the pitch is brand new.

I"m surprised by how much negative responses this stadium is getting. I think it is going to be easily the most unique ground in MLS, and will be an absolute cauldron. Hopefully I can get out to Portland next summer and catch a game.

It'll be so narrow that you could throw a tennis ball from your side of the stands to the other side of the stands.

    LOL

It's centered to illustrate how narrow the pitch is going to be in PDX.

Hope no West Ham United fans are reading....

    Portland Timbers, PGE Park – 70yds x 110yds

    West Ham, Boleyn Ground – 70yds x 110yds
