The telling factor to me was the quality of the crossing. Good balls getting hit in for a change. I felt like the athleticism of Ashe and Cruz was important in pinning SJ back but that their actual contribution to the offense was slight. Ashe needs a right foot (they know he's trying to cross lefty so they favor that foot and in doing so also make it harder for him to beat them endline). The real difference was backliners like Chabala getting forward and hitting their crosses for them. But Ashe and Cruz did their job by pressing them back.

Deric did fine but was not tested much. He didn't pull a Caig but you'd need to put him in one of these games where we're getting shelled to know what he really can do.

The win is nice -- always good to have Dynamo games that don't leave you wanting to throw things at the TV (even if you don't break the flatscreen with the initial impact......maybe you break it when it tips over.......) -- but I wonder if we'd rather have the draft position. It was good to see some different people get a chance......and surprise, the "worst Dynamo lineup ever" won the game. To which I'd say, sometimes it surprises you who your best 11 game players are, and sometimes qualities and chemistry matter more than the name on the jersey. I think that we are more frightening for most teams when we have some speed on the field, even if the players on the field seem less quality, because the speed forces the opposition to stretch and defend, something putting our slowest 11 composed of former NTers like Mulrooney does not do.

Side note: must have been a good week for the Texans SC, who got Deric on the Dynamo field in goal, as well as both wings (Shea and Holden) starting for the NT. They were my youth club competition but I have to respect that that's a decent accomplishment for one youth club in oft-overlooked Texas.

You don't think putting Deric in goal was by accident. I am sure Dom thought about draft picks also putting this starting lineup in. I am sure he said if w win, we deserve to win with this lineup.

Was he the next goalie messiah? No,but I'm willing to give Deric some more credit than he's gotten even after the alcohol wore off and a new day has started. The only reason I say that is b/c there were two balls that came in low and went through our defense from outside of the box (especially that last one Wondo sent in) that I think would've easily gone in had Pat been in goal. Also he had a lot of good passes from the back that found players in a good position to create a fast attack not just kicking it to a random spot or to the other goalie. We showed for the full 90 we wanted another goal and I think even Deric contributed to keeping his fast pace off the goal line rather than bleed the clock as much as most other goalies would've done in his situation.

For those who are lovers of stats and records, Tyler Deric made one yesterday:

I also used to think we had bad luck, bad karma, but after so many games with bad karma, right now I just think everything is wrong, the quality of the squad as a whole has diminish from previous years, some of our players that on paper are quality players, are just getting older or are not in the zone anymore, our coach has no idea of what to do with the current corcumnstances.

It happens, it even happens to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munchen.

We suck, we suck big time, we also have 2 championships, next year we will also suck, luckily, we will suck less and hopefully, in 2 years, we will be good again, but I do think we will never be one of the best of the league, I'm OK with that, I have never liked those huge teams that buy championships, I prefer teams that wait for those years in which doing things the right way, working hard helps so that everything falls in place.

We already had 2 seasons in which everything falled in place, if you believe in karma, I still think we owe at least one bad season.

I'm fairly certain that the San Jose color guy, John Schrader, was going to go down to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office after the game and try to press felony charges against Cam Weaver.

We don't know how good we have it with Glenn Davis, cautious commentary or not sometimes.

Three things that come to mind about last night.... they played with a confidence that has been lacking at times this year. Their passes were crisp and accurate, and they played aggressively. But didn't it seem too that a lot of the free balls went straight to the Dynamo? That kind of luck we haven't had this year.

And on a negative note, we still have a lot of trouble scoring.

Oh, and SJ looked really, really bad last night. Why are they in the playoffs and we're not??

Thats not really true. Check the numbers. Tied for 5th in MLS. We have scored more goals than NYRB and Columbus. Goals against is what has killed our season.

Ok, but we sure do miss a bunch of clear chances. I guess that's what makes soccer fútbol.

We did have a couple of really high scoring games, though. Take those away and we would probably drop a lot, I'm guessing.

Like someone else said, we're not even competitive for the playoffs because of defense. 48 GA. Our GF is actually decent, and I don't think you can discount the 3-goal bursts just because they bump the total up. Now, what matters is that if you allow 1.6+ G/game then you start needing 1.7 G/game to be a winner. There's not a team in the league scoring 50+ goals. We have more GF than some playoff teams, but the worst playoff teams have allowed 33 GA (SJ has allowed 29). No playoff team has a losing record or a negative goal difference (that's new in MLS...it's not playing 30 games to eliminate 2 teams anymore). Defense wins championships.

I think you win more 50/50s when there's more youth and athleticism out there. When we play some of these slomo lineups with, say, Mulrooney in the center and Ching and Weaver up top, I don't know how we're expecting to win balls. Those games you watch us chase the ball.

One good thing about the win is SJ is a playoff team; we've only beaten 2 all regular season (RSL and SJ). Positive result (draft position quibbles aside) but that stat tells you a lot of work is yet to be done.

You haven't posted since 2009 and you decide to post this "brilliant" post???? Living in bitterness is no way to live.

Wow, you had to look me up? I'm flattered.

Just wanted to know what the perspective from Houston fans was on the thuggery by Cam on Busch, and was amused by some of the comments on the game.

No bitterness here, SJ is in the playoffs, even if it's only for one game. Sounds like there is a little bit of bitterness on your part, though. Get over it, there are more important things in life. Look forward to next year and hope your team has a better season.

    Ciao.

I think there was a lot of thuggery on both sides during the night. I didn't see the replays of the incident but I caught it real quick-looked like he was going for the ball. I would have been more upset about the Cam challenge on Busch late in the match.

If I was SJ fan I would be livid about the Hainault hand ball-that should have been a red and would have changed the complexion of the rest of the match.

We were only bitter when the entire team quit Houston and moved back to the overpriced, overtaxed state of California - oh, right, that didn't happen.

I'll go look in my closet and send you a few old 2006 & 2007 championship t-shirts for you
