Mixed it up with El Pastor before the game and had a Newcastle Brown and a Beck's Dark. Not the kind of beer selection Bello's has if you're a beer adventurer, but a great time as always with tons of NY fans. Not strictly pre or post game, but found some stands with Hoegaarden White Ale at the Arena. Had a really good meal at Iberia Tavern in the Ironbound after the game. Sat at the bar with a massive glass of red wine. Got some guidance from a friendly guy of Portuguese background next to me. A few people in Red Bulls jerseys including that guy who went to the game with his son. I had the Carne de poco à Alentejana (Pork and clams) and that was delicious. My father had Paella à Valenciana which was also nice and had yummy Portuguese sausage in it which has this smoky flavor. All very walkable which I love
Now that's what I call a "Pre/Post Game Food & Drink" report! Got me hungry already... and it's only 8:30 on the west coast...
I am continuing to work my way through this list. I had to quote it again in case newcomers have not seen it. I would rep this 20 times if I could, the selections have not disappointed yet. Today, we are heading to Iberia Peninsula for some pre-game grub. Then, I'll be heading over to El Pastor to wish a certain someone a happy birthday. May you age more like a fine wine than a fine cheese!
So I'm finally making it to my first game at the new arena this Saturday and reading through here it seems like you guys all hit up the local places pre-game. I was wondering, do people still hang out and tailgate in the parking lot like the days at the Meadowlands? A few friends and I are planning on doing that, so I was just curious.
So I just looked into it online and apparently that's no longer the deal here, so we shall enjoy the local eateries instead.
Might want to rethink your plan, there is no parking lot at RBA to tailgate at, which is why everybody usually heads over to the Ironbound district to eat/drink at the local bars and restaurants.
Just in case anyone didn't receive the e-mail from RBNY: Due to the Brazilian Day Festival in the Ironbound section of Newark, please allow extra time for travel tomorrow. Raymond Blvd and Jackson Street will be open however, please avoid Ferry Street from Filmore St. to Wilson Avenue as the roads will be closed to vehicular traffic. Traffic and Congestion are expected in the area due to the street closures. The Festival runs from 10:00AM through 7:00PM.
Hello Everyone: Hopefully I posted this in the right location.... I have tickets for the NYRB/Revolution match in late October, and I was wondering if someone could advise me on the easiest way to reach RBA from Penn Station. I will be taking the Megabus from Boston or Providence. First of all, which route should I take? How long is the commute from Penn Station to RBA, and how much time should I allow myself to get back to Penn Station after the match? Thanks in advance for the help! Good luck to you all this season - we've been out of it since May, so I'm rooting for attacking footy to win MLS Cup!
Please note that the stations in New York (Manhattan) and Newark are both called Penn Station. We like confusing people that way. If you're coming from Newark, you can either take the PATH train to Harrison (under a 2 minute trip, cost $1.75 each way), take the Newark Trolley (really a bus, it's free but subject to traffic, which can suck), or walk to the stadium through the Ironbound Section of Newark. The latter option is around 15 minutes, and you'll pass a ton of great places to eat and drink pre-game. From New York, you can take New Jersey Transit to Newark Penn Station ($4) and follow the directions above. You can also take a PATH train from 33rd Street (one block away from NYPS) to Harrison ($1.75, with a free transfer in the middle at the Journal Square Station). For info on food/drink options in the area, there's a thread here with a ton of great info.
Does anyone know of a way to purchase passes to the Bulls Corner Pub? I am looking for 4 passes for October 2 (against KC). Thanks.
I'm headin to the Saturday game, 2nd game for me this season since the opener against Chicago. Has the parking situation in Harrison gotten any easier since early in the season, or is it still better to park in Newark near Penn or the Ironbound?
the opener was also the last time that I parked in harrison. since then, I have been parking near el pastor. I couldnt tell you whether parking has gotten better in harrison, but it doesnt look like it. my advice would be to get there very early if you want to park in harrison, like 2 hours early.
Thanks for the info. I'm planning on catching dinner in the Ironbound, but i'm not going to park in Harrison, as its will probably still be a mess to get out even if i get in early.
Can we add a list of NYRB-friendly places in the Ironbound area here? I know of these two: El Pastoe Iberia
So my sister is finally coming to a game..She's coming from Manhattan though, & since I've only driven to the stadium, which is the fastest way to go from midtown??? Is it true that NJ transit is slower than the path from 34th street and transfers at Journal sq??? Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!
Said it in the other thread, but definitely stick with the PATH. The WTC stop goes directly to Harrison, but transferring is easy.
Path is more direct getting to the game. But getting out of the game the station is not equipped to handle crowds, so the wait can be pretty bad. I'd recommend taking NJ Transit from Newark Penn after, unless you want to hang around the ironbound for drinks or a late dinner.
Some of the places people have mentioned are in this video MSG put together about the impact of RBA in Harrison and Newark. http://video.msg.com/Home/The-Impact-of-Red-Bulls-Arena
Will away supporters be meant with anything worse than good-humored hostility at El Pastor or Bello's? I'd love to check out Bello's beer selection, and my gf would probably dig El Pastor, but I wouldn't want to go where I'm not wanted. (When I visited my friend in Portland who's a Timbers Army fan, he told me that anyone who traveled more than 175 miles to see their team play is welcome to come into their pub after the game.)
I saw a guy before the L.A. game wearing a Galaxy jersey at the bar in El Pastor and it wasn't a problem at all. A couple in Philly Union jerseys before that game in Bello's got chanted at for a few minutes but that's it. I don't think many people in either place take themselves seriously enough to actually get hostile and not share a drink with the visiting support. Hope you enjoy the game.
