Now that Detroit has its own MLS expansion sub forum here on BigSoccer, it's only appropriate to start its own thread for ideas on what to call the team, what a logo might look like, what colors they would wear, and what their kits would look like and how many.

Paste any and all ideas here. Open to all.

    Ideas include these:

    My preference:

Main uniform: Sky blue jersey, white shorts.
Second: Navy jersey, sky blue shorts.
Third: All orange or Navy and orange.

I've always thought our colors should be orange & navy. I think the primary kit should be orange shirts with navy trim, navy pants and orange/navy socks. The change kit should be the inverse: navy with orange trim, orange shorts and navy socks. I like the cleanliness of the white kit, but I'm tired of all MLS clubs having that as an away kit. I'd like us to still be in a color on the road, although with orange, we'd only have to change at Houston, Chivas, Dallas or Chicago.

    Michigan Bucks or Detroit Bucks
    Inter Detroit

Also for kit ideas, what about a Blackburn style kit : orange on one half, navy on the other, white lettering. Then, the away could be white with navy shorts and maybe a orange/navy sash (vertical or diagonal).

Another idea is to have it look like Monaco's with the colors split diagonally.

It's not an MLS Kit idea, but I thought I would post it anyway. Please use this logo wherever you want (as long as it's for the good of MCS).

I'm partial to the top one. Because it reminds me of my beloved Detroit Express. As for a name, it might not suprise you that I don't mind dusting off "Detroit Express". For the Euro-inclined...add FC.

    First, THANK YOU. ;)

Andrew and I have been trying to remember for ages who did this. We actually just had a graphic designer to redo the image in vector so we can scale it to any size. It looks identical to what you did.

    Again, thank you very much.

    No problem.

Sorry you had to have it recreated.

I just created a new version. Let me know if you want the vector version.

Those images look great! And I failed to mention that I too wouldn't mind the return of the Express. I wouldn't have the FC on it though, just Detroit Express.

Yeah if you could send me the vector of that to {PM the detail} I would greatly appreciate it. We are working with the Silverdome for some advertising and that logo would be great.

The name I want by far is Motor City FC. It's got identity and it fits the sport, plus MCFC sounds nice abbreviated.

Motor City FC seems to be pretty popular, but I have doubts. Something about it just doesn't sit right with me... it seems pretty weird not including the name of the city at all and it reminds me of the Motor City Mechanics, a minor league hockey team that operated during the NHL lockout. Here are my ideal names, in no particular order:

Detroit Olympia/Olympic: Pays homage to the areas Greek heritage as well as our sports history. A particularly nice fit for TSE, also works extremely well if Ilitch were to get involved. A nice compromise between a Euro name and an American name, too.

Detroit Arsenal: Also walks the line between Euro and American, a bit more explicitly "europoseur" than the former... would draw a lot of comparisons to Real Salt Lake. But the name totally works and draws on Detroit's history as "the arsenal of democracy", plus the branding opportunities are immense. I do wonder if Stan Kroenke would let us use the name though... some have suggested he still wants to rename the Rapids when he takes over Arsenal.

Detroit Express (FC optional): Nothing much to say here, just a resurrection of the NASL brand like we've seen elsewhere in MLS over the years.

Detroit City: Full on European, but also kind of fitting. Unfortunate KISS connotations aside, most English clubs who make use of the "City" moniker are industrial northern cities (Birmingham, Stoke, Manchester, Coventry) very much like Detroit.

As for the colors, only blue and orange will do.

If the team calls the Silverdome home, it would be kind of awkward to have a team called Detroit City that doesn't play in the City of Detroit.

that's true, but I kind of feel it's the same as calling the team the "Detriot Xs" when they don't play in Detroit.

Yea, but I think calling a team City is different. When you think of City teams, like Manchester, they play in the actual city. It infers that you play in the actual city. Man City actually play in the City of Manchester Stadium, so they are fully ingrained. We couldn't be Detroit City and play in Pontiac...just my opinion.

Motor City FC rings true to me. It's a name that immediately identifies the area, even the suburbs. The auto industry could end tomorrow and Detroit will still be known as the Motor City. Even that would be different than Detroit City since Motor City FC refers really to the fact that Detroit is part of Automation Alley, of which Oakland County is a part as well. With the Chrysler headquarters a stone's throw from the 'Dome, it would make more sense.

It's a good point, but I think it's semantics. One of Philadelphia's final name choices was Philadelphia City, which I thought sounded cool, even though they play in Chester. I think someone in the MLS needs to adopt the City moniker and Detroit is the perfect candidate. It has a lot in common with the Birmingham and Manchester. Detroit, like Philly, is a tough and hardnose city. I think Detroit City sounds imposing and cool. San Diego City or Phoenix City, not so much.

I also like Racing Detroit and Inter Detroit (makes sense with Windsor). I'm a euro-poseur though so I'm sure some people hate that idea. I love my team's new name, Sporting KC. Orange and Navy are great colors, but there are a lot of Navy's in the league.

I hope Detroit is one of the next expansion. It's a great city and sports town and as a Kansas Citian, I want more midwestern clubs.
