Paraguay will have trouble with Spain. Torres isn't going to go through this WC w/o scoring. As much as I respect the Albirroja, I can't see them winning their next match.

Congratulations to Germany. Fully deserved win.

The early goal did play right into Germany's strengths and into Argentina's weakness. But Germany played a very good game regardless. They comfortably dominated most of the 1st half, with Argentina unable to even venture into Germany's third of the field until 25 or 30 minutes into the game. The first half alone could have finished 3:0 for Germany and should have finished 2:0. Argentina did come out in the 2nd half determined to get back into the game but except for a 10 minute period or thereabouts, the outcome of this game to me was never in doubt.

I feel sorry for Argentina. Unlike most here, I am as impressed with Messi as ever, even if I had thought that he would find the net today and help his team overcome a Germany side that I have liked a lot in this tournament. Tevez tried hard but to me was not as effective as in prior games he had for Argentina in this tournament; most of the time he was unable to get through his marker and would cough up the ball instead. But Argentina's real problem in this tournament has been its defense, which always looked suspect and a midfield that was clearly no where the class of Germany's. Argentina's goalie is no Buffon either.

Anyway, I was very glad to see Klose score 2 goals to bring himself closer to the record for all time goal scorer in the World Cup. But Germany's best players today were Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Muller, and Ozil. With everyone else on Germany's team playing pretty darn good football too.

With Brazil going home, looks like Germany have stepped on top of the podium. The Germans attacked as a team and defended as a team. Stopped Messi from going to his left foot.

As a Latin American, I was happy with the fact that so many teams from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL made it through the first round... however, the way things are looking so far, it may be three Europeans in the Semi-Finals.

Wow. The phrase "bringing a knife to a gunfight" comes to mind.
    Well done, Germany.

I don't agree. Two very different games. Today I saw that they went down fighting to the end, even when it was a lost cause. They never stopped going forward, never stopped running and pushing and challenging for the ball, and arguing every call, and taking shots on goal. They didn't lose because they didn't want it bad enough, they just didn't play smart, and got their asses kicked by a better team that was better coached.

2006: Tied 1-1 between Argentina and Germany, Germany winning on PK?
How is it a repeat of 2006? Or do you use the term "repeat" loosely? Germany crushed Argentina, this was no 1-1 tie.

Good point. They handled the situation with class.
A minimum of theatrics from both sides. Very refreshing after the Brazil-Holland game, with Robben jumping into the air and flopping around on the ground for 90 minutes.

Congrats to Germany. Great game and team effort but Scheiwnstager was the main difference owning the midfield and wherever he showed up unmarked. He had two assists and involved in everything else. This was truly his shinning moment, in part thanx to his counterpart for hiding among his defenders. How many miles did Scheiwnstager covered in this game? How many his counterpart? How about the number of touches, passes??

    Scheiwnstager is the German Dagger.

Unfortunately it's the partisan toward Diego that's unsettling (not poking fingers at ASF, just answering a question). The shirt is always bigger than the player and coach.

Germany had a key midfielder suspended after their win over argentina in 2006, for completely bogus reasons. They lost in the next round.

Yeah, I expect Spain over Paraguay, but I was commenting on the other possibility. And if Spain wins, they'll have a stiff challenge against Germany, because they are not the same team from the Euros.

Spain better keep the ball away from them, and hope for some early luck that will frustrate the Germans, and then maybe the Germans will lose their composure. Today they played a great game, but of course things went their way from the start.

Right now I see Germany winning over Spain, I thought their defense was a weakness, but now they sold me on it.

How's Mueller's goal for some poetic justice?

Actually, the three key players of Germany's build-up, Ozil (Schalke/Bremen), Muller (Bayern) and Khedira (Stuttgart) have three different origins, however they are the three that have impressed me the most with their near-telepathic understanding.

They move on and we go home. Same thing.

But as much as it hurts to get your ass kicked, I think going out in penalties feels worse.

That's still a big question about this German team. As Klinsmann said, they haven't had to come back from a goal down yet in the knockout stages.
