How come Barrera didn't start? I thought he was the best player on the field in the second half.

I move that BigSoccer appends a 5th item to the error message:

    5. If you were posting into a WC'2010 PBP thread, the thread has probably been split, moved, or closed. It's not your fault.

    :p

Look, I am not saying that it isn't ALSO mexico fault. I think Mexico was like kids not being able to recover for a long time. I agree this is not world cup mentality

A deserved win for Argentina in spite of the offside goal. Mexico did well and should be proud in spite of that horrendous defensive mistake that lead to conceding a second goal.

Other than the terrible officiating (as usual), it was a good night of football.

Now, I find it very amusing how FIFA removed Lampard's goal from their highlights video on their site, along with how quickly they've been removing said goal and Teves's offside goal from YouTube.

Really now... if only you guys were as quick with implementing much needed technology as you are with covering your shameless screw ups...

Good middle that didnt stomp. Did play better at times but was not controlling at all times. Defense didnt work and had terrible moments like the one from Osorio, and forwards that just didnt come through. All in all, Argentina did play better and showed it on the score. Mexico only scored when the Argies started making absurd changes.

In my opinion the best team did win

Argentina won but I'm not convinced they are good enough to win the cup or even beat Germany. Mexico good late effort, another goal would of made things interesting. MU got a gem of a player with Chicharito. Barrera needs to play in Europe as well. No more CONCACAF:(

This referee BS is really affecting outcomes horribly. Unlike the English game, I think Mexico had more of a chance to come back. Argentina looked tired and way too defensive.

I expected much more from Mexico, They had a hard time putting anything together...they wasted 2 shots from way out in the end out of desperation,

its the same thing every WC, nothing but excuses on why they didn't win...

All ARG subs were in the middle trying to gain advantage on middle. Apart from Messi's tries I have not seen a single playmaker in ARG. Will be interesting to watch because Germany middle is a beast in this WC.

would Argentina beat Mexico without the ref's help? probaby...did it change the flow of the game...of course.

The "funny" was seeing the ref going to his linesman, seeing the replay on the screen, then trying to hear from his ear piece(whatever he was being told)and after that deciding to keep the goal.

Excellent teams create their own chances and convert.

Good teams convert the mistakes of others

Teams that go home do neither.

Today, Argentina was a good team + Tevez and Mexico is going home. Argentina controled the match, but did not look like they were hugely dangerous versus Mexico. They won the match because Mexico lost their heads on the missed offside call, and then quickly gifted Argentina.

That said, Mexico looked dangerous, but for their many opportunities, only converted one (and what a goal). This was a match about taking the opportunities. Argentina and Mexico did not.

Sounds like sour grapes. Messi was taken out by the constant hacking fouls on him by Mexico in the first half. With his reputation, no one is going to let him play. The space goes to the other players, then.

I agree you shot yourself in the foot, though: mistake of the cup...

Replays of suspicious situations are not shown on screens on stadium.

I imagine he wanted to change the call after seeing the replay but couldn't because...well you can't.

It's easy to say that Argentina was the better team on the day, but the Mexico prior to the offside goal were completely different to the Mexico after. I have never seen a professional team so shaken by one incident. Granted that they should have kept their heads, but the fact remains that they didn't.

I'm devastated at the impact that one incorrect referee decision had on the match. IMO the impact was more significant than the disallowed goal in GER-ENG, because it changed Mexico's play so profoundly.

This is the problem in argentina game btw. Maradona want's him to play as he did but he is clearly not up to the challenge. One of the problems in ARG game

Being up 3-0 usually makes you defensive. Sure, the first goal changed the tenor of the game, but that goes both ways. Just because they were on the defensive at 3-1 doesn't mean they would have been if that goal didn't stand.

As much as I hate to agree with our resident troll, Osorio wasn't thinking clearly. A bad call under this much pressure can be crippling. It's much better to give up a goal like Tevez' strike as the first goal. I think Juan wasn't even passing it, he just lost focus and the ball got away from him. Must've been thinking about something else. It's a shame, since he has such a good history with the Mexican team.

They're not supposed to be shown but they have been at times and reportedly today was one of them.

Interesting. Why did he allow the goal than? I mean sure he is not supposed to but if he can't do anything he just went for chit chat with side ref?

Well for one this is a report from the ESPN studio, I haven't seen anyone else claim it yet.

For two, the conference doesn't mean the refs saw it. It would have been nice if they had gotten it right regardless of how but for all we know they just missed it (badly) and the conversation was "are you sure?" "no, not really" "so I guess it stands" "I think it has to". then what do you do?

As for the rest of the game, Argentina was caught off-guard it seems but managed some possession to even things out a little before the goal. Some of the fouling on Messi probably should've earned cards - it seemed that after Rossetti took one player aside to say no more, Mexico was effective in getting other players to foul him and never got a card for persistent infringment.

It will be very interesting to see Ozil get behind Argentina's defense as Dos Santos was a little too absent for my liking here.

I thought the Ger Eng game was fairly clean regarding fouls; if Germany keep it clean in the next game, maybe Messi will have the chance to run further than 5 yards.

Just as the bad calls at the 1966 World Cup resulted in the system of yellow and red cards, the bad calls on this World Cup will hopefully result in the use of some form of instant replay.

    Big problem

Ref had to take it when he knew he called it wrong. More than anything fault of the line man.

All these bad calls will set for either more technology or more linemans ( I prefer the second) but it does make me sad to see these situations.

ANd I dont want to send inflamatory comments, but I thing these bad calls create more of a excuse situation than anything for teams like England, which although could have had a different result, I still think in both games, the best team won.

As much as I am old school and love the controversy, these WC has too much of it for my taste...
