    Buaaaahhhhhh !!!!!! :(
So much struggle and illusions, and great part thrown away by a childish mistake of our goal keeper, he wanted to emulate Colombia`s Higuita and he did it, almost to the perfection, giving the ball to one of the most dangerous players from the other team, Villa, then came the mistakes, the reiterative fouls, the exasperation and to put a "cherry on top of the cake", Estrada, makes himself expelled with a double yellow card, with the most stupid foul that I think I `ve ever seen in my life in the same play of Inhiesta`s, extraordinary goal.

Things could have been diferent if our team wouldn`t have fall in exasperation and started playing childish. Good grace, that once they came back to the second period, Bielsa put order in the team, regained their calmness and strategically oriented the game in another way and never really renounced to attacking, but given the circumstances and the great quality of our opponent, at least they scored a goal to give more justice to the final score of what happened in the field. Now we must think in our next "victim" :)D), I guess its time to go get the old record player, because we will have the put that damned scratched record once again for our second round game next Monday. Who knows ? , maybe this time that record plays the "Samba song" without repeating itself in the scratched part and for the first time we could be able to enjoy the song in it for the first time in a WC, who knows ?...............

I am sad but grateful, I must give my congratulations to my Spanish friends, since they won the game correctly, clean playing always and at the moment of the expulsion of our player were being superior to my team (us), and had already wrapped this victory.

I also want to say that the referee, Mr. Rodríguez did an excellent job, although I don`t think we deserved so many yellow cards, but the faults existed. I wouldn`t mind to have him again next Monday, who knows ? , maybe we could invite him to dance the "Samba" with us............

Great job Spain, you were the ones with the most pressure and you were able to get the job done and right some wrongs after the terrible Swiss result. Spain is still not in second gear yet in this tournament, too many missed chances and Torres is not playing up to his potential. The game today wasn't the most captivating, bar the first half, but now Spain will have to learn from their mistakes and reach a higher level if they plan to do something in this cup.

A referee coming to his senses in the 2nd half did not do an excellent job imo. His 2nd half calls were justified as he knew he was supposed to let things slide more, maybe he saw the replay of Torres play the led to a red card.If you invite him to your next match, you guys will get 2 reds instead of one :D. seeing how i'm assuming Chile will play much more aggressively against Brazil.

At this point, we must be the most yellow carded team left alive in this cup, so a couple of two more reds, will only mean that we`ll have more color, we`ll invite him then.....
who knows ?, if two yellows, turn into a red. Maybe two reds, turn to a yellow, another way of improving :D

Btw, I think that the referee`s we had in our three games, really didn`t had the inttentions to punish us, they simply were telling us the color of who we were going to confront in the second round, since they thought that we never understood the picture, they showed it to us repeatedly so we don`t forget.

The ref did a good job guys...in fact he spared us another red card on Ponce...and maybe a couple of yellow cards on Vidal. Estrada's clip was accidental though.

The problem in this match was that the younger guys loosed their cool after the first goal...they where clearly shoked by it and started to get a bit too agressive...we need to pressure them but without fouling, like we did before the first goal. This is not surprising considering the inexperience of some of out players. Hopefully we will learn from this, that's what this world cup is for.

As a positive note I'll take the attitude of the team in the second half...the first few minutes going for the match with 1 man down was excellent!

It was clear towards the end both teams settled for the 2-1. Some might say shamefull but it is only logical given the circumstances...Brazil and Portugal also did the same.

Congratulations Spain and Chile for making the 2nd round! You both deserved it and this was a great match for a neutral. Not a lot to choose between the two teams - the difference being the quality in the finishing. Chile had a couple of good chances in the first half which they didn't take and Spain finished theirs. The second yellow card was very awkward, didn't look like he touched him at all. with that said though, I think Chile played very hard in the first half and the red card was coming to either Ponce or Estrada. Kudos to Chile for not laying down and dying and rallying to get the goal that was necessary to put them into the round of 16 had Switzerland scored. I'm really looking forward to seeing both these teams continue in the round of 16 v Portugal and Brazil.

Spain did what they had to do in the first half and thanks to that they could afford to take their foot off the accelerator and not give us a late winner like the US gave us the other day! The goal that Chile scored did add some drama to the match, but in general the team played their cards the way that DB wanted. The end wasn't to pretty in terms of excitement but there must have been a 2 minute period where Spain strung at least 25 passes in a row on their side of the field while the Chileans were waiting on their side for them to advance the ball to that side of the field.

    Aupa Espanha!

Chile not only gifted Spain a 2-0 lead, but also a 1 man advantage. While the foul on Torres by Estrada was non-existent (as an aside, about the only positive thing Torres did all game), Estrada was lucky to still be in the game following his clumsy challenge a few minutes earlier.

Millar's goal minutes into the 2nd half had a significant impact on both games. Content with the 2-1 lead and not wanting to risk a tie and elimination, the Spanish took their foot off the gas. Knowing the Swiss needed to score 2 goals to eliminate them, the Chileans were happy to hold back. Lastly, the Swiss clearly pressed in the 2nd half of their game after they realized a 2 goal victory was needed.

Bottom line, the 2 best teams advanced and now each get to play foes they each know extremely well.

    Well done, Chile! :)

It's nice to see that a team with some finesse that doesn't bunker and counterattack all the time reaches R16. In the first half the ball was mostly on the Spanish side and Chile deserved to take the lead. Silly goalie, lack of cold blood in finishing and an unfair red card are the main reasons they eventually lost. Kudos to them that they didn't give up and managed to make it 1:2 and defend pretty well. The ending resembled a sparing when both teams were just waiting for the final whistle.

As for the Spanish armada these guys have some serious problems with their painful WC history. None of their games in the group showed even a glimpse of WC favorite. Since they had to fight for their lives in their last games after Swiss defeat it doesn't seem to be just a strength-saving tactic for the knockout rounds. I wonder why Bosque keeps playing with both Xabi Alonso and Busquets on the pitch as the lack of offensive activity could be amended by letting Cesc play a bit more. He didn't play a great game today but you can say the same about Kaka with IVC and that didn't prevent him from achieving 2 superb assists. The same can be with Cesc if he stays on the pitch a bit longer. It also seems that Torres injury did affect his touch.

That said, the main problem for Spaniards seems to be their mentality and if they manage to slide into semis their self-esteem should be rebuilt, preassure will become bearable and they will improve. The question is whether they'll be kicked out earlier or not.

    Just watching the game now...

A glorious passing combination by Chile in the 10th minute. Slippery pitch made the finish impossible.

First 20 minutes. Sloppy but adventurous. Full of vigor, if a few nerves as well.

Chile fouling a bit too hard. They need to be careful. That Ponce foul was awful close to red.

Another yellow. Come on guys. Don't bury yourselves. This match deserves to be even.

Ridiculous goal. You come out that far and don't put it out of bounds? And it lands at frickin' Villa's feet. Whoops. Clinically taken poach, to his credit.

    Fantastic recovery Pique.

Shoulder to Shoulder? I dunno. But seriously. Last chance, Chile. The ref has to be at wits end.

Another simple mistake that Spain strangles quickly into another goal. They're simply vicious. Exquisite 1-2 passes from Iniesta.

Spain remain my favorite for the Cup.

How did it get to this for Chile?! They were playing well. Getting opportunities. Why do they have to throw it away on not 2, but 3 yellow worthy offenses?! Dumb. With Brazil looming, you really want to go 2 goals and a man down to Spain?

This game has been umm... bewilderingly entertaining.

    And it lulls a bit.

One last hip check and we get a rest. 2-0 at the whistle.

Great work from the ESPN commentators in my opinion. Other than the complaints about the ref, a well called half.

The ref was fine. Chile earned what they got, discipline-wise. A little too much youth to top a group. Hoping they advance though. When they aren't playing rugby, they're pretty fun to watch. Plus, Brazil/Chile is much sexier than Brazil/Switzerland.

Welcome back to the 2nd half and shazaam! Such a quick stroke of luck! Deflection or not though, Millar had way too much space there.

2-1 and suddenly there's hope for this 2nd half.

52': And for the first time in the World Cup, I hear singing. However brief, it is joyous.

Doldrums. Not that they have any right to be called that. Spain being Spain. Some spendid defending from Chile, but this game needs a Swiss goal, which I sadly know it will not get. Even then, this is good football.

Subs and current tactics indictate the teams are probably ok with this particular result. Damn.

    Meh.

2-1 Final. Complete let down of a second half, if entirely understandable. These are two worthy teams though. Happy to see them both through.

If I would have been the referee, I would have also shown Estrada his second yellow card. He deserved it. I still wonder why Rodríguez, spared his life in the fault he had previously made, which also deserved the yellow card and was not shown, and I wonder why didn`t Bielsa change him before we had to suffer his expulssion, it was clearly that once he was spared, he wasn`t going to change his attitude. The fault he made that signified his second yellow, he ran towards Torres and made the fault appear as cassual as if by accident they touched their feet, it was totally stupid.

I hope that other players learn a lesson after this, football is a game, its not a battle field, where you must hurt your opponent. Even if you try to hurt others and not discovered, someday they will, and when this happens by your fault you are sending your team mates to doom, since they`ll have to do your work together as their own. In modern Football and specially against another good team, its too much advantage the one your giving your opponent.

In this match, Spain hurted us badly playing football, but we were still alive. Estrada, completed the kill by his stupid action. He shouldn`t play any longer for our national team, he deserves at least this punishment.

    Bad game of Chile.

We did play well only during the first 25 minutes, until the BIG BIG mistake of our goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Terrible.
Then Spain started dominating us, until the 2nd half.

Our best player was, AGAIN, GARY "Pitbull" MEDEL. He's my favourite Chilean player.
Congrats to Gonzalo Jara, Jean Beausejour, Alexis Sánchez, and for his goal, Rodrigo Millar.
But Bravo, Ponce, Vidal, Estrada, Valdivia, etc didn't do good things.
We missed Carmona in the midfield IMO. He's our best defensive midfielder.

The referee wasn't guilty of our defeat at all. Estrada deserved the direct red card some minutes before the 2nd yellow card. Ponce deserved red card too, and he only got a yellow card. Vidal deserved another.

Congrats to Spain, great game by Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta, David Villa, and great 2nd half by Francesc Fábregas.

And, of course, THANK YOU HONDURAS!:)

a seriously frustrating game for chilean fans, but i think we showed that we can keep up with the big boys and will give Brazil a serious run for their money. you never know.

For those complaining about the second half, Bielsa said that after they scored the 2-1 he thought they could tie the game. But Spain slowed the temple and started circulating in their own zone. Bielsa said that he couldn't send the players to attack the ball because too much space would be opened for Spain...so from then on, it was a 'tramite'.

Interesting to note that, even with 10 men, Spain was reluctant to attack us. True that they were winning and a tie would leave them out... but in a similar situation, Chile would just keep on attacking...

I hope Bielsa never leaves us.

OK, now getting back to our regular senses, the moment of anguish or sadness product of the recent defeat should stay back, I want to now give our National team the deserved congratulations for everything that the team has so far achieved in this WC, who really surprised us all, friends or not friends from everywhere around the world and of course, us, our always impatient, undergrateful, ambitious and always used to live in fantasy world, my countries fellow citizens, me included, because we really never expected to have had such a great performance, as the one our national team and our top one coach, Mr. Marcelo Bielsa, without whom Imho, nothing like whatever we are still living today could have been accomplished. THANKS !!!, thank you very much guys.

    VIVA CHILE !!!!

As a side note, Caturro, my brother, its true all that you are saying, despite all of the odds of this game, Chile kept always on foot its philosophy of play, and therefore we played a kind of game never to often seen, not even for us its own fellow country men. We played top one class of game that put our team where we humbly, won respect, and I second your thoughts about Mr. Bielsa, I also hope he never leaves us and as someone in another topic suggested, we should put a monument somewhere in our country on his behalf, he really deserves it.

Now we must wrapp up this performance, since our history here isn`t yet over, and again against all the odds we are facing, we must face our destiny. Guys, lets give Brazil a game that they will never forget, lets try to achieve the one victory that exceeds the countings of the fingers of one hand, and lets kick the "sh**" out of dearest friends from Brazil. We`ve already shown everybody, that although at an inferior level, we can still play well under pressure and that we never give up. Lets get....... BRAZIL,......and be the ones who`ll stop them and get them eliminated out of this cup......

    :)

That's the bit where I disagree with you...I think the youthfulness of our team was exposed after the first goal from Spain. A more mature side would have shrugged it off, kept the composure and maintained the level of play that we used to dominate Spain in the first 20 minutes.

Instead they lost their cool and starter going in too hard...the ref was kind to us as we could have ended with 9 players. This weak mental focus is our main weakness...it is something that can only get better with experience and in that sense this world cup will do wonders to the young players in our team.

I hope as well...but it won't happen, I think Bielsa likes cycles and he probably feels he has done enough in Chile, I hope I'm wrong.

All I'm going to say is...enjoy that Brazil v Chile match, regardless of the result...because it may be the last time we see Bielsa's fantastic 3-3-1-3.

Dude, Jara was the reason we kept getting outplayed on the left side. He was horrible I wanted Vidal to move back to that spot, Jara was too slow.

Bro, thats the problem with chilenos, the rat mentality we have been implanted won't leave us. We don't need to be proud we're exactly where we were expected to be before the WC. So we have not over acheived, but just acheived the goal that we had which was pass to the 2nd round behind spain. I may be too harsh but we need to change our mentality further and think we are a big team regardless of what the world thinks of us. Keep attacking, and hopefully bielsa notices our defense is weak but our game of 3-3-1-3 is super strong. Keep playing your game Bielsa, if we loose to brazil which is what is expected we'll go down with pride.

Entertaining game. Would love to see these two go at each other without the complication involved in a 3rd group games. Ref called one really solt yellow on Chile, the rest were deserved and the red card could have come a couple of minutes earlier. But what was us with Spain getting to retake their foul throw in. Thank God they did not score off of that.

In the end Chile defeated Chile with 2 horrible errors and Spain just happened to be the other team on the pitch.

    He was not diving.

Here you can see how the angle of his foot changed from one frame to the next after a contact with the Chilean player:

Then you can see that because of this he tripped over his own feet:

Y pensar que Villa NO debería haber jugado contra Chile, después de la gran agresión al jugador hondureño.
La FIFA lo vio, todo el mundo lo vio, y no hubo castigo.
