OK maybe saying that it's the "status quo" was a bit harsh. But it's certainly not uncommon.

Quality stuff from Algeria so far.

They looked pretty decent too against Slovenia a few days ago, but just like that match, I expect them to blow it in the second half.

Who knows, maybe they can avoid the hiccup. Maybe they can Swiss 'em. Ball is round, PF :D

Sure, I think waiting on the other shoe to drop is natural. I am waiting on it, too. However, if they lose today they're out. Hopefully they continue to play like it.

So what exactly do we want from England and Algeria?
IMHO a scoreless draw would be great. A 1-0 England victory would also work.
Anything else would be really bad for us.
Algeria looks like a better side than Slovenia.

The headlines from the WC will confund future generations:

    US beats England 1-1
    US ties Slovenia 3-2

Disagree. In fact, it almost doesn't matter.

    If England Wins:

    England - 4
    Slovenia - 4
    USA - 2
    Algeria - 0

No matter what happens between England and Slovenia, a 2 goal win by us guarantees advancement (and possibly winning the group, if England only wins by one today and draws Slovenia). A tie does us no good.

    If Algeria Wins:

    Slovenia - 4
    Algeria - 3
    USA - 2
    England - 1

If we beat Algeria by any score, we advance. England is guaranteed to finish behind us, and so is Algeria. If England wins, we win the group.

    If it's a draw:

    Slovenia - 4
    USA - 2
    England - 2
    Algeria - 1

Now things get interesting - if Slovenia beats England on the third matchday, then a draw would be enough to see us thru. Otherwise, as long as we win we advance, and we win the group if we win by more than England win, or if we win by 2 and Slovenia draws England.

So, it would seem to me that a 0-0 draw is best. Next best is Algeria winning, because then a simple win by us over Algeria guarantees advancement. Last is England winning, because then we need to win by 2 goals, or hope that England-Slovenia doesn't end in a draw.

Bottom line - win by 2, and we're thru. It looks rough being on 2 points, but we could be a lot worse off.

Is England as bad as the radio announcers are making them out to be?

Carragher will be out v. Slovenia.

but if England wins this then Algeria has nothing to play for next week, which would hopefully mean an easier time for us.

I know. This guy is clearly English, clearly biased, and clearly and thoroughly disappointed with the way his team is playing. It is like if I was calling the first half of the US game today.

    Shep Messing sounds old.

They are playing very tight and nervous. When you are playing that way you can't play well.

Based on what I am hearing on the radio, if Algeria gets out of this with a draw (or a win), I don't WANT to play them next week.

Thank you for posting the mumble jumble that has been in my head since the game this morning. Win by 2 and we are good.

Hell good point. Sure as sh*t would be a lot easier if we didn't get hosed today by the ref.

Alright I'll go ahead and say it, I believe that there is an international conspiracy to keep the USA down in soccer. Coulibaly is just the most recent example of questionable bad calls to go against us on the biggest stage of all.
For example, 2002 v Germany blatant hand ball from them denies us an equalizer in a match many will say we controlled.
2006 highly dubious red card on Pablo mastroeni against italy denies us a 10 man advantage.
2006 PK call against Gooch in the Ghana game that was a horrid call.
2010 Today the winning goal waved off due to who knows what.

Anyone else with me on this?

    0-0 FT.

Best possible result for the USA. It's back in our hands now.
