What was Scott McDonald going to do about our ageing central defense?

Well done to Germany - you totally destroyed our defence. Yeah sure, our ageing defence was woeful, but credit to Germany for some beautifully fluid passing and great goals. I had them at #2 for this WC and haven't changed my opinion.

I could have salvaged some good from the game because contrary to expectations, Australia actually made some nice moves forward and created some chances. I was scared that Australia would play all 3 games in their own penalty area, but that wasn't the case here.

But Cahill's red has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

Having said that, Australia were creative enough up front to give me some hope for the Serbia and Ghana games.

16 goals scored in their last three opening games at the WC... lol at people who say that Germany are slow starters....

So I guess then that Nigeria would be Team Shell Corp/ITT/BP/anyone else who wants to rape our resources/graft and corruption in govt. ******** that, we won't even have a team we'll just sell off our players to other countries for a hefty price.

I give Germany these odds for 2010

    quarterfinals - 90%
    semifinals - 65%
    finals - 30%
    winning it all - 10%

Every tournament, same thing always happens, a team plays their opening match well and people start making a stink. Argentina in '06, Netherlands in Euro '08.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Long way to go folks. We'll see if Germany is the real deal. Way to early to tell.

Sadly while it's a harsh assessment of Australia I don't think it's unreasonable based on what was seen today from all 4 teams. I certainly hope they make a better account of themselves though.

Germany was on fire - looked tight throughout, in my opinion. Much deserved win.

What should come first? A want to live in a country? Or a want to be on a national team?

Some of these players if they knew for certain they will not make the squad would probably not go through the steps involved.

So I think the whole charade with nationality should just be extinguished and national teams should be allowed to field the best they can attract. In some ways this is happening already under the guise of citizenship.

No, that's Italy. They grow as the tournament advances.

Germany is a bit the opposite.

Well it's a shame you can't have the real big guns in the same groups, but australia is a team with serious hopes of making the next round, so this was definiteley a step or two up from saudi arabia or costa rica.

You should try to sell players to China. They're just looking to get started in football now.

This is very true. And let's also keep in mind who they were playing. I'd say that of the top contenders, they had the softest opponent.

bit of Karma for Cahill who should have gotten a straight red against NZ in a pre wc friendly

he got away with murder in that instance(as did Grella), not so much this time

and the aussie coach even said they wouldnt get away with that in a wc, guess he didnt pay attention

Taken some pressure off your defence by holding onto the ball further forward.

That pretty much defeats the spirit of the World Cup. Might as well stick to club football if that's what you want.

Oh by then we'll have probably sold the entire country to them so it won't matter.

at least wait to see how "bad" australia are by how they finish the group against serbia and ghana. Same goes for the big teams and their opponents. the only fair way ;)

Actually, you're kind of wrong there... back in '98, the rules were bent almost to the breaking point for Paulo Rink. He has a German great grandfather, I believe, but I bet that he'd never have gotten a German passport if he was no pro player ;)

But what ninja doesnt appear to believe: Özil was born in Germany, Marins family left Bosnia because of the war when he was 4 years old, Podolski and Klose are 2 of nearly 2 mio so called "Aussiedler" from Poland, people in Eastern Europe with German descent that moved to Germany. Everyone of them is a pretty typical immigrant. What is true is that there's an unusual ammount of players with foreign or mixed decent in the nt. However I blame that on the conditions of living - rich, fat German middle class kids like me don't develope the drive and dedication that's needed to become a pro player as often as kids from a less well-off background. We can see the same in France ;)
