So I'm a European who loves N.American football, I loved the way that over lunch or pint my friends and I would discuss the USL situation and then when It finally came along the NASL, I loved watching and waiting for Vancouver, Portland and now (finally not sure if its a good thing yet though) Montreal joining MLS, Ive loved watching the Sounders,TFC and Philly do well from the start, Its much better than the current euro leagues in that respect, and so im definitley not what alot of users think, which is a eurosnob. So my question is, is it justifyable to support Montreal Impact just because I have relatives that live in Montreal? If it where on quality of football i would go for Sounders,Galaxy or DC. why do you support your team? locality? quality or what?
Quality? LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew, Real Salt Lake Honestly, the Canadian teams and Seattle are all playing like garbage.
Sure, support Montreal. Hell, even if you didn't have relatives there I'd say go for it. They have a decent fanbase already and they will have a big rivalry with Toronto. Galaxy don't need any more fans. Neither do Seattle. DCU might not even exist in the future.... Go with Montreal. I know your post June 14 but we had the WC break and not much has really changed. I agree with you that Seattle is playing like garbage. As we speak they're losing to LA and will be 4-8-3. However, I'm not sure why you'd say the Canadian teams are playing badly.... First of all, Vancouver is the 2nd best team in the NASL out of 12 teams. How that is garbage, only god knows. Toronto isn't playing that badly. Atleast not enough to label them garbage. They've been 3rd in the East most of the season and are in the playoffs. I would say teams like Philadelphia, DC United, New England, Chivas, & Kansas City are playing like garbage.
Nice to know you're watching the league. Since you don't have a local just watch games and support the team you like watching the most, it'll never be the same as having a hometown team but don't let other people pick for you.
Well, in MLS, quality (or the lack of it) is temporary, so I'm not sure I'd pick based on it. Relatives in the city is as good a reason as any.
I find the idea of becoming the follower of a team, because they are one of the best, an odd choice. I know its done a ll the time, just seems 'too easy' or lacking in any real passion for the game. Nothing personal, but I find old time fans of teams like Man City to be much more genuinely passionate about their team and sport. Otherwise you come across as a bandwagoner. I can perhaps say the same thing about my following the LA Clippers in the NBA (since 1987 or so) Im glad theyve got lots of new fans since acquiring Chris Paul, but theyll never truly relish success like a fan thats been through hell.......over and over. I truly appreciate your passion for the American game. I just feel its better to pick a team to follow based either on geography, style of play, or for a favorite player. Hell, even choose one for the colors they wear. But make it personal
