Just for support purposes as far as I know. I'm behind the idea, but I don't think at this point it's realistic for Indy to be considered a good market. I can't imagine anyone really dying to invest in a team. And I love the city, but this has to be one of the most fair-weather sports towns I've ever seen.
do we really have anything to go against except the colts and Pacers?? Pacers had a STRONG following until Miller retired and the team turned thuggish. Starting to rebrand itself. I dont think we can use the Ice nor the Indians as examples as they arent pro teams
anyhow, its more likely we'll find an owner willing to shell money out for NASL before we see the type investment for MLS.
The Indians aren't a pro team? As for more likely to find an NASL owner...trust me, you had people looking long and hard at the D3 level and were justthisclose to pulling the trigger, but the numbers simply didn't work. I wish y'all well, just wouldn't advise you to hold your breath.
The Indianapolis Indians arent. The Indiana Ice ticket manager told me a rumor was swirling that Indiana was going to get a PDL team. Id much rather have a D2 or D3 team, but id throw my support in for a PDL team. Wouldnt draw great, but it would be live soccer in a city that could use it

i would classify them as semi-pro. I guess it was pretty poor wording on my part. And i guess if you look at it from a soccer stand point, it certainly is pro, just a lower level. However, most would say they are semi-pro, AAA, minor league etc... people generally think Pro Baseball = MLB Whats your point about the $$??
You can classify them however you like, I suppose. But "Semi-pro" usually means you either get very minimally paid or not at all, but that playing is not your primary job during the season. The Indians - as all affiliated minor league baseball teams are - are part of what used to be called the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. They're not major league. But they're professional. They're a professional team, their players are professionals. And, no, people do not generally think Pro Baseball = MLB. People generally think Major League Baseball = MLB. Most understand that minor league baseball players are still professionals.
Really? I thought pro baseball included the majors, AAA, AA, A and in years gone by Class B, Class C and Class D. There also are some independent minor leagues that are professional. To my mind, Pro Baseball = Baseball played by people who get paid to play.
Correct. That said, the numbers don't work anywhere, and still PDL, NASL, and MLS teams pop up all over this country like mushrooms. A combination of free stadium (a la Seattle or NE), with a competent, deep-pocketed owner (not a la St. Louis) would be needed. Having said that, I (and probably most soccer-less medium markets) would be very satisfied with a Charleston Battery-like situation. Are they running that team at a loss? Can that model really NOT be replicated in Indianapolis?
the Battery have had years in the red and from what I have been told years where they break even. The team is closing in on its 20 anniversary year (Est. 1993) so it must be doing something right!
