    ESPN’s comprehensive coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup (June 11-July 11) from South Africa will include all 64 matches televised live and in high definition on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, as well as extensive coverage on ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV. ESPN Radio will also broadcast all 64 matches. Today, ESPN FIFA World Cup executive producer Jed Drake announced the ESPN commentator assignments for the first 10 days of the tournament (through each team’s first two matches of pool play). Highlights:

    * Legendary play-by-play commentator Martin Tyler, who has called every FIFA World Cup tournament since 1978, will pair with former Nigerian National Team player Efan Ekoku on the opening match – South Africa vs. Mexico – from Johannesburg Friday, June 11 at 9:30 a.m. ET (ESPN);
    * Tyler and former United States National Team captain John Harkes will call the England vs. U.S. match from Rustenburg Saturday, June 12 at 1:30 p.m. (ABC), one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament;
    * Harkes will serve as match analyst on all U.S. team matches, paired with different play-by-play commentators;
    * Tyler and former Scottish National Team player Ally McCoist will call Germany vs. Australia Sunday, June 13 at 2 p.m. (ABC) from Durban;
    * Ian Darke and Ekoku will call the first match for defending FIFA World Cup champion Italy vs. Paraguay Monday, June 14 at 2 p.m. (ESPN) from Cape Town;
    * Darke and Ekoku will call Ivory Coast vs. Portugal from Group G Tuesday, June 15 at 9:30 a.m. (ESPN);
    * Tyler and Ekoku will call Brazil vs. Ivory Coast, also from the “Group of Death,” Sunday, June 20, at 2 p.m. (ABC);
    * On ESPN Radio, the lead broadcast team of JP Dellacamera and Tommy Smyth will call the South Africa vs. Mexico opener, as well as all U.S. team matches, including the England match June 12;

    “ESPN’s World Cup commentator assignments will give fans the very best and most knowledgeable voices for the specific matchups in this year’s tournament,” said Drake. "We will use different pairings throughout pool play to better inform and entertain fans and to give us greater flexibility in South Africa.”

    ESPN’s 2010 FIFA World Cup match commentators include: play-by-play voices -- Darke, Adrian Healey, Derek Rae and Tyler; and analysts – Ekoku, Harkes, McCoist and Robbie Mustoe. ESPN Radio’s commentator teams include: Dellacamera and Smyth; Glenn Davis and Kyle Martino; and Ross Dyer and Shep Messing. Assignments for the conclusion of pool play and for the knockout round will be announced as the tournament progresses.

    Going by the Press release ESPN 3D telecast are going to use same commentators as the 2D version when Newsorp (Sky Sports UK and Fox Sports Australia) have done 3D telecast they have always used a 2nd sets of commentators for the 3D telecast

    There is no way that Derek Rae should be on the 4th team he is easily the 2nd best announcer on the whole staff.He better getter better games in the tournament shame on ESPN for selling him out for Ian Darke, hes been a faithful servant to them.

    Good lineup. Tyler, Darke, Healey, and Rae are all excellent commentators.

    Show me 4 American commentators that are better than these guys. If you answer "Bretos, JP, Schoen, and Wheelock" then you're delusional.

    The Brits have watched all kinds of football way longer than everyone I mentioned in the US quip except maybe JP. American announcers talk way too much when just a few comments and crowd noise would do.

    i dont care that much for harkes but JP isnt that bad, just because he doesn't have a british accent doesnt mean hes awful. he may not be better than the 4 commentators there but hes still good in his own right no need to bash him cause hes not going to south africa.

    I don't have much of a problem with him or Phil Schoen (who has gotten much better recently). It's usually the color guys who try and distract everyone from the game with their antics.

    The only time I think Ray would ever work for me, is in some Brazilian league game where you can see nobody cares about the result and that you need something, anything, to get your blood going. But for big games like Real-Barcelona, it just looks like amateur hour or that Sky Sports fanzone or whatever on FSC.

    The key for me is for the announcers to not be irritating. They don't have to be great, but they can't be bad. I kind of fade out the announcers; I don't turn the volume down, I just sort of half-ignore what they say. But when that are painful (e.g, O'Brien & Balboa in 2006) I just can't ignore them. Although Harkes isn't great, to me he isn't bad either. He doesn't bother me.

    I would love to have someone better for analysis, but compared to 2006 we are in much better shape. Argh, the horror of Marcelo "Lookit" Balboa.

    Among domestic voices, Phil has always been one of our best. He simply had the terrible misfortune to be stuck with Ty Keogh during his ESPN days (and perhaps made the mistake of trying to "fit" with that dullard rather than do his best to ignore him).

    Is it just me or is Shep Messing announcing style the stereotype of what an American soccer commentator would sound like when lampooned by the English press?

    I agree, very impressed with him.

    Frankly, I'm accent-agnostic but do care about how articulate and interesting the announcers are (as we all do, ultimately). For me, Ian Darke is the star of this Finals. I mean, how many times have you heard a play-by-play announcer use the term "obdurate" to describe a team (it was something like "obdurate Nigerians")? Classic.

    Tyler's OK but there's a bit too much general commentary and not enough game action. I never appreciated Derek Rae when he was doing MLS but do now. Tyler comes in a close third, again IMHO.

    JP is an American-type announcer. He's fine. But part of the problem is that we hear that style all the time in the other sports so we get tired of it. British attitude is a refreshing change. Who knows, maybe the Brits would get a kick out of JP?

    Shep Messing has been commentating for ESPN International for a couple of years now, I can not stand him and don't know why ESPN would put him out to a international audience if he was commentating strictly on MLS games I could understand but when he appears on there Serie A and Spanish league coverage it makes me cringe

    I generally don't mind JP Dellacamera, apart from the odd MLS game we get down here he also called a couple of La Liga matches where ESPN partnered him up with Tommy Smyth I would not call him a great commentator but he is decent and a bit of a change. Joe Tollenson and Steve Cangialosi are other commentators I would put into the same category not that ESPN use them often but they are a nice change to the typical English style commentators you get on the others channel

    Agreed! I can't remember the specific words he used at the moment, but as I've been watching the games he's called I've had thoughts to effect of "I like that usage of that word there!" I may be a nerd, but do I enjoy quality articulation.

    Plus, without patronizing, I've liked how he's intermittently been using references from time-to-time that connect with an American audience.

    I'd like to add that I really admire JP Dellacamera and his love for the game. I watched the first half on TV and listened to the 2nd half on the radio because of work. The Michael Bradley goal call was simple and "direct" but you could really tell how much passion JP has for the US team. I'm glad he didn't overdo it like other announcers might have.

    Are you guys on Oz getting the ESPN feed? I think I heard Martin Tyler make some reference to 'SBS' during the Eng-Alg game

    So far SBS has taken 2 ESPN feeds both of those games have involved England with Martin Tyler as the main commentator, the other games they are taking mainly the world feed or with the Australian games they have there own David Bashire and Kevin Muscat.

    SBS interviewed Martin Tyler in the stands before England vs USA game, and he was on the World Cup Show for an hour last night on SBS2.
