Right now the Revs are without their best two players in Joseph and Twellman. When the transfer window open they need to do something. I would try and go after the following: Ronaldinho, Raul, Del Piero, Henry, Robbie Keane, Michael Ballack, Riquelme.
All joking aside, the Revs IMO haven't made the move to put them over the top. All other clubs are looking to improve and it feels like we are always the ones standing pat. I'm not saying go after a Messi, C. Ronaldo or Rooney which isn't going to happen. There are guys over in Europe or even South America that could come here and help this team. We have two DP spots and are not using any of them. Heck if not for anything else it'll help fill the stands with a marquee player while the club searches for their own stadium.
Well, I suspect almost all of us agree with you. It's just that, after a half decade of waiting for these moves, we're down to tears and laughter...mostly tears
Glad you say "almost all" Right now I think we have two DP level players---Twellman and Joseph I also think when/if the roster is healthy it will be able to handle any team in MLS and win hardware. Our problem is not who we have signed. Our problem is that some of the key players we've signed are not available to play
I am too, but that's the reality. And, it's not "when", but "if". It's been a tough situation for Twellman, the team and the fans. If it were an ACL or something, he'd have long since been back. This is just really, really bad fortune. But, I think he will come around this spring/summer - just my blind optimism I guess. The Revs did make improvements. But, it's misleading to say that all other clubs are looking to improve, but we aren't. Rosters are pretty much set now and there aren't going to be major transactions by anyone until the midsummer. For all anyone knows, the Revs are looking at that window in the same way everyone else is. I don't know whether or not we'll sign a DP, but I don't think anything is going to happen before midsummer - after the other leagues finish up, we're past WC10 and, in some cases, when the MLS transfer window re-opens.
Watching some of the LA highlights, I realize now that if LA were in same injury situation as us, they would also be down and out. TnT = Buddle Joseph = Donovan Reis = Ricketts of course they also have Becks out, but then again, when did he actually help the on field performance. I don't think he ever played a full season healthy, and when he was on the field, he would just wait for a free kick. If our three star players were to magically come back to life (wait what...they aren't dead?) then I believe we do have a championship team. The end of this season could be very interesting...
I was very tempted to create a new screen name so you might take this post seriously instead of the automatic reflex that is about to happen (already happening on my part)? Overall, I just don't see how you can say we improved. Perovic is exciting but hard to judge him as better than Ralston. There is an age advantage. Shilawski + Dube: how is this better than Dube and Mansally? Shilawski is a poacher but Mansally could run balls down and (sometimes) dribble and pass afterward. Is Jankauskus an improvement over Jakauskus? He hasn't hardly played. Is Phelan better than Jeff L? Is Nyassi better than Nyassi (I'll grant a little better on D)? Sinovic over Heaps or even Tierney? Nope, I don't see it and I wasn't/am not a fan of Heaps/Tierney. I guess we're down to Gibbs and Burpo. Not too exciting to me but I'd grant an improvement at backup keeper if we had a starting keeper. Summing all the downgrades, washes and few improvements, I think "stand pat," is a fair assessment.
I think there are a lot of observers that would say Perovic, Sinovic and Shilawski are improvements. The CRapids trade was a wash.
Ralston played defense, so far Perovic has not After the last two games I am having my doubts about Sinovic. He can not handle speed Schilawaski has four goals, and looked composed on all 4. After two wins I was starting to jump on the koolaide train and believe but then Shalrie is gone and the team is exposed for what it is, a group of Mediocre MLS talent held together by perhaps the best player in the league
Thee is nothing wrong with role players - every team has them. A team without stars, however, is a USL team. As of now, Gibbs and Alston are the closest thing we have to stars.
One of those stars we knew was not going to be available for a good chunk of time, or at least should have figured that out. Inside of signing a forward we went with the tried-and-true low-cost college route. Now while Killer had a good game against a terrible team, I'm not ready to anoint him the next Joe-Max or Taylor, you know? I'm getting really tired of "once the team is healthy." I think if I typed "Revs" and "healthy" into the search function I'd melt down my laptop. Oh, and honestly- KHANO was the best player we could find at that position? Really?
Yes. But what position are you thinking of? He's playing Distract the Angry Mob Lightning Rod Stopper -- we haven't had a good one since Wells left -- and doing damn fine job of it, IMHO.
Pull out 3 of any teams best players and see if they aren't mediocre. Pull out (rather unexpectedly) a league MVP candidate from some other team and see how they do. Yes, without Shalrie, we are mediocre at best. Get him back in here and then we'll see how good we are. Get Reis back in the next month or so and we'll see how much of a difference he can make. Hopefully, get that "other guy" back too. Yeah, we are all sick of hearing about injuries - but, the fact is that we have been rebuilding the team, replacing a lot of the older, more injury-prone players with younger guys. We are younger, faster and more durable. We've replaced some players who were at or past peak with players who haven't reached their potential yet. So, if we aren't better now, we are at least positioned to get better.
