That was amazing. Im so sad to not have Johnny as GM. He sounds like someone with a lot of passion in this video and i miss it.
During the Pele portion a 10 year old with a red Puma sweatsuit walks by. That would be me, taught by the grat Pele!
Makes my Johnny/Pele pic on the wall that much more cool. Thanks CP! Also, nice to hear JM saying on camera what he's said elsewhere - [a certain team's FO] aren't thinking big enough, and are getting passed up by other teams because of it. Bravo, sir.
My perfect world Quakes org: -Alioto running front office -Moore as GM -Dom coaching -Doyle running academy -Chris Sullivan in charge of scouting -Dayak assist coach -Ray Hudson announcing with Schrader
My wife just asked me why I was smiling so big teary eyed. She thought I was watching some touching human interest story about kids (I get teary eyed every time). Nope, this was about my childhood! She has no understanding but patted me on the back and asked me what time the Quakes kickoff tonight...so she can go to bed and tune out my yelling at the TV! Go Quakes!! (And a huge thank you to those who posted the link and produced the video. Just chills, man. Fantastic!)
I really enjoyed that piece, especially all of the old footage - JM dribbling through construction sites - classic stuff. Regarding JM's comments about the current team, I think he's probably right, but if I were the Quakes players, I would use that as motivation, 'cause he's basically saying that they are not good enough. (And I thought that before tonight's match as well, so this is not purely a knee-jerk sort of comment).
FYI, JM was at the game this evening. Saw him when the teams were coming out for warmups. It was really nice to see him. I'm not going to get involved in the JD vs JM stuff, but will only say that JM is a classy guy.
I remember him coming to my HS to watch his son train indoors during the winter and I got to talk to him. He was a good player in those days. Looking at the clip he looked to be man of that match.
I think we should stay positive and not mess with his livelyhood. We do not get to see everything that goes on behind the scenes. JD is an Earthqukes HOFer and should be treated like one, just as Johnny Moore should be.
Thanks to Johnny Moore and Local Soccer Scene, all this old NASL video footage and much more is being preserved within the Soccer Legacy Collection at History San Jose (HSJ), the city's history museum, as part of a collaboration between HSJ, Soccer Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Jose Earthquakes. Thanks to the current club, the museum also has an encyclopedic collection of video from the MLS Quakes/Clash. Imagine being able to press a button to one of several display cases in the new stadium and being able to watch such footage on a large flat screen panel amidst old jerseys, ticket stubs, programs and photos. Casual stadium gawkers will marvel at the history here and long time fans will be able to relive old glories every time they enter the stadium.
It was fun to see that promo again, although that was Paul Child dribbling the ball, not Johnny Moore, through one of the early urban renewal projects in downtown San Jose (they were still dreaming of a major hotel at that time...the St. Claire was pretty much a flop house then). It was also great to see footage of the exhibition game against the Cosmos that happened after the end of the '75 season. There is a longer video that shows footage from '76 (also on Facebook). Highlights of games with Seattle, LA, Dallas, and NY are there. The infamous Cosmos game, when people were sitting virtually everywhere in Spartan Stadium is fun to see again. The bad news for some of us is that the DVD of last year's reunion weekend is not going to happen. I just read that on Facebook. Apparently, the two guys who were producing it have decided to halt production. I don't know why.
If I'm not mistaken, if memory serves me right, the scene with Paul Child dribbling the ball through the debris field was actually filmed in LA, on the set of the movie "EARTHQUAKE". I seem to recall Dick Berg making a pretty big splash over this promo and the tie in to the movie. Dick Berg was a genius at marketing and was able to fill a 17k stadium every match for several years running despite the fact not many people knew about Soccer or even understood the rules. Berg, got the business community and just about every civic organization in the valley behind the team and made the matches such great events with Krazy George, the half time entertainment , etc. That going to a Quakes match was a real event. I have no doubt that if Dick Berg or an equivalent marketing mind was operating the Quakes we could once again easily put 20k butts in the seats at every match. What stood out for me in this particular film was not the great memories, though they were refreshed and enjoyed, it was Johnny Moore's statement that the San Jose fans are an educated fan base and deserve more than is presently being delivered. His comment about Seattle and how they approached coming into the league compared to San Jose, just reinforces the fact that the wrong men are currently running the show in San Jose.
The gimmicks were a lot of fun and certainly did wonders for the atmosphere at Quakes (Nasl) games but I think there was more to it than that...I mean that helped initially but there were so many different nationalities and skills on one team, that any novice fan had to appreciate. You had the Brits, the Yugos, a few tough Americans in Buzz and Mark Demling and also Simoes and the rest. I mean I love the fact that we now have all the young and experienced Americans today as opposed to what we had back then, but still the contrasting styles and personalities those foreigners brought to the pitch, haven't really been replicated. When teams came into Spartan Stadium in those days, they were in for a battle and it worked as the Quakes at home were tough to beat. Davie Kemp for example marked Pele out of the game. I remember him losing the ball more often than not. Johnny Moore commanded the midfield and John Rowlands a converted forward was a threat upfront as well as the back and Ilija Mitic along with Mark Liveric were joys to watch....Also, Mike Hewitt was one heck of a GK. Even though the game has changed and evolved, I don't know if we will see those days again any time soon. There is always hope, however.
I had always thought that scene was filmed in San Jose, but to be honest, no one ever told me where they did it, so your version seems more likely, especially with the "Earthquake" movie poster being included in the video. Regardless, I always thought it was a clever thing to do. Johnny's comments are, as usual, right on the money. Too bad the current ownership doesn't seem to be interested.
They're more interested than the big group of zero other ownership groups that stepped up to prevent the move or revive the team post-move.
