From a report in France Football, Robert Pires connected to the Union?

    http://www.mls-daily.com/2010/04/vieira-pires-giuly-to-follow-henry-to.html

English Translation of the original article:

    Hmmm, post-World Cup DP acquisition?

I love Bobby, but NO. I don't think he'' hold up well in the league, especially with the physicality of the play. I would take Guily, Vieira, or Henry though.

I don't know Pires, but I wonder how much more physical MLS really is and if you can't still succeed as a finesse player. I mean, Blanco and Schelotto aren't very physical and both had a lot of success.

nobody thought landon was physical enough to play in the epl but he made up for it with speed. of course landon isn't afraid to literally break you ankle so maybe that needs to be added to the criteria

Okay, I'm going to say this in spite of my love for Bobby. He makes Greg Louganis look like an amateur. Getting bumped around so much will cause him to flop and us to moan and groan worse than when Freddie did it 2 weeks ago. Also, he's not as stout as Blanco and Schelotto. If he decided to do it all the way I think he could be productive, I'm just not sure I want to see him run around MLS and dive like hell and then walk away in a year.

On another note, does anyone think the delay in signing Arrieta has something to do with MLS's rules on signings/allocations/etc or is it they just don't want to commit?

was just going to post that... its compelling... but would he be worth it? We could use the depth at forward but I don't know that hes the answer...

I wouldn't give up too much for his rights from DCU. Sure, we could use some help in the attack, but Emilio doesn't really create chances on his own and he at times stops putting in effort in a game.

Really, I'd rather see us use a DP slot and the cap space we have to sign a high quality striker or attacking midfielder who would make our current striker be better.

It depends who or what they want in return for him. I wouldn't give up any of our young guns.

A lot of DC fans seem to want Fred back in a hypothetical trade, but I don't think we can afford to lose him from our midfield which lacks depth.

Unless this is referring to the Phils' catcher playing some footie on the side, I don't think I could get behind this signing.

I know we need striker help, but I can't stand Ruiz when the Nats play Guatemala, so I don't want to be forced to root FOR him otherwise.

hmmm. if you guys sign ruiz and pair him with moreno you are going to need to forget putting turf down at PPL and instead plan to put down bubble-wrap or tempurpedic memory foam or big fluffy throw pillows instead. with as much time as they will spend on the ground you'll want to make sure they don't hurt themselves and are comfortable.

I like Christian Arrieta, and he'll definitely add some good experience to that backline. You guys are playing a 3-4-1-2 right?

Happy about the Arrieta signing. His signing addresses three important issues : quality, depth (and quality depth), and experience. Never a fan of El Pescadito. Maybe he can sign with a club in Atlantic City. The headlines can scream about the return of their beloved diving horse.

Former MVP, former cup winner, 80 MLS goals scored. Carlos Ruiz sounds like a solid move to me, sometimes you have to put your personal feelings to the side, this team has very little in the proven goal scorers department.

That Ruiz news isn't just a rumor. Looks like Philly has a discovery claim on him and everything. I wonder if Carlos has a green card from playing in the US for so long (just to keep those int'l slots open).

I think Union can risk a Ruiz try. He was very good at Dallas, not so good in LA or TFC. Although of all my non-fav ex-MLers, I would have liked to go after Amado Guevarra first but maybe he was busy.

Prinzess Poldi!? nonononononononono a million times no! I had to sit through 3 seasons of him playing like horseshit at Bayern, and I don't want to live through 3+ more in philly!

actually, he'd probably tear shit up in MLS, but his ego is too big, he'd never go for it.

you guys need to sign ruiz quickly. once a striker leaves TFC he is a goal goldmine. Cunningham, Casey, Buddle ... if Ruiz turns out as good as them post TFC you guys could be in the playoffs.

You guys are going to be presently surprised by Arrieta. He is a quality player. One who should have been in MLS last season. Two-time USL defender of the year and reigning USL MVP doesn't necessarily translate to MLS success but I have a great feeling Arrieta will fit in, right off the bat. Strong defender, great with the ball at his feet and is a scoring threat. You can't ask for more. He will obviously need to step up his game but it shouldn't take him long to get up to speed. Sad to see him leave PRI but glad to see he's walking into a good situation.
