First LT and now Westbrook - sad dose of reality for a lot of NFL fans this week. RB's, as usual, falling off a cliff rather than slowly decline.

Why is Howard trying to give Crosby a rear naked choke? You don't disrespect Sid like that.

Any fans of the sweet science here?

What did you make of the Miranda-Bute and Pavlik-Martinez fights this past week?

Also what do you make of the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Sugar Shane Mosley bout?

A fella on another thread just licked to a pretty amazing article. I'm sure you fellas already knew this anyway but, viewed as an outsider, it's pretty staggering...

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704281204575002852055561406.html

Football fans everywhere are preparing to settle in for the NFL's biggest and most electric weekend of the season—a four-game playoff marathon that will swallow up at least 12 hours of broadcast time over two days.

But here's something even dedicated students of the game may not fully appreciate: There's very little actual football in a football game.

According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.

Am I right in thinking these things go on for about 4 hours?

    From memory they do.

One of the greatest things about ESPN360 or ESPN3, is that they show all kinds of sports. Watched Aussie Rules Football a bit. Interesting sport.

RIP Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, the George Best of snooker for those that mightn't have known him (and he was also from Belfast). Maybe more George Best & Bobby Robson rolled into one. :(

Glad you posted this Billy - came on this thread to post something myself.

No doubt that Higgins was a huge star at a time when snooker got better tv ratings than football. It was players like Higgins and Jimmy White (a Chelsea fan gawd bless 'im) that got me playing in the dark/dingy/smokey clubs in the 80's and 90's. More than anyone he could pot any ball in any situation whilst rushing around the table (compared to the slooooooow play of many of his peers).

The game isn't the same anymore in terms of personalities (I personally find Ronnie O'Sullivan to be a cock, not a rogue) and importance in the sporting calendar, but back then it was huge and Higgins was a major reason. A true snooker genius.

I salute anyone who chain smokes and chain drinks on their way to winning titles and a pint of Guinness will be raised in his honour in my house tonight.

NFL games last about 4 hours. However there's a 20 min halftime, timeouts, TV timeouts, etc. It's such a violent sports I can't imagine if the play was longer.

Outsiders love to say that rugby is more violent or just as hard but you have to remember the equipment NFL players wear MAKES it more violent. You see bone crushing hits on nearly every NFL play. You don't see that all the time in rugby because the players aren't in armor. I equate it with the NHL. Putting helmets on players actually harmed safety it's argued because players felt protected and therefore hit harder.

NFL great and Pitt alum Mike Ditka (and I've posted this before) has been arguing against facemasks in the NFL for awhile. He thinks it gives players a false sense of security and leads to more injuries.

I am going off topic now though but 11-15 mins seems about right. Figure there are 4 15min quarters. Each play runs about 5-20 seconds and then afterward you have 40 seconds to run another play or you get penalized.

Watching the Leafs vs Lightning game. Man what an awful first period. Four shots vs 17 and 2 down.

Will the Leafs reach the playoffs ever again...
