Well he has always been such a great diplomat, I think he would do very well in that role. Star players that tend not to do so well in that role have always been the explosive, unstable ones.

Drogba also wrote in his book that he met with Ancelotti and Maldini who almost convinced him to join Milan. And I am sure this wasn't the first time Maldini has had such a meeting, so in some ways he has already played that role before.

Maldini The inquiry comes after intercepting a telephone conversation in January 2009 with Luciano Bressi, an official of the Italian Revenue Agency arrested in Milan last June and explored leading the investigation opened by the Milan judicial authorities.

In that conversation, as regards the prosecution, you can hear how Maldini Bressi asks prosecutor to provide information on Alessandro Paolo Baresi, brother of two Italian players, facing a real estate transaction in which it intends to participate with the Tuscany (central Italy).

Since I posted about his son in the youth sector thread there were certain feelings coming back about Il Capitano.

Also thinking about our current LB situation he could probably still keep up. This picture is already a year old but he looks in better shape than some active footballers i know.

Here is an more recent one with his son and Ibra's girl + their children.

Galliani asked him to come back a year ago but because he hadn't trained since May 2009 he decided to not play......

i thought it was interesting that he said he's been chosen as galliani's successor, but then he never had a followup with barbara and hasn't heard anything since. is that what he actually said? i read an english version on football-italia.

Paolo Maldini compie oggi 46 anni. L'ex capitano rossonero e della nostra nazionale detiene il record di presenze nell' A.C. Milan (902) e del nostro campionato (647). Buon compleanno leggenda!

I wish I could of seen more of his games live, I started watching Milan literally at 2007 and saw only the late stages of his career.

Even at a later age he was still a force in the back. I rarely recall him getting below a 6 player rating. Maybe once in a while but it was very rare. Too bad we don't have players like him anymore. Italy went from Cabrini , Maldini to Grosso and now nada. Pretty sad.....

Maybe is just a generational cycle? Maybe in 5 years we might see the arrival of new talents?

What are Italian kids doing now adays? There was no computer when Maldini was a kid

Yeah I was thinking about that the other day. Still , I'm afraid if too many clubs like Juventus, Inter & Milan, keep employing 9 or 10 foreigners on a yearly basis, it will be tough to find and groom national team players. I'm sure they are out there militating on the bench or in Serie B & C but as long as players from other nations are starting in Serie A, it will be tough to find them.

He was the reason I became a Milan fan when I lived there. That and my cousins gave me no choice, but it was a no brainer when the two teams in question were Milan and Inter ;)

Nein!!! Grosso was a hero at the World Cup in 2006, but he cannot be mentioned in the same sentence as the other two over the course of their careers!

It still amazes me that some people think its the youth academies that are failing, when the talents are coming through, but like you say are not being groomed properly, or rather not being given the time to be groomed at the senior club level. Sure the academies can improve. The real issue is how the players further improve by playing in league competition and hopefully again in Europe. Thankfully, some teams like Torino and recently Sassuolo are doing their part. It really has to become the norm on all teams rather than opting to by cheaper foreigners.

Interestingly, even though he was not at the same level by any means , with that one World Cup, Grosso at least as far as the national team is concerned accomplished the one thing Maldini always wanted. That is to win and be a protagonist on a WC winner. While Paolo was playing in his 3rd consecutive tournament in France in 1998, Grosso was on a 5th division team at Renato Curi as an an attacking midfielder and left winger. That is quite a jump to go from a filth tier club to a WC Champion. Can't think of any Italian player who ever could pull that off and the way things are with the youth teams, it doesn't look like it will happen again anytime soon.

Torino traditionally always had a great youth setup. From what I'm reading in the threads though, its seems to be easier for clubs to just go out and buy a bunch of already seasoned foreigners than to spend tons of money on U20 players who most likley will not be with the club in 3-5 years time. From a business and tactical standpoint, I can see the clubs stance as its probably cheaper in the long run. Sadly that thinking may not help the future of the younger Italian players.

If they squeezed out of this cup, there would be at least two who have more skill that potentially cold have done it, though?

Grosso has a great tournament, but he was only a starter in the first game while Zambrotta was still recovering then hit the bench in the second game until it was evident that Zaccardo wasn't cut out for RB at which point Zambrotta switched over and Grosso was given consideration again. He was also more valued for his runs and crosses going forward and not his defensive prowess. So while winning a trophy is nice, it does in no way...ever...pin this lifetime or the next put him in the same breath as the other two, interesting accomplishment or not.

I believe I've mostly been posting that info. A few years back I read a pretty detailed report on the business of it all and long story short, its cheaper to buy average South Americans than spend money developing talent. Baggio drafted up a solution to this all, and wasn't given the time of day to present it, about 15 minutes for 4 years of work. After that he quit his position citing that they were never serious about improving anything and only hired him for the illusion that they were. I would really love a reform of the federation from top on down, give control to the players that care because its obvious something really stinks in the hierarchy.

Back to the foreigner topic, it's not just the seasoned foreigners but also the young ones too that are cheaper to buy than the same or better quality domestics. Look at Catania full of average South Americans as an example. Teams are opting to cheap out. Mentioning Torino was not just for their youth program (Inters has been pretty good lately too) but because more youth are finding time on their roster these days than many other clubs. Sassuolo doing their part too.
