Actually the lesson learned was that, when they tell you not to travel by bus in a war ridden area that still has old land mines, then don't... and we saw what happened with the "or else" part.

They weren't blown up by land mines, you know. And the people who died probably didn't have much of a choice about the travel arrangements. So I'm not sure why you keep trying to blame the victims here.

Anyway, I watching a La Liga game -- Espanyol vs. Athletic Bilbao maybe? They stopped the game in minute 4 because 2 players bumped head -- brought out the whole emergency response team btw. Then they stopped the game again (whole emergency squad again) because someone got kicked in the ankle No cards given for any of this btw.

Athletic Bilbao. They can;t give cards if two team mates bump heads.

:D This I have to see....the La Liga game has people dropping every 5 minutes. It's starting to look like an emergency room out there.

you know, i think the hair is the secret to his success. at the end of last season he was mixing it up and doing so well.

i say we go after the hair in our next game.

Are you serious Lynne? Im not blaming the victims at all. Im blaming their FA. The point I was trying to make was that they were warned about something happening if they traveled the way they did. And something happened.

2nd half starts in the Espanyol game...34 seconds in and a player is down.
1:42 in and 2 players collide and both are down waving their arms in protest.

    0-0 is the score, btw.

Should've been red for Terry? Really close.

What I have read elsewhere is that this particular game was scheduled out in an unsafe border area rather than in the more settled areas. That the idea was to show how safe the country was by staging games all over it.

I had also read that logistics were such that the team could then choose to travel a short unsafe distance by bus, or travel a long (maybe safer?) distance by bus in the opposite direction to get on a plane and travel back to the unsafe border town for the game. And that they chose the shorter route because they were there to play soccer, after all, not spend days on rickety transports.

Anyway, I'm not an expert by any stretch. I can also see that they would people who'd like to see the Togoese (?) blamed rather than the organizers of the African Cup.

Anne-Marie: Do you know that you just charted us on a course through unprotected waters?
Steve Zissou: Yeah, we're taking the shortcut.
Anne-Marie: But it's outside I.M.U. jurisdiction. There isn't any protection.
Steve Zissou: I know, honey. Look at the map. We go your way, that's about four inches. We go my way, it's an inch and a half. You wanna pay for the extra gas?

That's what it sounds like to me.

    CNN sez:

So the place that the game was scheduled to be played is a area under dispute, not that the path to the game was under dispute, THE AREA THAT THE GAME WAS TO BE PLAYED IN was under dispute.

    Map of where they were...

[IMG] Looks at bit out on the border to me....

I cannot believe how much John Terry gets away with, all of the garbage he does on and off the pitch yet he still gets away with it and WORSE he continues to wear England's armband!!!!!

Makes me sick. This is why I support the Socceroos!!!!! They know what it means to wear the Green and Gold!!!!!!

PS love the new line-up icons

haha.. had to be JT, right?

should he have even still been on the pitch? that yellow quite possibly should have been a red. then again, they don't give red to England's Lion.

I wonder whether that incident will simply be brushed under the carpet as per usual.
