right, you dont need to be roster compliant till much closer to opening day. Larger rosters make complete sense, but they also either need to revive the reserve league or setup a clear mechanism to loan guys out for experience. A striker like Chirgadze isn't going to play much for us, but a full season in the USL/NASL D2 would help him out.

wouldn't chirgadze not take up a roster spot as an academy signing for the 2010 year? rbny can have chirgadze and agudelo as academy signings this year and kassel as a 2011 academy signing, right?

Nope, they would count on the roster where they belong (dev and GA in the dev roster and sneior contract for senior roster)

According to some Austrian media RBNY is interested in signing Alexander Zickler of RB Salzburg.

I don´t know if that is true or just a speculation, there are no specific references given.

    Profile of Zickler:

    Wikipedia:

    [ame="http://www.myvideo.de/watch/7271102"]Alexander Zickler season 2005-06 Video - darmsonde - MyVideo[/ame]

    Search on youtube:

My opinion: Well, he is a 35 years old, experienced striker. Actually with Angel you already have one of this type so I don´t know if Backe wants to "recycle" such veteran performers.
Zickler is good at counterattacks and at headers, very intelligent player. Great personality also as a leader but still 100% teamplayer, he has a fighting spirit and some decent skills on the ball.
I think he has 1-2 years left, then he will resign. All in all Zickler is much more realistic as Henry, especially considering Salzburg signed another striker today and thus a possible replacement for Zickler.

what's the point ? zickler is 35 years old, you mean to tell me they cant find anyone under 30 to bring to nj ?

I just tell you what I have read (please read and understand first two sentences!) and besides that I agree with you.

However Zickler is not "anyone" and "anyone" of similar quality under 30 will certainly not want to be "found and brought to nj".

I'm sure the MLS doesn't want to be seen as the league where the older decent foreign players come to die (and extend their careers for a couple more years than they would otherwise be able to). At the same time, it might help to increase interest and viewers in the U.S.?

NY Post with a nice piece, getting a view from players as they get to know the new leadership. Petke, Angel, Boyens, and Des McAleenan share their perspectives.

    *yawn*

Same old "new guys do things better than the old guys" mantra coming from the locker room. I've seen this Tango way too many times before to be remotely pleased by it

I'll be convinced sometime around March 27th (probably into May to be honest) and not a moment before.

OTOH, Props to BL for reporting on RBNY over in Spain. Continue the good work

Thanks for the scoop, lonelycowboy. Zickler seems like a great player but I don't think it makes sense to spend time, money and effort to integrate him into our lineup if he's only good for a year or two at most. Woly is a similar player imo (if a little less skilled) who knows his role on the team. I think Backe will realize that we Woly is decent once he recovers from injury and keep the strike force as is.

Don't think so, the problem is we have a few trialist on the team and Tchani already has his spot, so I'm thinking we'll see more of the people on the bubble to see if they can earn a spot. Plus we still have 2 more games and then we have the Disney tournament so we should see him soon.

PS. If he is hurt I haven't read anything yet.

I believe they want Tchani and Stammler to form a partnership and since one didnt make the line up neither did the other. Why that is i dont know.

Tying the champions of Russia is no joke. I'm excited for the upcoming season.

FYI, have you seen how intimidating it is to play in the best stadium in Russia? The fans are dedicated!

Well they played the reserves of the CHampions of Russia, so readjust your expectations accordingly.

Also they played in a training ground in Spain not Moscow, in case you weren't aware.

Couldn't agree more. Unless you've just won a championship, the best season you'll ever have is the one that's coming up.

OTOH, this attitude doesn't prove that the new guys don't do things better than the old. We'll just need to wait and see.

And since this was the first game since October for us, as well as adding a few newbies and trialists into the mix, I'll re-readjust my expectations again. :D

Dane Richards injured and Tim Ream has impressed.

Hate injuries hopefully its something minor and he'll be good as new before the season starts. As for Tim Ream I'm rooting for the kid, hope he makes it :)

an interview with Lindpere. It's translated into English.

    http://ow.ly/12Phc

Two years (guaranteed I guess?) with a two year club option.

Most of this interview does not thrill me in the slightest (with the exception that he clearly knows a first team place isn't being handed on a platter to him)

I will don't care a bit, if this Linpere is much better than any local player that we have or any international that we can have if the salary go according to the play they bring to the field every game to the fan... but if he is another Rojas or Piatrielo (I forget his name), them, and only them.....I will tell you in June.... But want thing is for sure, so far is, far so good.... and I start pissing in my pants for the 2010 season games....
