Borussia Dortmund - My club through and through. 1997 was a fantastic year for me. Will be back to Dormund in March for the BMG match!!! Woo-hoo!
Barcelona SC - Lived in Ecuador for over 10 years and followed them there. My 1st experience was at a Libertadores match vs Cerro Porteno. Great atmosphere and stadium.
Chelsea - After being exposed and following the BPL for years, I picked a club other than Manu, Arsenal or Liverpool. The fact that Germany's captain moved there in 2006 helped a lot when I started to watch them a lot closer.

    Others;
Werder Bremen - My dad's hometown (I have lived there as well).
    Munich 1860 - 2nd division club and Bayern's rivals.

The rest of the teams come and go simply based on their play. There have been a few clubs that have been exciting to watch but I would not consider them favs nor would I consider myself a fan. Right now Russian champs Rubin Kazan are a good example of that. Also, Birmingham City because of Ecuador's Christian Benitez.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't understand how anyone can have TEN favorite teams? I mean I can likely see someone having a few teams they root for/follow/support, but ten?!?

It depends on how you define favourite. There are a few clubs I actively support, some I would consider myself to be a casual fan of and some others I would prefer to watch over other options. I only consider the first group to be my favourite teams but others could chose to include all three groups as their 'favourite' teams.

Oh ok. I define "favorite" the same as you do then Teso. In which case I can only really say I have but a few, let alone 5, 6 or 7.

There's a reason my master list starts getting a little weird at four and is totally silly by the end - that may not be how you pick yours down that far (or even match beyond your first pick, and not everyone even favors their local team if they've got ties to somewhere else), but you're going to be kind of arbitrary and probably absurdly so. Hence the point of things like "the foreign team with the funniest name" on there.

That list as applied to me, since that's as close as I can even come to answering the question: 1. Carolina RailHawks 2. the new MN team that has no name yet 3. USA (in international play, of course that's my pick) 4. Chicago Fire (I'm not fond of Euro names and of the other choices that's the one I happen to have settled on in the past five minutes or so) 5. Barcelona 6. a random one of the EPL big four (probably Chelsea or Liverpool just because nobody in America mentions the EPL teams that aren't Arsenal and Man U) 7. Wales (there are others but that's the one I'm most aware of) 8. Spain (or somewhere in Latin America but I'm totally a fickle and arbitrary fan who picks the strongest one, plus I like Spanish history) 9. I don't follow the foreign game enough to choose 10. Mqabba, though it changes whenever I see a new one that makes me chuckle

But that's not a real top ten, or even a real top nine; I don't *have* a real top nine. I've got a top handful. Carolina is my team, and in D2 I do plan to root for MN when they aren't playing Carolina (because I used to live in St. Paul and still miss it somewhat, and I want to see the new team succeed where the Thunder eventually didn't). And I support my home country in international play, of course. But really, I stop there.

I guess I could pick other teams. For instance, if I watch much MLS this year, I'll consider rooting for Chicago just because it's the MLS city I have the most friends in, but I don't have any sane reason. I watch EPL a little; currently I just root for whichever team isn't in the big four (which is generally only one of them if they're broadcasting the game in the States), because pulling for the underdog is fun, but if I were watching more I'd pick a team. In La Liga I like Barcelona because of a strong fondness for the city, but I don't actually watch La Liga. (I tried to get into it earlier this season, as a Barcelona guy, but a league with that little parity just isn't fun if you aren't invested in it like a local.) And so forth.

Top few teams? Yeah, I've got some. A top ten? Let me pull some names out of a hat.

    I''l divide them into tiers:

    1. Barcelona (The only club I am really a supporter of).

    2. Austin Aztex (They've only been in existence for year, but they're my local club, so if I go to see a live professional match, it will be them).

    3. Chacarita Juniors (I wanted to follow the Argentine league and picked them somewhat randomly as the team that would have my routing interest. They also have an interesting history).

4 - 7. Arsenal, Roma, PSG, and Hoffenheim (Teams that I enjoy watching and like to see do well in their leagues).

8 - 10. ManU, Man City, and A.C. Milan (Teams that I enjoy watching).

This is a good system except that there is no team near where I live. I refuse to swathe myself in Philadelphia Union flags until there is clear evidence that they exist. Also all the good teams in my country's top division have stupid names, except "Chicago Fire".

The category of "team with a beloved star from my national team" needs to be included as well.

(hesitant to appear like a Europhile poser)

    1. Bolton Wanderers
    2. Everton
    3. Motherwell
    Sochaux
    Cardiff City
    Lokomotiv Moskva
    Besiktas
    Molde
    Fiorentina
    Arsenal

I have to leave out the idea of ancestral national teams since Wales and Lithuania are going nowhere:D.

Foreign team with the funniest name: It is so hard to pick between all the Albanian teams. Vllaznia Shkodër, Flamurtari Vlorë, Luftëtari Gjirokastër, Bylis Ballsh...

I would say the teams that I enjoy watching are as follows:

    Barcelona - Messi, Xavi, Ibrohimovic
    Man City - Tevez
    AC Milan - Ronaldinho, Seedorf
    Bayern Munich - Ribery, Robben
    Roma - Totti
    Real Madrid - Ronaldo, Kaka

Everton, Fulham & Hull City for the American connections

I would like to say Gladbach because of Michael Bradley but cannot honestly say I have seen much of them... same thing with Ranger and Beasley & Adu.

Sounders were my favorite team in MLS before Union came into existence.

I guess overall, I tend to prefer the best teams in each of the major leagues, but I have always grown up supporting local teams. Since I have never had a local soccer team to support, I basically default to the teams that play the game with some flair. Beyond that, I support my fellow Americans abroad.
