"He also can't get used to the American system of playoffs that MLS uses. Gullit thinks it creates an atmosphere that's not conducive to top soccer, clashing with the rest of the world, where the team that finishes first automatically is the champion."

Rest of the world? Does that not include Mexico and most South American leagues then?

I don't have a lot of patience for Gullit. Hard time getting motivated without press coverage? $6mil doesn't motivate you buddy? Don't like the playoff system? Think it's too easy to get into the playoffs so teams aren't motivated? So you couldn't get the team in playoff position against a bunch of unmotivated teams? Don't like the fact you have to work under the cap, so you have to actually draft well, sign players well, and then coach well to succeed? Sounds like he just doesn't like hard work. Almost like you'd expect for him to be the kind of guy to leave practice early and leave stuff to assistant coaches....oh wait.

OK, that's all I got. Out of sarcasm for today.

Ya that guy was a total failure. I liked the way the team played under him for the first 3 games or so. After that they just stopped trying.

He never was really interested the team, I saw him in San Ho se at a reserve match and he was out side the gate yapping on his cell phone during most of the match; not even watching the match. According to at least one player, he had the same feeling about Rudd.

I just don't understand how anyone could be so unaware of what they are getting themselves into in this day and age.

Edson Buddle played well under him.

ruud gullit was a bad coach before he came to the galaxy, i thought it was a horrible decision when it was announced. he's always got an excuse for his poor performances as a coach, it's never his fault.

having said that he was brought in to a poorly run team, on the back of two disappointing seasons, where the two star players were at odds and the ownership group was so dysfunctional no one had any idea what was going on, or who was in charge. i don't think there's a coach out there, including arena, who could have succeeded that season. as an organization we needed to hit rock bottom the lalas-yallop-gullit era was almost a necessity, the growing pains of the league taking another step in becoming a top league (still a long way off, and there are still going to be major gaffes like the 2006-2008 galaxy, but we're on our way)

He had the team playing some attractive football at times, yes, but that doesn't hide the fact that he didn't give a shit about the team or even performing the job he was paid handsomely to do. The team ended up worse off because of that.

The team was scoring goals like no other team (probably) in MLS history. For a handful of games, it was fun, even if they couldn't keep other teams from scoring.

It's kind of strange, but the entire interview reads like a lame bigsoccer post.

We played some of the most exciting soccer I've ever seen in the MLS with Gullit as coach. I really miss the attacking soccer sometimes.

He's a professional and should have done his homework and understood how the league worked. Seems rather lazy of him not to. The front office should have also played a role in his education. Paying $6 million and not preparing your investment is foolish. What a waste all around.

Yes it was. Now if we could keep him as our offensive coordinator and keep Bruce coaching the defense, then we could have the greatest football team ever... Oh wait, thinking from my American football perspective. Sorry Ruud, my ignorant American mind mistaken the two sports. Oops, my bad.

Now he is going to be sitting with Lalas on ESPN. God I wonder how long that will last.

i'd argue the '98 galaxy team was more exciting, okay maybe not more exciting since we dominated so many teams and gave up so few goals.

At the risk of sounding like a Eurosnob, I only found that exciting to a point. High scoring, end-to-end games are one thing, but when it's your ineptitude that's causing you to ship goals as much as your talent causing scoring at the other end, that quickly goes from "exciting" to "frustrating".

If anything, the constant, undisciplined waves of attack, while producing goals, was actually killing us because our goal was almost perpetual cannon fodder. If I want that kind of "exciting", I can go and watch a 12-7 pickup game.

His three-year contract was said to be worth $6 million, and he said that was so out of line with MLS standards that it created an uncomfortable situation.
"For the amount of money that they normally pay, I don't go from Europe all the way to live here. So therefore they need to find sponsors. But who knows Ruud Gullit in America?Who would pay that amount of money? And the moment that you find out nobody wants to pay that, that's where all the trouble starts," he said.

That is an interesting quote. Reading between the lines it sounds like part of his pay may have been tied to endorsements that never materialized. Why else would the lack of sponsors cause problems for Gullit? I wouldn't be surprised if he had something like a 200k + x from endorsements, but x never came in. Remember one of the first signs that Gullit was leaving was his putting his recently purchased fancy megabuck home back up for sale. Just speculation on my part, but it would fit the actions of a mercenary like Ruud.

General opinion in the UK. about Gullit was, a great player but didnt translate into being a good manager, Chelsea got shot of him despite some success.

50-50. While I don't think it's an excuse for his performance, football isn't covered very much in the mainstream at all, which is a massive juxtaposition to Europe where the media is saturated with it.

I can also see his point about resistance of the game, though only to a point. The likes of Jim Rome and that Cowherd guy do rub you up the wrong way (though I've only seen seen them about three times between them). I don't see Gary Lineker or the Sky Sports pundits lambasting the NFL or NBA. I've also had the occassional colleague 'confront' me over the game - without provocation I might add -and how boring, wussy and crap it is.

Having said that, I've also met plenty of fans (again, some of them colleagues), am able to watch most games and certainly pretty much all highlights, and ESPN and ABC are showing all the World Cup games between them. So it's probably less "resistance" and more "reluctance" and only from very specific, arguably uninfluential quarters.

Back to Gullit - the odd thing about him is that in his prime he was on Ronaldo or Messi in terms of stature and due to his range of passing, vision and reading of the game, was deemed "the thinking mans player". Nowadays he seems very out-of-touch, not just in the USA, but in some of his decisions at Chelsea and Newcastle. I also noticed that at Feyenoord, he seemed to do apallingly. He's have been one of the first players you'd expect to excel in management.

Proving that you never really know what players will translate into good coaches until they have a try at it.

You know, something to keep in mind about the Gullit era was that although it was exciting at the beginning (and it was--no matter how badly it ended) it was also on the back of having our best 3 offensive players have great starts to the year. Beckham, Donovan, and Buddle were all clicking well, and that covered up the fact that the backline couldn't stop anyone. We haven't really seen them all in good form since then, mainly because Buddle has been injured or performing poorly. I think it's easy to forget that Buddle has had a career-long habit of starting strong with a new team, then fading into what appears to be a kind of apathy. Not sure that Gullit can be given all the credit for his fast start.

So while the start was fun, as soon as the offense started spluttering, it was clear that Gullit had no answers for it, and no desire to do the hard work to fix things. For that reason, I'm a little non-inclined to give Gullit the credit for the outpouring of goals from three players who were firing on all cylinders to start the year.

I don't know how true it is, but the assistant manager at Chelsea claimed that during one game he wanted to change to a formation that incuded one defender.
