in this regard, why haven't we added a real goal scoring threat beyond mathis? i've been loosely following the Jon-Paul Pittman thread in yanks abroad, and though he's in League 1 (below the Coca Cola Championship), this kid seems VERY adept at finding the back of the net. he has American roots (born in Oklahoma) and could (and would like to) play for the USMNT, but hasn't really been on the radar. a spell in MLS could increase his visibility for the national team. why would Wycombe let him go? that's a tough one, but i think the most likely scenario is that they are relegated to League 2 and need to offload him. they are in danger of relegation. i can only see this scenario coming into place in a situation in which Everton buys LD outright and we need to add a player who has a real nose for the goal. the timing would be right and the money potentially would be there. if Wycombe stays up or Everton doesn't buy LD, i don't think it's realistic. the downside is that apparently he just picked up an injury. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=935588

I think he should have to work to get back into the starting lineup. We need a guy to push him to become more consistent. Gordon isn't that guy. He seemed to be more motivated when a striker the caliber of Carlos Ruiz was on the roster.
With the Salvadoran invasion in recent weeks why not take a gamble on Rodolfo Zelaya? He's 20, and very skilled. I was impressed with him during WCQ.
Isn't the problem with players under contract to foreign teams the lack of money that MLS will allow to be spent on transfers? My recollection is that its very minimal (under 100K) per player. Consequently teams with talented young players under contract may loan them (as a preview/advertisement) but will not sell them as they can probably get a lot more selling their contracts to teams almost anywhere else. FWIW, my recollection is that this limit prevents an MLS club who sells a player oversees (e.g. the Red Bulls) from using its share of the proceeds for the transfer of another player.
Could be, but MLS has shown a propensity to "bend" the rules in the past. The Ariel Graziani transfer from a decade back was rumored to have been in the millions of dollars. Don't know of anything more current though.
agree as well! i think our tem has a pretty decent nucleus right now, keep the same team but add a quick forward that doesn't just run all over the place like that guy jordan... and we need a decent winger.... a good salvadorean player or any central american or latin american player would be great!
MLS doesn't like its teams spending big transfer fees (back in the early years, larger transfer fees were more common), but they spend when they have a proven commodity, hence the loaning. Its very common to have an agreed fee that the loaning team can pay at any point to acquire the loaned player permanently. A player like Fredy Montero definitely cost a pretty penny (he was the top scorer in the Copa Mustang Clausura before being loaned to MLS, so his transfer easily could top a million), but he proved himself on his loan, and thus MLS was willing to splash the cash. In years past, MLS has shown its willingness to spend transfer fees on established players as well. El Matador cost the league $4m (the largest MLS transfer fee, I believe), and other cases are notable. MLS has become more tight lipped in their transfer fees now, but it doesn't mean they don't spend. I would really love to see MLS's books regarding transfer fees. Would be pretty cool. At any rate, there certainly isn't a "cap" regarding transfers (and it certainly isn't as low as $100k). Regarding outgoing MLS transfers, the team itself gets a super majority of the transfer fee (I don't remember the number exactly), but they only get one full allocation ($500k which can be used for various things, including transfer fees to purchase foreign based players), and the rest has to be used in other areas not pertaining to allocation fees. If you really want to get down to it, MLS teams can spend as much allocation money as they have (as transfer fees), but its not really easy to obtain them, so MLS teams don't really like using it. MLSHQ does police how the allocation money is used with regard to foreign transfers though. They probably wouldn't allow a team to blow $500k in allocation money on an unproven, but talented, 18 year old Costa Rican. Hell, if you really want to look at it in a certain way, we gave up a partial allocation (which amounts to $125k in transfer fees) to get Nate "My Real Name is John" Jaqua, so we paid $125k to get Nate Jaqua. Its likely that the three Brazilians we have on loan have similar "buy out" clause in the loan contract, so that if they perform well on loan, Sao Paulo can't increase the transfer fee. Or, there may not be a clause at all if Sao Paulo simply wanted to send them out to develop more in the hopes that they'll be good enough for the first team in the future. I like how people say "just get a south/central American player", as though the average Latino American player can walk into the side and be the next Cien. For all the Cienfuegos' that MLS has had, its had a hundred Pablo Chinchillas. Its even harder to scout considering that its not common for MLS teams to have full time scouts (though this has been changing in recent years). I really don't know how much I trust our strike force, especially if Donovan gets a European offer (or simply extends his loan). Buddle should be good for maybe 10 next year if he is not used as a target striker, but the rest of our strike force is good for 4 or 5 at best. I think Bruce is pretty happy with our strike force, so I'm not expecting another significant signing. I hope I'm wrong. However, I'm sure Bruce has a contingency plan should Donovan leave permanently.
With Alecko likely done for now, we are going to need someone. I have no idea where you would get a striker worth anything at this time of year. I assume that Alecko will have to be released this week as it stands.
I normally love for YA's to stay in Europe but I wouldn't mind seeing Pittman in MLS. He wants nothing more than to play for the USA and has considered a move to MLS to get on the radar. He is currently Wycombe's top scorer with 9 (6 in league, 3 in cups) goals in all competitions. He has recovered from his injury and will hopefully play tomorrow. He was on the bench last week but didn't get in the game. I believe Waddock only made 1 sub in a 4-1 loss. There were/are rumors that Charlton and Preston North End are interested in him.
