I have been wondering are there any players(Under the age of 20 or name we are not so familiar with us) that may be a part of the national team down the road. Any players that some of you have seen that can be special who is a youngster? Lio and Kun made their names at the U-20 WC but a good majority of us knew about them before hand. I have heard and followed a few youngster such as Pacheco,Icardi,Lamela,Keko,Bruna(Sitll un sure if he will be a part of Argentina or Spain, even though I believe he was a part of a tourney we took part of in France last year) and so. Barca have found a "New Messi":)rolleyes:) in a 12 year old named Gudio Vadala from Rosario, but according to the kids father Juve and Inter also gave them a invite. I am just wondering about our youth and what the future holds because we did not look so great this year.

Yes Bruna played in Toulon. There're still good players that for a reason weren't picked(For example Leonel Galeano was in the U20 age range and never got close), and there's the contrary, players that succeed but later serve no purpose, if you look at the U20 in 2001 which could pretty much be the core today, most of them either got a chance but didn't keep it up some didn't even get it because they were missing in action, but still when they were in the U20 level they won a World Cup.

Hm quite frankly, none of them are remotelly even close...

I dont know, if it's Batista and his associates but the last generation of kids didnt leave a good sensation overall (aside some cases). Most of the 89' - 90' didnt mature very well (notice how many have made the first team in their club?? Not a lot) and let's see what's going on with the 91' - 92' next year but with what i have seen from the last Sub-17, i'm a bit worried for the future... This, combined with the complete failure of the Sub-15 (born in 94'). :(

Franco DiSanto has been a huge dissapointment. He has, almost literally, done nothing since moving to the EPL. Whilst he did not get much playing time at Chelsea, he's not exactly set the world alight at Blackburn either.

Di Santo does seem to be a major flop, do you know at one time AC Milan were debating if they should sign him or Pato? They went with Pato and that was a smart move by their part. The few games that I have seen of Di Santo which was early preseason games, he showed a lot of pace and I mean he maybe one of the fastest players I have seen for that size. Good with the ball and showed a lot of grace. I was really happy with him going to Blackburn, and was hoping for about 12-15 goals and he could grow on that. He has what? 1 or 2 goals? And some of the 2nd team games he played for Cheslea he was quite sensational. But only time will tell about Di Santo, so far not so good.

You know I watched highlights of the game and Zarate was quite instrumental in the game. He was running at defenses and I believe he got 2 assists(I think it was 1 but might of been the player make for 2 out of the 4 goals). That PK, I saw Zarate snatch the ball from the GK's hands and was about to take the PK and his team went and took the ball and slotted it away. Zarate seemed to be quite pist off about it. Now Zarate looks like to be on his way out, and maybe Arsenal??

    Zarate agent claims Arsenal link

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=722093&sec=transfers&cc=5901

"I am still speechless about that," he said. "It is absurd behaviour, Zarate is tired of this situation - having to play all but alone, because all around him he is finding less and less quality. Zarate is not happy."

haha i love mauro. kid has some argentine attitude we lack these days. I have no idea what Ballardini is on about. Losing Zarate would kill any glimpse of light Lazio might have.

The U17 hardly ever did anything better than what they did last year, in 2005 they didn't get over the First Round of the Qualfiers even, with Agüero and co. two years later a similar squad won the World Cup...

And i still insist on the selection, either the clubs aren't willing to collaborate but some missings are questionable, but then again there's an issue with blooming some players blossom later than others.

Also to what i was saying before succesful teams don't mean anything on the long run... For example in the U20WC of 2005 the captain was Matiás Cahais, do you think he's nt material these days? or Cabral, Formica, Maidana, Oberman, Vitti, Barroso, Chaco Torres, Armenteros, Abraham, Archubi? And probably i'm missing others. Hell from Qatar '95 only Sorin got to play on the national team regularly later on, and such has been the case since Japan '79.

Is that really true? The WC 06 team that delighted so many consisted mostly of players who had grown together in the youth NTs. Here's a list of all the "Pekerboys" on that team:

    Franco
    Ustari
    Burdisso
    Coloccini
    Ayala
    Sorin
    Scaloni
    Milito
    Cufre
    Mascherano
    Rodriguez
    Riquelme
    Cambiasso
    Gonzalez
    Aimar
    Crespo
    Saviola
    Messi
    Tevez

Palacio and Cruz hardly played. Only Abbondanzieri and Heinze were key players who had not been part of the youth ranks.

Yes, but i think that was the exception if you look into each generation you won't see much of it, i wouldn't count 2007 and 2009 yet, i gave 2005 as an example of the latest that could be considered, since some from there today are regular but many of them aren't and never will, and they won a World Cup at their age, plus 2005 being coached by Pekerman's right hand following many of his concepts(Assuming that was the most succesful line in that aspect). Here i'll bring the list of 2001 and 2003, to look at the guys that could be the core today.

    Keepers
-Germán Lux - At some point looked like he had bright future, disappeared quickly.
-Wilfredo Caballero - Similar to Lux but his stance was more short-lived.

    Defenders
-Nicolas Burdisso - From this gang probably the one that had the most playtime.
-Julio Arca - Never been on the radar really.
-Mauro Cetto - At some point was on the radar but never got called.
-Fabricio Coloccini - Been regular and there has been a while in which he was missing, i'd say it's uncertain these days.
-Gerardo Seltzer - Never been close to be on the radar, no idea where he is these days. First 2001.

    Midfielders
-Nicolas Medina - He had it with the U23, went on downfall from there.
-Oscar Ahumada - Never really been on the radar.
    -Leandro Romagnoli - Idem Ahumada.
    -Maxi Rodríguez - Idem Burdisso.
-Leonardo Ponzio - Had some playtime but not too much, though he didn't do bad.
-Andrés D'Alessandro - Idem Ponzio, though i think he'll have another chance sooner or later.

    Forwards
-Javier Saviola - Idem D'Alessandro, though he had more play-time and at some point was an undoubted regular.
-Esteban Herrera - Never really been into the consideration.
-Mauro Rosales - Well you know the story...
-Alejandro Dominguez - Never really been considered i think he has better chances now than ever.
    -Sebastian Bueno -

    And 2003.

    Keepers
    -Gustavo Eberto - Passed away...
-Mariano Barbosa - Had his top with Villarreal but even then wasn't on the radar.

    Defenders
-Gonzalo Rodríguez - Had some call ups but years ago, i'd it's unlikely he'll return these days.
-Osmar Ferreyra - Similar to Medina from 2001, though he had a more active role.
-Mauricio Romero - I think he was called up once, and that's it...
-Leandro Fernandez - Had a lot of faith on this one, he never made it.
-Joel Barbosa - Like others, never really been on the plans. Where is he these days?
    -Jonathan Bottinelli - Idem Romero.
-Walter Garcia - Idem Joel Barbosa.

    Midfielders
-Javier Mascherano - Need to say more?
-Pablo Zabaleta - Been called up a couple of times, recently had better consideration may have a better shot in the future.
-Hugo Colace - Never been on the radar.
    -Marcelo Carrusca - Idem Colace.
-Neri Cardozo - At first looked very promising i think he was called up a couple times but long ago, i don't he'll return to his old shape.
-José Sosa - Similar to Zabaleta though he hasn't been called yet.
    -Walter Montillo - Idem Carrusca.

    Forwards
-Fernando Cavenaghi - At some point it looked like he was going to be under a high consideration, not so much these days, he'll have to fight hard for a chance.
-Carlos Tevez - Along Mascherano probably the one that has played the most from this group, a regular call up.
    -Germán Herrera - Idem Montillo.
-Franco Cangele - Similar to Neri Cardozo, though he faded away faster.

Worth noting, some players may not be listed in their correct positions, because at the time they played in other position(ex: Zabaleta as midfielder). Remember in 2001 the U20 won the World Cup, in 2003 finished in 4th place. So as you can see it's always mixed.

If you look between 1997 and 1999 you'll find some more players with active role but you'll find many others that'll make you wonder, "Where the hell is this guy now?"

Not i considered U20's because i think U17's performance have never been notable of anything really. I think at that age the argentine player, in general, hasn't developed yet.

    No that's not exact.

While i remember very well that group ( it was a massive blunder frm them), Aguero (he was supposed to be there but went directly to the WC sub-20 alongside with Messi, Gago, Biglia, Garay, Ustari...) and co. werent there. The most recognizable figures were Buonanotte, Forlin, Papu Gomez and Mauro Formica. I remember well that tournament because that was where we saw for the first time the famous foquinha (Kerlon) and his seal dribble (even though Maradona did it in this time but whatever) Brazil won the tournament and a few months later Mexico won the WC of that category (Giovanni Dos Santos, Carlos Vela). Aside Gomez, none of them made the sub-20 squad in 2007.

I think there is more chance of me winning 40 million on the Euro lottery than there is of Wenger paying that kind of money for Zarate.

Are you sure Agüero wasn't on it? I thought he was, i'll have to look it up, couldn't find the list for that tournament yet. But in a way or another while it looked like 2007 for the U20 it was going to be bad because of the U17 in 2005, it wasn't the case.

    Sure of it.

The only argentina youth team that Aguero made before the sub-20 in 2005, was the sub-16 in 2004, sub-16 that became the sub-15 the year after at CONMEBOL level.

Well people say wonder things about the Zuculini brothers...

Not sure about Keko (the original Enano is still twice better), but Gaitan looks promising.

I recall Agüerto took part in a U15 South American Championship but, if you say so maybe he never took part of the U17, but nevermind if most of the team was different from 2005 to 2007 it comes to show that the pool isn't limited to just some players.

Got to see if there's any spreading by the media, today in FOX Sports, Humberto Grondona complained about the lack of collaboration from the clubs with the youth national teams, and how the year of the U18 was pointless when the clubs didn't allow players to go to Punta Del Este's friendly tournament(not like it really mattered, but...) and that more than once players that still on youth teams once they get called to the youth national teams are listed with the reserves of the first squads so the clubs can forbid them of playing matches with the youth national team.

Sounds like problem knocking the door, but that the clubs were partly responsible for not allowing players was known from the beginning even with the adults.

This was the main reason I wasn't very high on him joining the NT. Althought lately it seemed like he had matured, unfortunately it seems he has not.

I still think Keko is more promising than Buonanotte. Although Dieguito may have more jukes, I think Keko is much, much better at scoring (Buonanotte has never really been good at placing shots unless they're freekicks) and also possesses other characteristics Buonanotte doesn't have. Remember, he's only 17, and he has already shown immense talent.

Read what i said above, the majority of those aren't the "first choice" players, that's what Humberto Grondona was complaining about. They train a whole year and when they get a chance to test anything on a somewhat meaningless match, but a match none the less, the clubs don't allow the players to go, so they have to rely with a bunch of non "first choice" player who had little time to work along.

Surprised that the media, even FOX Sports who was showing this tournament had little to no notice of the matches. Got to see what happens now after Grondona's sayings.

Batista is always complaining how the young players nowadays are poorly trained, how the youth DT are thinking only about winning and not to develop the talent in the canteras... What do you think of it?
Even though i dont like at all Batista, i think he's right here, he's not the only one complaining about that.
