This thread has made me realise just how badass George Vancouver was. I cant wait until the Whitecaps commit cultural genocide to other MLS victims.

Where do I sign up for this fan club? Can I wear a yellow bandana on my head like Hulk Hogan?

You really do a dis-service to his victims when you make fun of this.

Ok you win. Let's forget this whole George Vancouver's crew thing. It was stupid from the start.

Let's start a new supporters club and call ourselves the Redskins, Braves, Indians, Blackhawks or something like that. Instead of a guy in a sailor suit firing a cannon we can have a Chief dancing around with feathers or something. That couldn't possibly be as offensive....

By this logic, I could argue that you really do a dis-service to the thousands and thousands of murdered Iranian civilians by naming yourself "The Iron Sheik" on a message board. The wrestler "Iron Sheik" was once a bodyguard for Shah Mohammad Rezā Shāh Pahlavi and helped protect him and supported his regime even during the heavy repression in the early '70s. During that time the Shah murdered thousands of innocent people to maintain his stranglehold of power in Persia.

Ergo, by glorifying someone who was loosely associated with another person who killed people, you do a dishonor to his victims.

Well not REALLY all that peaceful, there where war parties, slave raids and such between tribes and clans- sure no organized warfare and not as bad as some areas in the world, but there was always a certain level of violence in the PNW.

And to stop your next comment- no I don't think that "they had what was comin' to them by the righteous hand of the British Empire". Yes it was terrible what happened to the Native Americans- a stain that taints our countries forever.

However in defence of the Captain, most of the worst stuff occurred 100 years before Vancouver set foot on the Discovery- ( the first BIG waves of plagues, eco-invasion, cultural disruption and destruction) But in your rush lay it all at the feet of Vancouver, you are painting things only in blank or white- not much better then the old school of history that "savage brutes" were attacking "peaceful settlers". Neither version of history is very accurate or very interesting.

What the Shah was doing was an internal matter of a sovereign nation. It was not invading another land and erasing a culture. I think it is a very different scenario.

Wow. You really are an idiot, aren't you? I take it you are totally cool with what Saddam Hussein did to the Kurds and Shia in Iraq, what the Hutus did to the Tutsis in Rwanda, and what the Serbs did to the Croats and Bosnians in Yugoslavia. After all, they were internal matters of a sovereign state.

What the Europeans did to the indigenous peoples of the Americas was certainly a tragic thing, but when looked at fom the proper historical perspective, it was not a unique event, or even an unexpected event. Blaming Vancouver for what had already been happening for a hundrerd years before his voyage and completed after his death is just asinine. Vancouver's maps certainly sped up the movement of Europeans into the Pacific Northwest, but he wasn't alive for any of this.

    Dude you are getting ridiculous.

I am not condoning what evil men like Saddam or the people in Rawanda did.

I am simply saying that the situation in Iran was an internal matter and VERY DIFFERENT from the outright conquest of another nation.

George Vancouver pillaged the natives while he was doing his "mapping"; and it was his very own maps that helped with the large scale settlement by europeans; and thus the cultural genocide of the first nations people.

And apparently it is far worse to kill people from another nation than it is to kill people within your own borders. Honestly, we should all off ourselves and return this continent to the red man!

Too bad some people get off on still playing the victim today.

The first nations people I see at my work play (and some that I work with) don;t seem to be bothered by how things have turned out.

That is a very racist remark sir.
Kind of goes to my point of intentional cultural genocide.

Have you ever considered getting that giant pole you have planted up your ass removed? It's bound to be somewhat painful.
