Looks like Shanghai Dongya might make it to the CSL - anyone for yet another Shanghai Derby? Just hope it can turn into a proper rivalry before Dongya get relocated to some random city...

as I said in the other thread, though right now the Army side is in 2nd place, if any other the other contenders make it into 2nd place, there should be a derby match next year. It would be really cool if the league went from zero teams in Shenyang to 2, though if that was the case, I'm sure one of the teams would probably move to Anshan or Jinzhou. It would probably be the same case if the Guangzhou team goes up, though I'd expect Shanghai can support 2 teams.

Shanghai is the city best placed to support two teams. Despite Shenhua not having the biggest support compared to the northern teams like Shandong, Shaanxi and Beijing, there is a large latent support for the team. This is evident in city derbies - I remember season 06 (I think) when Shenhua played SHanghai UNited. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure Shanghai United were playing to tiny crowds over in Pudong at Yuanshen stadium of a thousand or less. Shenhua were averaging around 15,000 or so. But for that game, Hongkou suddenly was practically full - fans magically come out for the Shanghai derby even if most were either neutral or Shenhua fans.

The other reason Shanghai has an edge is that there is a rump of "anyone but Shenhua" fans, based around Inter Shanghai's old fan group, who are still around even after Inter moved to Xian. If Dongya get promoted and make a decent fist of being in the CSL, then they could attract Inter's old fans and those who don't like Shenhua. That would be good for the CSL I think and good for SHanghai football.

There's also Pudong Zhongbang in the China League... but i don't know what kind of crowds they are getting, a handful one assumes, it would be good if some kind of Pudong-Puxi rivalry started up, as that would be a good fault line to exploit in Shanghai, but these kinds of rivalries take time to develop and team locations, names, and colours change far too often in China for serious fan culture to develop.

See, I disagree with this, out of all the potential promoted sides, seeing Shanghai go up would probably be the worst. It's true that they're going to pack stadiums for derby matches, but that's about it, I think another team in Shanghai's going to reduce Shenhua's already low fan base. Guangzhou has great attendance and is a huge city, I'm not sure what their China League side gets, but I'm sure they'd do alright.

The absolute best would be the two Shenyang sides going up. LiaoZu has a huge fanbase from around the province and gets good attendance no matter if they're playing in Anshan, Jinzhou, or Shenyang. I'm guessing if Shenyang goes up, LiaoZu moves back to Anshan, so it won't be an inner city derby, but it will be great because the Shenyang side will do well at drawing fans, while LiaoZu will get fans from all over the province, including some who will travel from Shenyang.

Then again, this is a moot point I think, with 4 matches left, its going to be Shanghai or the Army side.

See, I just don't see this happening. Maybe in 50 years, but only if a team from each side of the river stays up (and if the league's still going) and, like you said, if team's keep their identities. Right now, there just isn't the division between the two, as people move fluently between the two sides with no animus between them.

As to which side goes up, I think it all depends on the big matchup between the Army and Shenyang this weekend. If the Army wins it, they have easier remaining matches compared to Shanghai, though if they lose, it could be handing the spot to Shanghai. Great to see drama in both divisions this season.

Cheng, agree about the Puxi-Pudong thing, of course its not going to happen any time soon if at all. However my point about Shanghai being a good city for inter-city rivalry is that it already has at least some history of derbies and there is a lot of anomosity between the lanmo and the rump of former Inter Shanghai fans. We aren't talking about huge numbers here fan-wise, but its at least some emotional baggage to built a rivalry on which I don't think any other city has. I'm saying there is a base and some history to build upon, even although Shenhua crowds are lower than they should be.

Guangzhou - I went down there to visit some mates and watch shenhua play there. Was very impressed with their fans - can't believe that side spent 10 years in jia b. They must have had big crowds during that time also.

I know Shenyang is a city with a footballing history in China - are Ginde ever going to move back?

Good to see Liaoning heading back to the CSL, again a club with a solid history behind them, CSL needs teams like this.

Yep. They are on form, eight goals in their last two games. Lets hope they can establish themselves in the top league and attract back all the old Inter fans who are still floating about. Shanghai derbies are always good!

Not to be. Dongya slipped up in their penultimate game, and didn't manage to win their final game either. Shanghai teams just seem to have a habit of failing at the final hurdle!

Liaoning and Nanchang in the CSL next year.

If it wasn't going to be the two Liaoning sides, I'm happy that it's the Army side we'll see go back up. It would have been nice to have another derby next year, but great that the Army is back, it's been a long time!

    Hi Greenlion,

Can you tell me how many of their foreign players teams were allowed to play in the 2009 League 1 season?
