Not the bomb type, but the smoke machine type. (You can homemake the bomb type, too, but that's a lot more dangerous).

Apparently some supporters' groups are using smoke machines in addition to/instead of smoke bombs. Pro: they're easy to use, cheap, legal in Pennsylvania and don't stink. Cons: you can't create colored smoke.

High-output smoke machines run into the thousands of dollars...but as far as I can tell, they're actually pretty simple. All you need is:

    1) A mixture of glycerol and distilled water to create the actual "smoke" (actually persistent steam),

    2) A pump to push the fluid past a heating element, and

    3) A heating element.

In other words, it's an aquarium pump and an iron. Or on a larger scale, a pump from a decorative fountain, some copper tubng, a large immersion heater, and maybe a small fan.

Any enterprising SoBs think they could put together a backyard version? Anyone think the team would let us install it somewhere in the section and loan us an extension cord?

I wonder if adding dye to the water would do anything?

My wife bought a small fog machine for Halloween, maybe I can do a little dissection on 11/1 and see how it's put together.

It's actually a chemical change so adding dye isn't going to do anything.

Fog machines are too effeminate to be allowed in our section.

Fog Machines : Moped :: Smoke Bombs : Motorcycles

Fog Machines : Easy Listening :: Smoke Bombs : Heavy Metal

I was looking into this actually and there is, as Bolton said, a chemical reaction bomb that can be made pretty easily. The problem is, I burned a finger and a boob just lighting professionally made smoke bombs. I nearly killed myself making chlorine gas in chem. I'm thinking I'm probably not the best person to experiment with the process. However, I would be happy to come and be moral support for anyone who is less clumsy than I and would like to attempt this.

    chemistry is really easy.

for nice thick smoke try this one: brake fluid and granulated pool chlorine.

if you have ammonia based cleaners you can get some good smoke from them as well. :D

btw, if anyone actualyl does this, you are on your own.

3 Parts saltpeter to 2 parts granulated sugar (by weight)
Heat over low heat, like carmelizing sugar, stirring slowly until it is all liquid.
Pour into a mold. Insert a wick, let set.

    Viola, smoke bomb.

Video instructions on how to make it. The amount of smoke this makes is impressive. but a little black cylinder with a wick is a little suspicious looking.

I actually did this before & it works really well (except I was using them for signal smoke on a mountain, not in a crowded stadium)

Well the cheap $10 machines of course are not going to be great but more commerical ones along the lines of low hundreds work well, can color smoked and in the long run would be more economical. Something also to think about confedii machines. Those are pretty cheap can push out more of the stuff and into a large area. That might make more sense.
