I can't remember a more obvious selection in recent memory. He's been far-and-away our best and most consistent player. He's our best player of the decade, century, millenium, whatever timeframe you want to discuss. Congrats to LD.
Not trying to take nothing from LD, but who votes on these things??? How does Jozy get 3rd??? Dempsey is playing way more for his club side. Scored some goals for the USNMT as well. Hell he won the Bronze Ball, awarded to the third best individual in the Confederation's Cup. The last I checked, he starts in the EPL & Jozy is on the sidelines
This award is, and ALWAYS is, about national team play. So if you want to argue about it, we should leave club form out of it.
Ok, Demps had 4 goals, Jozy had 2. Demps was named the Bronze Ball of the Confeds. I am still confused how Altidore finished ahead of Dempsey.
Jozy scored a hat-trick against T&T in April... how does he only have 2 goals by your math? He had 5 goals in the last round of qualifying.
Thanks I forgot about that. So winning a major award in a top tournie doesn't get one any brownie points. In my mind goals vs. Egypt, Spain, Brazil tops the 3 vs TnT. 2 vs. Chelsea doesn't mean anything??? 7 EPL goals doesn't mean anything??? Like I said before, please provide me a better explanation of this voting process. I can't see how anyone votes Altidore above Dempsey, unless they are not following the players.
Don't get caught up in the third place vote. For all you know Dempsey was sut barely behind Altidore. Overall I think I agree with you that Dempsey should be ahead of Altidore, but how much does it matter? Whether Donovan should have won all six of his awards, it is doubtless true that this one is clear and deserved. (I can't totally recollect all the awards of the past decade, but it seems there were one or two at least that might arguably have gone to another player).
I'm sure Dempsey got votes. I'd imagine most ballots had Donovan first..........and then some combination of the other guys after that.
Obviously for 6 years 221 people who follow US soccer day to day thought that Donovan deserved the award. That works for me. Well done, and quite an accomplishment.
http://www.ussoccerdaily.com/2009/10/donovan-wins-honda-player-of-year-award.html Easy choice, Donovan has been great for the NT all year. Congrats, Landon
Once again: the Honda Player of the Year is ONLY regarding National Team play. So yeah, 2 goals vs. Chelsea and 7 goals in the EPL don't mean anything. The award you're looking for is the Athlete of the Year award, which is awarded in December. That takes into consideration both National Team play and Club play. I imagine Clint will do well in the voting for that award.
Thank you for the explanation I was looking for. Again, I never posted that LD didn't deserve the honor. I was only asking how Jozy Altidore get the nod above Clint Dempsey
He's been the King of Concacaf for the US, the most consistent and prolific player in the Region's matches over the past decade. I'm not a member of the Church of Landon; there have certainly been better and more accomplished players to pull on the jersey. But none of those guys have done it longer and more consistently within the Confederation. It's not close when judged by that criteria.
What a selfish prick! I mean come on. What a hog. Two or three POY awards isn't enough? You have 6 damn cars from this award. Six! Share the love. Give a car to those poor MLS kids making peanuts like Holden. Give some hardware to the younger cats on the Nats. They gotta have something to shoot for.
