I Hope The Fans At The Meadowlands Saturday Night Sing "Auld Lang Syne" To 33 Years Of Soccer

    Fans of other sports get to retire old buildings all the time. Rarely do we soccer fans get to do it. The last professional soccer game at Giants Stadium will be played Saturday Night. It's the closing of an era. Giants Stadium was once the undisputed mecca of American soccer. The atmosphere in that building was incredible when the Cosmos played.

    I hope New York soccer fans show up on Saturday night to sing Auld Lang Syne to the old building. Heck, I wouldn't mind giving Giorgio Chinaglia a microphone and letting him sing it in front of a live audience.

    By the way, shouldn't the last soccer game at the Meadowlands be the Game of the Week on ESPN2? Instead, the World Wide Leader In Sports gives us historic Chivas USA. Great idea, guys. And of course, MLS is not interested in celebrating anything about the North American Soccer League.

    Auld Lang Syne History & Lyrics

    Auld Lang Syne (The Good Old Days) is a song traditionally sung at midnight when horns are blown, confetti is thrown, and a general party atmosphere is created to ring in the New Year with happiness and hope for a bright and prosperous year...Robert Burns wrote the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne in the 1700's.

    "Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    and never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot
    and days of auld lang syne?

    For auld lang syne, my dear,
    For auld lang syne,
    We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
    For auld lang syne

    We twa hae run aboot the braes
    And pou'd the gowans fine;
    we've wander'd mony a weary foot
    Sin' auld lang syne

    We two hae paidled i' the burn,
    Frae mornin' sun till dine;
    But seas between us braid hae roar'd
    Sin' auld lang syne

    And here's a hand, my trusty friend,
    And gie's a hand o' thine;
    We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
    For auld lang syne

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    and never brought to mind?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot
    and days of auld lang syne?

    For auld lang syne, my dear,
    For auld lang syne,
    We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
    For auld lang syne"

    And let me also add that I hope fans skip the third and fourth verse.

    The first comissioner Doug Logan was very anti NASL and Don Garber has never heard of the NASL

    With the way the ESC has been treated by security at Giants stadium they will be singing..............but it won't be Auld Lang Syne, expect something a little less cordial, I know because my son is an ESC member and they are gearing up.

    I can't think of one charitable thing to say about that shithole, except that it didn't quite manage to completely kill soccer in the New York area.

    ESC is one of the classic MLS supporters groups. It is a shame what has happened to it because of Giants Stadium security. I hope they make a big showing this weekend.

    wish it was also good ridence to redbull as well...

    I was invited by some one in ESC he was going to give me like 10 free tickets for me and a few pals I was going to go and celebrate the last game ever at giants stadium i was even going to contact old die hards that use to go and ask people to bring out the old flags and any flags that at any point came to Giants stadium...I was going to take smoke bombs. sadly how ever I am totaly disconnected and TURNED off by the energy drink propoganda that is a soccer team 2nd marketing of that awful drink 1st and foremost....I simply have grown to hate this garbage so much that i told this cat to give the tickets to some one blind enough to actually give a damn about this abortion....

    so I wont go to the last game at the dump or even bother going to any game at the new dump.... unlike others who hate every thing that is red bull but continue to shell out money and go and support the marketing because "thats all there is"... I dont connect to this in any way any more and sadly it has zero to do with bad seasons I can support a shit team but i will not support a junk food item dressed up as a team i will not support garbage that only wants to hear and see the name of ther drink on a constant basis....They have turned me off so much I hope they continue to fail at the new place as well................

    I thought your reaction was a little over the top at first but with each passing season under the RB reign I've come closer to feeling the way you have than the opposite. I was gonna buy season tix to RBA but now am out as well.

    Oh yeah Giant Stadium and NJSEA can suck it. No one's shedding a tear for that dump.

    At least there was this man and his time in that Stadium.

    He presented a good vibe for the sport that obviously took root across the nation! Call me Mr. Positive but that's something good to come outta y'alls Stadio della Swamp.

    Yes it was a less than suitable facility for MLS and, other than the 1996 All-Star Game, nothing remarkable stands out from the last 14 seasons (okay Cepero's goal was kind of neat, but credit that to the turf).

    I do have one fond soccer memory though, the Morocco-Saudi Arabia match in World Cup 94. The game all the naysayers said no one would attend. Me, my wife and 72,402 (almost 72,403 the lady sitting next to my wife was pregnant and my wife accidentally bumped here and startled her and I feared she might go into labor) spectators did, in fact, attend. The atmosphere was awesome, the energy pervasive. It was a good day.

    You've got more than just one lil "cheeky" post to quote there, sport. The majority rule, no?

    But ya know, just to make YOU so special and happy, your new stadium is freakin BOSS!

    while the NASL had tons of great memories in that stadium, it has been nothing but a curse to MLS....

    if there are any good songs about burning buildings down, they should be sung instead.
