Your lineup would cost about 30-50 million dollars in transfer fees and salaries.

You really think that is within the MLS rules?

The fact that Sport.es is running this story now as well gives it added credibility. That paper is basically a mouthpiece for the Catalan clubs.

You think we're gonna start next season in the new stadium relying on the star power of John Wolyniec?

We might have to. Henry isn't coming until after the World Cup. I'm assuming, of course, that France can get past Ireland.

I would not jump so much on this bandwagon even if Sport does publish the report. They're a bit "tabloid-ish" (based on my experience). I would start considering jumping on this story if ElMundoDeportivo.es started to say something or maybe even Avui.com, then I would really start believing the rumours.

In any case, I am really excited to even think of Henry joining the Red Bulls. Something exciting to see at our new home!

Come on now. You don't seriously believe that the statement NOT ("relying on the star power of John Wolyniec") = ("starting with Thierry Henry"), do you?

Exactly what Red Bull has in mind for next season is anyone's guess, except that, going by past performance, Mateschitz will find a way to f**k it up.

I'm an eternal optimist and would like to believe that they have learned their lesson after the debacle of this season.

So has anyone solved the major roadblock yet?

Barca owns Henry until 2011...so who is paying the transfer fee and how?

Onionsack, part of the MLS(/SUM)-Barca partnership deal might well facilitate this move. Not exactly news, but we're getting towards crunch time and I think Henry's trip to Ashburton Grove a couple weeks ago made him think carefully about his next move/s. He's always said he wants to play here. No reason to think he isn't serious.

Merde, man, don't count on Les Bleus v the Republic. ;)

I can see Henry and Sol Campbell in the side come mid-season next year (Youri as manager?). We've GOT to have some world-famous players for the first year at Riverbend.

Can't Redbulls sign Henry on giantic commercial deal? That way could open salary cap space.

    Example:

$ 10 million deal only if plays for New York

Dennis Rodman had similiar commercial deals

Yeah! Maybe they'll get a couple huge pop stars to open the 1st night too! Maybe Shakira, or Rianna, or WyClef. Or ALL three! Money and splash always works!

How about they build a relationship with the local/almost local community, develop a long-term plan for team success through developing youth/young pro's and signing decent/solid veterans, add in a couple very good players, put soccer people in charge of the soccer stuff (and leave them alone), and everything else will take care of itself?

EDIT: Cbr, post wasnt directed at you. Just that some have an idea that Henri coming here would solve any of the team's problems on or off the field. We have a pretty good fwd already and we're shit. Seems to me we need to build a solid all around team first, then we can worry about an all-star big name signing.

The owner is a businessman, he will contract Henry as a International Player through MLS for 500K or whatever will be the top salary in 2010 and sign a contract with him for 10 mil a year for three years as spoken person for his beverage business....

He will deduct the 10 mil from his taxes and every body happy....

I would love to see Henry come to our club and light up the net as well as teamming up with Angel to deliver tons and tons of goals. But I agree with most of the people, we need someone to feed the ball to them from the middle of the field instead of crossing it all the time from the flanks.

We need crossers, just as much as we need a passing specialist in the middle of the field. you can't eliminate one part of the field when you get the ball to your strikers from the other parts. As we all know the defenders will allow the ball to be brought along the ends and clog up the middle to stop the crosses, but when you have a dangerous player in the middle to join in on the attack, that type of player can feed the ball to both players.

If you have a top C.A.M. in the league and you tell him that we are going to have Angel & Henry as our striker tandum you will see those players signing up right away. In fact if you make a deal (I know he is out and done for the season, but just follow me on this) with the Revs during the super draft and bring over Brian Ralston and tell him that he will have alot of fun feeding the ball to those two, he would come over in a heartbeat.

If you get Dilly Duka or sign Matt Kassel right away and you see these guys giving the ball to both men, then it's going to be a fun season next year. Other than that just the star power of Thierry Henry is not enough when you have no one feeding the ball to them.

More of a question about future RBNY contracts than just with Henry. Isn't it possible for RBNY to offer RBNY players smaller contracts for playing, and largest "sponsorships" for the red bull brand so they still end up with the same amount of money? Seems like a great way to go around the salary cap, and would help get Henry a lot.

Everything I wrote is within the MLS rules.

First off, there would be no transfer fees paid in my plan. Juan Pablo Angel is already on the team, and David Beckham is already under contract to MLS. If the Red Bulls acquire Beckham, that will be an "internal" MLS trade and no transfer fee will be generated.

Zinedine Zidane is under contract to no club. Acquiring him would not cost any money on transfer fees.

Thierry Henry is currently under contract to Barcelona until May, 2011, according to reports. If the Red Bulls are to acquire Henry, it will likely happen in one of the following scenarios:

    1) Henry plays in the 2010 World Cup for France, and then plays the 2010-2011 Spanish season with Barcelona -- and then Henry comes to the Red Bulls in June or July of 2011.

    2) Henry plays the 2010 World Cup for France, and while still under contract to Barcelona for the 2010-2011 season, he publicly signs an MLS contract (and a Red Bull endorsement contract) during that season (much like David Beckham announced his MLS contract while still under contract to Real Madrid).

And then we're likely to see Henry claim some minor annoying injury that will keep him from playing regularly for Barcelona (why get hurt when tens of millions of dollars await in New York?).

Frustrated with Henry's inconsistent playing time, Barcelona at that point either decides to cut him loose immediately with no transfer fee, or perhaps Barcelona lets him go early enough in time for Henry to start the 2011 MLS season on Opening Day.

Worst case scenario: Henry, again, comes in June or July of 2011.

Best case scenario: Barcelona, knowing the Red Bull deal is imminent, tells Henry to get lost right after the 2010 World Cup and Henry arrives in New York in August, 2010.

So again, let me state emphatically -- the Red Bulls can have Juan Pablo Angel, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry in their lineup by 2011 with no transfer fees paid.

    As to salaries:

Juan Pablo Angel, then in his mid-30's will be due for a pay cut. Pay him $150,000 or $200,000 (plus some endorsement money on the side), and he'll take it because he will have no other choice. Total layout to keep him around until 2012 or 2013, maybe an additional $2-million.

David Beckham's MLS salary is reportedly around $6.5-million per year. That money is already spent. He's under contract until the end of the 2011 season. No additional money will need to be spent (other than hiring a moving truck).

Zinedine Zidane will be 37 in 2010. If Beckham was worth $6.5-million per year when he signed with MLS at age 31, Zidane should not be signed for more than $2-million per year ($250,000 or $300,000 against the cap). Sign him to a two-year contract with an additional optional season at the league's discretion. Total layout: approximately $6-million dollars.

Thierry Henry will be expensive. But again, if Beckham was worth $6.5-million per year at age 31, Henry should only cost about $4-million per year maximum ($400,000 against the cap) at age 33. Sign him to a three-year contract. Total layout for Henry: approximately $12-million.

All together, new salaries for these four guys (not counting Beckham's salary which is already spent) would come out to somewhere between $18-million and $20-million.

In international soccer, that is a bargain basement price to put together a lineup of that star-quality for three, or so, years.

Imagine the billboards, print ads, and television commercials promoting Red Bull beverages all over Europe, South America, and North America (not to mention Asia and Africa, as well) with close-up images of David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Juan Pablo Angel -- all wearing Red Bull uniforms.

    This is a no-brainer at $20-million.

That is simply lunacy. The rest of your post, well it is just wishfull thinking.

I don't think that anyone would dislike your lineup, but i think that in order to build a team you need to go baby steps. Thats is how you build long term.

I think we'd be better off signing an Argentine playmaker in the mold of Schelotto than wasting milllions on Henry. Anyone know if Riquelme is avaiable?

except how do you get 3 DPs? What do we give LA for beckham (here, how about kandji and a draft pick?). Zidane doesn't want to play anymore.

our best bet is Henry's age, salary and cache built up at Barca allows them to let him go for a nominal fee after this WC.
