This will likely be our last game of the season.
Crew have the Shield so can rest players---if---they wish
Should know from the Saturday results if we are eliminated from the playoff
If eliminated the Revs should play the youngsters.

What date is the 2010 draft?

I think Chivas still has a chance to win the shield. If they win on Thu, then the Crew will have to play to win on Sunday.

From Revs perspective, then I guess we hope Chivas loses or draws that Wed game which would allow Crew to rest players (although that means we have to root for the Fire)

Very depressing or if results go our way will make for a crazy Sunday

    Fixed your post ;)

Just being a realist as usual. :D When I look at our recent form and the results that need to go our way i'd say the odds makers would give us about a 1 in 10 chance of limping into the playoffs.

Has Columbus lost back-to-back this season? I'd give us a better chance if CBus won last week, but they took a tough loss to DC and will likely want to end the season on a high note.

I generally like Columbus' team and admire their style of play, but for some reason I freaking HATE Steven Lenhart. So he'll probably have a brace.

even if we make the playoffs, it will be a short trip. ********ing up the crew's shot at the shield would make me call this a successful season.

I'd be happy playing spoiler on the shield.:D

With the Revs pretty much out unless some miracles occur along the way. I hope the Revs still play for the win. Although the season goal was a FAIL, at least ending the season with a win would be nice. I know it's wishful thinking considering we are playing the Crew.

If you count Champions League, then yes they have lost two in a row; they lost on Aug. 26 at Cruz Azul and Aug. 30 at New York.

Well see it'd be better if the Fire lose because then they get dragged into the crapheap. At 42 points, a Rev win in Columbus would at least match their effort.

Revs are so far behind on GD that the Fire don't really matter to them anymore.

We do play the very final game of the season, so we will know all the scores and results of the other games before we even kickoff, and be able to clearly calculate exactly what we need to do to edge our way into the playoffs.

Chicago loosing to Chivas is actually a really bad thing for us. We want them to stay in the automatic berth spot or else they could drop into the wild card running, and we'd have to scored about 9 goals.

But of course Chicago isn't the one to really worry about.

    Head-to-Head
    Revs vs TFC - L/T = loss
    Revs vs FCD - W/L = tied
    Revs vs DCU - T/W = win

    [EDIT]
Scenario 1: If TFC and Colorado wins, game over.

    [EDIT]
Scenario 1b: If TFC wins and Colorado looses, we must win.

Scenario 2: If TFC ties, we must win.

Scenario 3: If FCD wins then we need to win by 9+(difference of FCD scoreline)+1 goals. Of course if they win that means they had a goal difference of at least +1 which makes the equation above 11 goals minimum ("so your saying there's a chance!")

Scenario 4: If FCD ties, we must win.

Scenario 5: If DCU wins, we must win.

Scenario 6: If DCU ties, we must win, or tie if TFC and FCD looses.

    Scenario 7: If DCU, TFC, and FCD loose, we must tie or win;

That about covers it. So technically there is only one result that could eliminate us from the playoffs and that's the TFC/Colorado win. If they drop points then its game on. I personally would love to see the Scenario 3 get us into the playoffs :D

With that said there are only two scenarios where we can tie to advance, which is Scenario 6/7. So this match is pretty much looking like a must win.

What even worse...TFC, DCU, and FCD play teams that are either mathematically eliminated, or clinched.

TFC plays NYRB. This isn't looking good at all since that's a "should win" match for TFC.

Same for DCU who play the Wiz.

FCD has the toughest match of the three against the sounders, even though they clinched.

Not only do the others play teams with really nothing to play for, we have to play a against the best team in the league who are still looking to secure the SS with a win, just in case Chivas gets 6 points this week.

I think we gonna make it ;)

There are a lot of strange scenarios in which the Revs could make the play-offs (THESE ALL ASSUME THE REVS BEAT COLUMBUS). The easiest would obviously be if 3 of Colorado, Toronto, D.C. and FC Dallas draw or lose (all 4 of these teams are on the road).

If Toronto and Dallas lose/draw, the Revs would be in regardless of the D.C. result, since D.C. loses head-to-head.

If Toronto lose/draw, but Dallas, and D.C. win (Colorado's result becomes irrelevant), the Revs would be in. (3 way tie with Dallas and D.C. Head-to-head: Revs 2-1-1, Dallas, 1-1-2, D.C. 1-1-2).

If Colorado and Dallas lose/draw, and Toronto and D.C. win, the Revs are in (3 way tie with D.C. and Toronto: Toronto 2-0-2, Revs 1-1-2, D.C. 0-2-2).

If Colorado lose/draw, Toronto, D.C., and Dallas win, the Revs are in (Toronto 2-1-3, Revs 2-2-2, Dallas 2-2-2, D.C. 0-2-2, THEN GOES BACK TO HEAD-TO-HEAD, minus Toronto: Revs 2-1-1, D.C. 1-1-2, Dallas 1-2-1)

Probably missed a few too, but basically the common theme is if Colorado and Toronto both take full points, Revs won't be making the play-offs. If not, there's probably still a shot and a D.C. win can only help the Revs chances.

Chicago losing can only realistically get D.C. a spot as 2nd in the East, since they are the only team with a head-to-head advantage (even with multiple East teams tied at 42). Although who wins this head-to-head: DC, Revs, Chicago (D.C. 2-1-2, Revs 1-0-3, Chicago 0-2-3)? By winning-percentage Revs do, by points DC does. Add in Toronto: (Toronto 2-1-3, D.C. 2-2-3, Revs 1-1-4, Chicago 1-2-4).

Can't really see Chicago losing helping, though it's confusing.

Looks like I was beat to it!

However this is true, only if Colorado wins too.

Also TFC losing and Dallas and Colorado winning, but not D.C., pretty much eliminates the Revs too (since it would come down to GD with Dallas).

shizza i totally forget about the Rapids. but yea there is no way we can tie them in points so the only way they affect us is with a win paired with a TFC win to eliminated us for good.

That is kinda funny how a DCU win can actually help us a little bit since it beefs up our head-to-head standing in case we tie with FCD!!!

    So...go DCU AND Dallas...

One thing is for certain, when people bring up the "regular season is meaningless" conversation, I will point to this season. An extra point from any of the games we played this season would make our postseason hope a little bit brighter.

Colorado loosing would be great for all of us 39 pointers since it pretty much opens up a second wild card spot for the taking.

As more than half the teams in the league make the playoffs, the regular season is meaningless.

But anyway, it's fun to think when we blow points in the first quarter of the season and everyone says it doesn't matter, the games don't matter till September anyway. Oops.

This is why I've always hated the "this part of the season doesn't really matter, Nicol's teams ALWAYS play better at the end anyway" [which isn't factual anymore anyway) argument.

    Playoff scenarios explained in detail

Well this should clear things up...

    Here’s the gist.

We only own the tiebreaker with D.C., so finishing tied for eighth place and level on points with United gets us into the playoffs. But that’s the only clear entry in if we’re tied with another team. We don’t hold the tiebreaker with any other team with whom we’re currently tied, or one with whom we could be tied after this weekend’s games.

In the cases of Salt Lake, Dallas and Toronto, we need to finish with more points than they have because all three teams hold some level of tie-breaker tiebreaker on us entering the weekend (Salt Lake - head-to-head, Dallas - goal differential, Toronto - head-to-head).

However (and this is where it starts to get confusing), if we end up tied with multiple teams, there are different scenarios.

Basically, if multiple teams are tied, they go into a mini-pool and the team with the most points per game in matches involving those teams advances on. So, in those cases, the following scenarios exist:

    Mini Pool (winner)

    Chicago-Dallas-New England: Dallas

    Colorado-Salt Lake-New England: Salt Lake

    Dallas-D.C. -New England: New England

    Dallas-New England-Toronto: Dallas

    D.C.-New England-Toronto: Toronto

    Chicago-Dallas-D.C.-New England: D.C.

Colorado-Salt Lake-Dallas-New England: Goal Difference between RSL and FCD

    Colorado-Salt Lake-D.C.-New England: Salt Lake

    Colorado-Salt Lake-New England-Toronto: Toronto

    FC Dallas-D.C.-New England-Toronto: Toronto

    Colorado-Salt Lake-Dallas-D.C.-New England: Colorado

    Colorado-Salt Lake-Dallas-D.C.-New England-Toronto: Toronto

Five teams have clinched, leaving 3 playoff spots. If Chicago and Colorado win, no one can catch them (and RSL is out) leaving 1 playoff spot for the 4 teams with 39 points: NE,DC,TOR and DAL.

Of all the tie-breaker combos, we lose every one involving Toronto, so we need help from NY.

That may be true if the only thing that matters to you is winning the Cup et al. Some people find it meaningful to go to the regular season matches to see their team play soccer and win the match they played that day. IMO, every regular season match and every point matters.
