I'll repeat what I wrote in the pbp thread:

Weber may have shown promise, but I thought both of the goals were soft. I'm pretty sure Cannon saves at least one of them if not both.

his decision on the second goal is certainly suspect. either come and get it or stay on the line for the effort. since he did not make it to the ball first, he should have chose the latter. however, a person can always second guess his intention...particularly a former keeper.

My thoughts Player by Player, reminder I missed first 20 minutes

Weber: One great save, a few routine ones, but arguably to blame for the 2nd Goal, overall bien, bright future.
Leitch: Very good, on defense and offense, MOTM
Burling: Good display on both sides. Did what was needed mostly, but not clearing.
McD: Easy finish, some good stops, but not sepctacular, and we need people to clear the ball.
Corrales: Some real good tackles and clears, but also some horrible mistakes, and I think was suspect for his marking on the 2nd goal. Didnt add to the offense at all.
Shea: Some great runs, awesome assist, but faded in the last 10 minutes.
Elliot: Two blocked crosses sum up his positive contribtutions, lots of back passes...ugh!
Sanchez: Didn't Notice him, except for his high shot near the end. Dissappointed in him
Convey: Great effort, some good work getting back on D,a handful good crosses and shots, as well as broke up many Chivas attacks.
Alvarez: Lots of very wide shots, left footed dribbling going no where, but did earn our 1st corner.
Johnson: Good Goal, and a few good contributions but screwed up 2 or 3 great opportunities,

Q: Lots of running but little rewards, mostly lost the ball, and didnt pass, he can run though

Overall: We need to learn to clear the ball, or pass it when were under pressure on defense!!! But we're getting better mostly, Burling and McD have good height.
Mids could imrpove, esp in the Center, or at least Elliot could, Shea and Convey did real well,
and while RJ did the best, he, Q and AA all screwed up good chances IMO.

besides, the STUPID plays from weber, is it me, or do the Quakes play better when there is nothing on the line and the field is larger? the passing was crisper tonight in the first half and in the beginning of the second. glad to get the tie, but could have been 3 points. RJ, nice goal.

I agree. I think Joe might have stopped the first one, and from what I saw from Joe this season, I can picture him making the exact same mistake Weber made on the second.

Simon Elliott... great little pass to a Chivas attacker to help set the stage for their second goal. I really would rather see Ian Russell out there rather than Elliott. Come to think of it, I think I'd rather see Yallop out there rather than Elliott. Old news I know, but my god.

Shrader and Dayak kept talking about our tired legs during the second half. Sad but true. Our defense was literally sieve-like for long stretches. Not only that, but when we did thwart an attack and get possession in our end, how many times did we "clear" the ball (gently) to the Chivas attacking midfield?

Too bad Elliott and Alvarez and Convey and Corrales (and probably others) were constantly trying to dribble through four defenders (or in Elliott's case, one defender) and losing the ball. Dayak kept saying... "Frank's off the bench again...".

Okay, criticisms aside, it was nice to at least get a point down there. It's an achievement, even if we probably should have held that lead and taken all three. If I were Preki right about now, I'd be shaking my head.

    We Suck!!

    First Half
Our guys killed tons of offensive chances without any intervention from the GoatShaggers. Convey passed to no one or just gave it away dribbling several times. Arturo dribbled into trouble, gave up the ball, and the Goats got their first goal on the break! Damn! And Arturo could have passed to another Quake instead of dribbling into two or three GoatShaggers. Corrales received a ball early and then turned it back instead of attacking! Genius that! Also, the GoatShaggers attacked down our left side repeatedly because Ramiro got caught up field and had no speed to recover. Z would have at least hustled back. He might not have been effective but he would have been in the play instead of totally AWOL. Way too many of our guys passed the ball back when they could have gone forward. Elliott had two really weak free kicks. He should never get another chance. Alvarez loses the ball again when he could have passed the ball to an open RJ. Oh, way too many passes in the air, even short passes in the air when we could have and should have kept in on the ground. At 43' Salinas makes a terrible pass to the Goats that should have gone to an open forward for a shot on goal. 44 A Goat commits a blatant take down foul on RJ near the sideline. No call, ought to be a yellow in any league.

    Halftime -
JD blows chunks like a drunken frat boy. WTF?! Convey has played terrifically since we moved him out wide?! Are you out of your freaking mind?! Maybe he was just being diplomatic? Let's hope.

    Second Half
More of the same crap. RJ whiffs on a nearly open net. Arturo continues to give the ball away at an alarming rate. Most of our players pretend they don't notice that Sanchez is wearing our jersey. 73 Elliott makes a run into the box, gets the ball, then passes backwards to no one. We lose possession. 74, yellow to GoatShaggers for tackle on Corrales. About the same as the tackle on Convey moments before in the box that got no call at all. (The ref could have given us a free kick from the edge of the box. That turd got nothing but foot.) Q on for AA. Lousy sub. Even if you want to replace AA, the important sub would have been Ribeiro for Elliott. Elliott was totally gassed and we were giving up possession in the midfield at a very high rate. Ribeiro would have helped with that. Or at the least, we could have brought Pitch on for Elliott and moved McD up to CM and put Pitch on the backline. Or, how about TWO SUBS?! Pitch for Burling, who was tired, and Ribeiro for Elliott!! and even Q for AA! Wow! some fresh legs! What a thought! Lilingston was doing great for the Goats because he was fresh and Elliott who is slow to begin with was tired and Sanchez was tired because he'd been covering for Elliott's lack of pace all night. Frank sucks. 88, foul on RJ, shoved to the ground. Clearly a yellow card, but no dice. Would have been the second yellow for that GoatShagger. 89, Sanchez with either a terrible shot on goal, or a deflected shot. I'm pretty sure a Goat tipped it up. Hard to tell from TV. In stoppage, Q makes a run to the endline. Goat knocks it out. Goats get the goal kick, ought to have been a corner.

    Ref sucks.

Hardly matters because we stink and our coach doesn't know how to counter good subs by the opposing coach. Oh, how did the ref miss the deliberate foot pass to Thornton that Fat Zack caught with his hands?! WTF?!

I'm pissed. But I must say, I expected us to lose before the game, so this was a good result on the road. But, watching the game, we ought to have put it away. And yeah, the second Goats goal is on TheAndrew. Leitch still one of our best players. Why do our guys not work well together this late in the season?! Why were so many of our players flagged in the 65th minute?!

Both our goals were good. So we do know how to play. But mentally our guys are just not ready for prime time. Naturally, I blame Frank.

    We suck.

Weber did great. For a guy who's young and been on the sidelines all season, it was great to see him step in for a full game. He was almost there to punch out what turned into the second goal, but hopefully he learns from that mistake. Nice to see his youth and athleticism and making some nice saves. I hope the Quakes keep him for next season, as soon as Joe is ready to step out or he leaves, it's nice we have him ready to step in.

I loved that goal from Johnson. Those lobbed balls that float just over the reach of keepers are always fantastic!

Sanchez spent most of the game covering for Elliott's lack of pace, spine, ability to tackle, and common sense. So he played pretty deep most of the night. Also, he made some passes to other players, then ran into space, but didn't get the ball back. A lot of our guys seemed not to notice that he was wearing our jersey.

AA did a lot of running, held the ball well a couple of times, took a couple of bad shots, and mostly ran into trouble and coughed up the ball. Someone else said that AA mess up some good chances. I agree with that completely.

    go quakes!

Sanchez is the best player on our team. Fit, absolutely solidly held down the center. We'd have made the playoffs I suspect if he'd have come at the beginning of the season and forced the useless Corrales out of there.
He had 2-3 giveaways, but not dangerous stupid ones, just trying to create and it didn't come off.

Alvarez was so-so. Hit some wickedly hard shots and got to know one.

You didn't notice him because he wasn't giving the ball away right, left and center. He was absolutely solid and one of the only guys fit enough for 90 despite playing Wed and traveling. He was the best ball winner we had.

He played 15 minutes and put RJ through one v one on the keeper with a beautiful pass, except RJ screwed it up and was offside with no excuse. Cornell Glen would make that run on time and finish it.
A couple of times it was a simple issue of no support because Yallop left leggless dog tired Elliott and Alvarez on the field as if Ribeiro and Zaher are just there to hold the bench down. And I he lost the ball a heck of lot less per touch than Salinas or Convey.

You're losing it. We played a team in contention for supporters shield that's on a good run of form pretty much evenly on the road missing 5 starters.
It was a good performance. "We suck" no longer means anything if you say it with equal facility even those times when we didn't.

We just tied the team that had the inside track on the Western Conference title and a great shot at the Supporters Shield, playing very shorthanded, on the road. Yes, lots of guys didn't look that good, and definitely ran out of gas. For the ones who just flew back from International Duty, it's understandable. For some of the others (Salinas, Johnson, Corrales) it's surprising. The team has had a tough stretch, but they had a full week off so I would have expected more energy from those guys.

But they played with heart, didn't give up after giving up an early goal, and did some good things. Leitch really played well, and he showed some leadership trying to organize the defense late in the match. McDonald and Burling broke up a lot of chances when the midfield in front of them wasn't doing much to slow down the Chivas offense. Johnson had a very nice goal, and Convey looked good taking the defenders on. But he needs to learn when to give it up, he reminded me of Arturo. Some "wow" moments when he beats the first defenders, but then some "wft" moments when he keeps trying to dribble instead of passing. In his defense, I'm not sure Johnson and Arturo were doing much showing for the ball and making runs, so when Convey beat someone there weren't that many passing options. Probably my biggest disappointment was Salinas. He had a great cross on the first goal, but otherwise he was pretty much absent, or he was turning the ball over.

But imagine if they had Luiz in the midfield, Hernandez on defense, and Wondo available to start or sub up top or at midfield. Could have been a very different game. I'm still positive about how this team is playing and looking forward to next year.

    OK, you're right. Wait!!

There we go! You agree with me! "Legless, dog-tired, Elliott and Alvarez!" Take that! I agree totally that Sanchez was our best player. Leitch got the assists and was really solid, but Sanchez did the hard work in the middle that legless, gutless, Elliott refused to do. Why does Frank keep playing Elliott?! He sucked like a Dyson from the opening kick?!

Salinas gave the ball away a ton. Convey gave the ball way a ton. Ribeiro and Zaher should have been on the pitch?! Are you drinking my special brew?

Yup!! RJ had some good plays and some bad ones. I noticed a header flick on to Alvarez in the opening mintues. Nothing came of it, but at least Alvarez was in the right position to get it. Q won us a corner that the stinking ref gave to the GoatShaggers as a goal kick. Corrales was out of position most of the night. He gave the ball away a lot. He wouldn't pass to Sanchez. He should have been covering Galindo on the first goal. TheAndrew can be blamed for the second goal.

So let's see, we've just ripped AA, Convey, Shea, Corrales, Elliott, and TheAndrew a little bit. That's six guys. Oh, and Yallop for not making more subs. Yallop for leaving legless, dog-tired Elliott on the pitch. (My dog is sleeping on the bed even as I type!) But hey, we don't suck right?

The GoatShaggers played poorly. However much they may have been on form lately, tonight they were not good. We gave up too many chances, made poor clearances, and whiffed on most of the few chances we had.

Sorry, we suck. We should have won that game. At 2 to 1 we should have stood on their throats. If we had brought on Ribeiro for Elliott right after we scored and maybe Pitch for Burling or better yet AA and then moved McD to D-mid and played a 4-5-1 to the end we'd have brought home three points. But we didn't because we suck. Drink it.

    Go Quakes! :(

He did do some keeping up with Gallindo, which is a contribution. But in addition to the passes to no one and the hospital ball problem that you mention, what drives me crazy is on his back passes he almost never will turn and break so he can get the ball back on the break. He stands there flat footed watching the game go by. I don't see why that isn't coachable? It's not rocket science that standing there to watch what the person you passed it back to does with the ball contributes nothing.

The failure to substitute is a bad Yallop mistake in my opinion. We can find noteworthy fault with a few players' performances. We can find some mistakes with everyone's performance as you always can. You can find some faults with any team on any day. It simply doesn't equate to "we suck."
You have to look at the good with the bad and this is a good result considering who we didn't have, where we played, who we played and that they had actually something to play for. I don't know the final foul tally, but I heard 13-3 at some point. That means they're pretty cautious about not getting injured given how thin the bench is and we are out of the playoffs so it's smart not to go getting more players on the injured list and hoping their fit again by January (not to mention forgoing any chance for offseason development many of them need) in essentially meaningless games. So, without being able to even get stuck in, wisely I think, we still stayed in it and and played them even........ by playing soccer instead of typical MLS "foul and hope the ref is on your side" MLS thing.

Are you nuts?! One of the few things we agree with here is that Yallop's coaching tonight sucked. We almost lost the game because Frank refused to go to the bench when it was clear that the starters were tired and the GoatShagger's subs were running circles around our guys. Frank made one sub!! One!! A forward for a forward. But we were getting out hustled in the midfield!

He should have pulled Elliott for Ribeiro and maybe Corrales for Zaher. That would have stiffened our spine a bit.

And where did you get Frank's job is on the line?! There's nothing about that in the article you linked?!

    Drinking while posting again?!

I don't know about that. Being there in person it looked to me like they were actually sloppier than usual. Too many balls passed right to a Chivas player, particularly in the middle and left back.

As for Weber, the second goal was on him, but overall I'm not convinced Joe would have done any better. Infact I suspect one or two of the saves might have even gone by Joe.

Overall we were lucky to get the draw. That said, considering our injury sheet right now and the competition (in contention for the supporter's shield) we did alright.
