Angela Hucles Retires from WPS and International Soccer

Westwood, Mass. (October 16, 2009)Angela Hucles, a Boston Breakers veteran and 2008 Olympic hero, has announced her retirement from professional soccer. Hucles will not travel with the U.S. National Team for its match against Germany on October 29 and she will not return for the second season of Women’s Professional Soccer after playing with the Breakers in 2009.

    Um, who's left?

There's no truth to the rumor that female members of Riptide have been contacted about playing holding midfield for 2010.

D@mn. This retirement seems out of the blue to me. I mean if it was something she was considering, don't you think she would have declined the camp invite?

runs off the US WNT N&A

eta: she's had a relatively injury free career, too. Anyone know what she's going to do next?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I believe I heard a rumor of this right as the season was ending. Revs Fan 1, do you remember hearing something from the K-man?

Who would have guessed back in 2001 that Kristine Lilly would be the last one left 9 year later?

I wish her well. She was always one of my favorites. It was great to watch her career rise, from being a relatively late WUSA draft pick to the USWNT's leading goalscorer in the Olympics.

Looks like our USWNT contingent is dwindling. LePeilbet's the only one left. Right now, I think the only position we're solid at is attacking midfield. We could use a goalkeeper, a holding midfielder, some defenders to replace the likes of Mitts, Weber, Chapman, and Goffi, and a striker (though Weimar is a step in the right direction on that front).

“I always wanted to involve myself in things I was passionate about and give 110 percent,” said Hucles. “I feel like I’ve come to a point where I no longer can give that much and I know that there are other players who are ready to step up to the plate in order to bring the World Cup trophy back to the U.S. and carry on the growth of professional women’s soccer in the United States as well.”

Angela will be missed. I enjoyed seeing her work her way onto the USWNT.

Best wishes to her for whatever she decides to do.

Okay so last season we had 5 WNT members correct? Lil, A-Rod, Hucles, Mitts and LePeilbet and starting the season next year we will be down to 2. And lost another of our starting defenders to the draft... All this and we will be better next year? The Mitts and Hucles situations must have been known by the team so how was Webber not protected??? I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Did Lil get a cap after being assigned to the Breakers? Can't remember.

Mitts? Yeah, I think that was known to be a possibility. But I don't think anyone (possibly including Hucles herself) thought Hucles was going to retire. She went to the recent camp & made the 18 for the Germany game. I take her at her word that she just realized she didn't have the fire anymore.

Well I would have guessed she'd be the last one left, but more like 12 or 14 years later... :D
