I'm just amazed at the right-wing response to this. It didn't surprised me when people like Glenn Beck, Rush and Malkin creamed their panties over this. But for other conservatives --the not bat-shit crazy ones-- to cheer that America lost...that did take me by surprise. It doesn't seem like there are any sane conservatives anymore all there's is left is the angry, unhinged wingers who don't really care what happens to the country. All they care about is scoring points against Obama. Pathetic.
It could be the IOC decision has a positive influence on this Presidency if it opens Obama’s eyes and he realizes that world politics is more than a catchy slogan and a charismatic smile. Better to learn this lesson on an Olympic bid rather than a more important issue... like Iran going nuclear.
Hey, nice neg-rep you gave me. If you're going to troll, own up to it and man up. But don't neg-rep my post just to get back at me.
As an outsider, I fell compelled to mention that this post has been written many times in this forum over the past nine years. Only now it's the left writing about the right. No one does partisan hysteria like Yanks do partisan hysteria. It's just what you do.
because a lie told often enough becomes the truth to the uninformed.... so the root cause is: why so many people are either uninformed or poorly informed?
Except ACORN didn't commit election fraud. It's like saying OJ didn't commit rape. I mean, he could have, there's no reason to think he did, at least that we know of.
Kai Holm also mentioned that Tony Blair spend 3 full days on the London Olympic Bid... Obama on the other hand only spend around one hour with the IOC members and the rest of the 5 hour visit in Denmark at the Danish Parliament, talking to the Danish Royal family and talking politics with the Danish PM (I guess mainly about the UN climate summit in Copenhagen later this year)... .
Even Rupert Murdoch said that getting the broadcast rights to the Olympics is a money loser. Chicago dodged a bullet financially IMO. 10 years from now you'll be hearing Brazilians complaining about all the debt they racked up to host this thing.
You might be right. But protesting a useless war because Bush had a bone to pick with a 2-bit dictator WAS good for America. Ultimately America lost on that Texas-sized gamble. 9/12 protests by white bread America supporting health care companies are just lame. Some RW loons are actually HOPING for a terrorist attack on Obama's watch just so they can prove some kind of point about "Bush keeping us safe." Anti-govt. militias are on the rise all over as is the number of threats against the president reported to the Secret Service. So after years of hearing "the left hates America", people know who the true America-haters really are.
There's no doubt that hating on Obama is Job #1. None at all. Even the Center for American Prosperity is cheering because a bid to host the Olympics that Obama was only tangentially involved with failed. http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1460906593?bctid=43158474001 Ridiculous. So, really, who hates America?
Except the 2002 Winter Games were pretty good for SLC. And Romney (remember - one of the "not-crazy" conservatives, which is why he got waxed in the primaries, and the guy who ran the 2002 Winter Olympics) thought Obama should throw his weight behind the bid. http://www.lifeinthevalley.com/olympic_winter_games.html
I guess it would be kind of hard for an organization to do anything. However, its employees have been convicted of voter fraud. Better?
I'm no fan of ACORN. In fact, I'd be happy if they just disappeared. But for Christ's sake, get your facts straight. It's not possible for ACORN to commit election fraud because they have nothing to do with elections. The case for voter registration fraud is even tenuous, because there is no evidence that it was policy of ACORN to fraudulently register voters. Is there a ton of evidence that poor management and dishonest ACORN employees took created an environment where registration documents were forged? Absolutely. But there is a big difference between it being the policy of ACORN to do it, and crappy oversight and dishonest employees doing it because of laziness and the desire to make some easy money. So good riddance to ACORN. There is plenty of factual evidence about a lot of things to support their exit from the political stage -- but "election fraud" isn't one of them.
There are a lot of left-of-center Americans (and Chicagoans) who didn't want the Olympics here. This isn't necessarily about political ideology. I would rather the President not have done anything or said anything about the Olympic bid at all.
The willful ignorance is just simply overwhelming. Personally, I don't know how much more of this insanity I can take. I think the wingnuts are going to win just because the reasonable people are going to throw up their hands and quit trying. It's draining. It'd be a lot easier just to give up and move to Canada, where things don't seem quite so moronic. Sure - but it just seems weird to me to cheer something like this (even high-fives!), especially with most estimations putting hosting the Olympics as a net economic positive. I don't remember widespread cheering when NYC failed to win their bid, despite it happening under a GOP President and Mayor (tho, wisely, Bush recognized he'd have no positive impact w/ the IOC in 2004...). I don't really care that they didn't get the bid. I mean, whatever. But I'm stunned at the response from right-wingers. For them, it's all about hating Obama - and they don't care who else gets the collateral damage.
I understand where you're coming from, I just don't want people who were against Chicago bidding for the Olympics to be painted with a broad brush to be right wingers. I worked on the guy's campaign and shared a lot of high fives about it yesterday. Politically speaking, there was nothing for him to gain from getting involved, and in the aftermath you can see why.
I'm trying to recall of at least one incident during the Bush years in which "the left" cheered and celebrated an American defeat. I just can't come up with one...
As a Europern I dont really understand why some ppl in the US blame Obama ?... Ther is no chance that a republican president could have done any better than Obama in this case... especially since I dont think a republican president would have use more time on the Chicago Olympic bid than a democrat... .
