It is time to move on and create a new 2009 thread for the Broncos. Hopefully, the team will be back in hunt this year.
The recruits look great, Jerry says it is the best group in years. Hopefully they are the heathiest as well!
The 2005 and 2004 class red-shirts should be back and could offer some amazing combinations the were sorely missing last year especially in the midfield.
    Here we go.....

    Go Broncos!

Great idea, Peg! New season, new thread! The 2009 class looks great on paper with lots of national team and other ODP performers. Does anyone rank recruiting classes, and if so, how do the Broncos stack up?

SoccerBuzz.com usually does a ranking, nationally, regionally, and by conference. It usually happens in the spring, once most programs do their press release announcements.
Not sure about other publications like Topdrawersoccer, SoccerAmerica, etc.

Just wanted say to you Santa Clara Fans, we in Chicago have one of your former players in Brittany Klein playing for the Red Stars. I am amazed at her play. Never expected it. She, IMO is the work horse for the Red Stars. What she does in the mid field may get unnoticed but us RS fans notice the things she does. Great player. And a very nice goal by her against the Breakers tonight.

Yes, MRAD, we Bronco fans all know what a true spark plug Brittany is, and none of us are at all surprised that she is doing well in Chicago. She is also a terrific person and we are all looking forward to seeing her in June at the game at Santa Clara. Thanks for the kind words, MRAD.

Yes, the Broncos look like they will be back and tough this year. Will the coaches be red shirting any of the 2009 players? It looks like they have some strong 2010's that will build on this year. Are the coaches complete for their 2010's? What other positions do you think they will need to fill and why?

Just wanted to add that the Chicago Red Stars have 3 former Santa Clara Broncos in the starting line-up in Klein, Igwe, and Dalmy and all 3 are playing superb professional soccer.

Any truth tothe rumors that Katherine Reynolds may leave Santa Clara to join professional soccer, perhaps the Chicago Red Stars?

Wow, interesting thought. Kat and Marian Dalmy basically played the same role at SCU, defensive wing coming all the way up for crosses, corners, etc. Dalmy was amazing and proved it with SCU, the US National Team, and now with the Red Stars. She is the real deal. Kat still needs to show she can deliver all season and not just here and there like the last few years at SCU.
Let her finish her senior year and get drafted next January in the college draft if she really has the chops.

    2009 Spring Season

Anyone who can report on the last three Spring games? Results? Reviews? Everyone still healthy?

Haven't checked the other sources but the Broncos reported that TopDrawerSoccer picked their 2009 recruiting class first in the WCC. I guess that's ok. Means they rank the class above Portland's. But for a school like Santa Clara you'd think it was the national rank that matters.

Did you catch this one-Stanford 3 Santa Clara 2.
The UC Davis match up saw SCU players out on national camp duty. Broncos came back from 2 goal deficit to challenge the Cardinal.

Wow, the 2009 SCU Broncos season opener is coming right up on August 21st, and it looks like Mr. Smith has the largest team in recent memory, with 30 currently on the roster. Lots of high powered Seniors and redshirts coming back for their 5th or 6th year.

Up front, we have Kiki Bosio, Lexi Orand, and Jordan Angeli returning for their final season.

In the midfield, we have Amanda Poach, Hailey Siegel, and Courtney Lewis managing the transition.

An in the back, Dani Potts, and Kat Reynolds are anchoring the back line.

Throw in some well seasoned Jrs and Sophs backed up with Henninger in goal, and it looks to be a pretty good team, to say nothing about the new recruits.

This could be an exciting year, and prove a counterpoint to last years injury filled disappointment. I expect Dani Potts, Kiki Bosio, and Kat Reynolds to duke it out for MVP, but have a hunch Amanda Poach will also give them a run for the money.

Any other thoughts or hopes for the season? Go Broncos!

Broncos had a pretty good recruiting class. The players you list above are going to have to produce if they want to see the field.

If Poach is healthy she'll be a force and the best player on the field.

SCU could surprise a ton of people this year if all the injured players are actually back in top shape and healthy. It will be a great mix of young and old and I think a lot of the players are playing with a huge chip on their shoulder. They want to make-up for last year's dismal season.

4-0 win to open the season isn't bad, even if it is against San Jose State. Anybody have any insight at to why Poach wasn't suited up? Is she still recovering? Not a good sign if that's the truth, I was really looking forward to watching her this season.

Very nice start to the season. Two wins, two shutouts, six goals by six different players including three freshmen. I know this wasn't USC or Notre Dame, but they looked very fit, very energetic, very aggressive, and they had high quality subs at every position. And UCSB is a good team against whom SCU had 17 shots to zero. Regarding Poach, she is not quite ready but barring any other injuries she will be back. The next three games will be interesting. Don't know if Utah, Georgetown or Maryland are necessarily better than UCSB but these are all away games against good teams. Could make for an interesting match up with Notre Dame is the Broncos are undefeated for that game...........

I agree, nice start. It's nice to see the team with energy and a bounce in their step - last season there was none of that.

The defense looks very sound. Only one shot allowed through the first weekend, even if the competition wasn't amazing, is a good thing. UCSB has a lot of team speed so it was nice to see the Broncos handle that well. Angeli back in the center of the defense is a huge help. Welcome back. I like the speed and the attacking nature of the outside backs.

As has been said, three freshmen scored. This bodes well for the attack. The team got good numbers forward and took quality shots. If not for an amazing game by the UCSB keeper (especially in the first half) the score would have been 5 or 6 - 0. Still missing a bit of solid combination play up top but with so many new faces, that is to be expected this early.

Midfield is what worried me the most. A bit slow. The transition was too direct and almost hesitant at times. Now, if Poach and Lewis are returning and what we saw were the second string, then this looks good but right now this is the team's weak link.

Glad to see the Broncos back to being the broncos... and wow, nice to see a relatively healthy bench for the first time in two years.

Agree with your analysis---First season watching this team and starting midfield seems to chase in circles and be late on many balls so far during the first two games which sure is not going to work against the likes of portland or stanford who will feast on our lack of pace in the center of the field. Poach and Lewis will make a huge difference and make timely releases to the forwards.

Although most of the WCC did ok opening weekend, USD lost 2 - 1 to Cal State Bakersfield.

The link below needs to work on its software. They show Pepperdine beating UNLV and Portland beating Oregon but having a losing record as a result.

What you're looking at is the record of the opposing team, meaning the record of UNLV in the case of Loyola Marymount (not Pepperdine) and the record of Oregon in the case of Portland. So for Portland, as an example, what you see in order is the game date, the opponent, the opponent's record, and the result against that opponent. Thus Portland on August 22 played Oregon, whose current cumulative record is 0-1-0, with Portland winning the game 3-0.

SCU loses 0-1 at Utah. The Broncos doubled up the Utes in shots and had 10 corner kicks to Utah's 1. Sounds like they dominated but couldn't score. Not too bad a result for a young team but surly one that got away.

Actually, it doesn't sound like anyone dominated, as both teams had 4 shots on goal.

A little reminder. To avoid posts by haters, add them to your "Ignore List." Each time they post you'll see that they posted, but instead of what they wrote you'll see "This message is hidden because Hater is on your ignore list." Instead of whatever the hater hoped to sow, you'll smile.
