This is good news. He's young and versatile. Let's hope he turns out as well as Jakovic did.

Defensive depth when we need it and a possible solution to a weak spot in the line-up?

This day keeps getting better and better.

Well, outside of the whole Pontius is hurt and won't be going to Toronto or Honduras thing....

He's got a quad injury, which is probably from playing so many minutes. If he needs to rest and get healthy, then so be it. We have Quaranta, MacTavish, and Fred to cover his position, so his short-term absence doesn't worry me.

Besides, if he was out for the TFC game, then it makes sense that he wouldn't play in the Honduras game. We don't need to rush players back from injury, especially for a game that's likely to see major line-up changes.

Understood but he's been probably our most consistent and best player this year IMHO. We're at a point where we need to start banging 3 points at a time. Having him out of the attack hurts.

It does hurt having him out, but he hasn't been as dangerous over the last few weeks. Maybe some time off will help get his focus back.

Big-time. This couldn't really happen at a worse time. Whoever said that we have McTavish and Fred to cover his position so it's no big deal, needs to get off the sauce. Pontius' real position is forward. Period. Khumalo is out. Moreno is old. Emilio is in a slump. N'Silu hasn't played well enough so far. Quaranta is generally found playing midfield. This is a huge loss for us if it lingers at all. Until he comes back, I'd have Quaranta playing forward, which is where he needs to be playing anyway, as far as I'm concerned.

Does the MLS injury list have any bearing on CONCACAF? In other words, is it possible that N'Silu could play in CONCACAF even if he can't play in MLS. Or is there a Collective Bargaining clause regarding this? Or is he actually hurt?

It would make sense to be worried if we were consistenty playing Pontius up top, but we haven't. And if you don't like Fred or MacT out wide, then how about Szetela? He's already played in that position during his brief time with us, and it frees Q to go up top.

And Emilio's in a slump? Didn't he score two goals for us in his last MLS game?

The fact that our coach doesn't use him in the correct position says more about the coach than it does about the player. He should be up top. And with the injuries to both Khumalo and N'Silu at the precise time that we have tons of games coming up, it's safe to assume that he would have gotten much more time up top as a consequence. So HIS injury at precisely that time is a huge loss to us, especially in light of the fact that the coach seems to like Q on the wing as well. That's simply bad news for us. And when Emilio scores a couple of goals to put us up 2-0 instead of late consolations in games that we simply are too far behind to win, I'll be more impressed. Yeah, I know, it's unfair. But life is unfair. The guy hasn't scored goals as of late when they would have maximum impact. That's what we need him to do. Hopefully he starts tomorrow.

Agreed. Which gives me a twist on old new idea:

For late season friendlies, let us fans vote on the formation and player selection for half a game, rather than the coach picking. That would certainly make it more interesting. ;)

I think about 80 percent of the world thinks Santino should be playing withdrawn forward, yet we never see him there.

Away at Toronto isn't a bad game for a sore player to miss. I think Danny has looked good thus far and will need to step forward. I think while some say Emilio is in a slump, Moreno and Gomez seem to be getting stronger as the season goes on. Santino seems to take awhile to get used to playing with the team, whether it's after a break, injury, or call up.

So which is more likely? Slotting Habarugira in and playing 4 in the back, or Burch losing his spot and sticking with the 3-5-2?

I like 3) Burch continues to develop into a solid defender in a 3-man backline, and Havanagila spells him occasionally, backs up Jakovic, and comes in as a centerback when we play an occasional 4-4-2.

Habarigura's 5'8", so he'd almost have to be an outside defender.
