This is the flip side of the franchise model - give some people enough rope, and they will hang themselves. But with any luck, there will be enough other teams to keep the league going.

But they're not out of business yet, though Sky Blue's attendance numbers are as worrying as their head coach issues.

As much as IMO, Sky Blue FC has been an embarassment to the league this year off the field, I do not want to see them fold. WPS needs a team in that in NY/NJ. I wish them luck in getting it together for next year.

They could very well sell the franchise to Red Bull, or at least partner with them. That would give them stability, and a nice place to play in.

And in that way Red Bulls can make JC Osorio head coach of SBFC and get rid of him without actually get rid of him.

Hasn't the history of this club and owner been about people/coaches leaving?

What do you mean?? They just got 5,400 at their last home game. That's a very good sign.

Look at the date of the post you quoted, RFR  (Aug2 vs. NJ's last home game on Aug5)
And even the good last-game draw doesn't really outweigh their season average very much...

That July 4th game killed us! I think a good lesson learned. NEVER have a game on July 4th.

Not sure what the final result is, but through their first nine games, their median attendance was 3,256, ahead of only Gold Pride.

If you get 5,000 at 10 matches @ $20 per ticket that would be 1 million dollars. Pay the players a living wage of $50,000 by 20 players and that takes your million. Now Travel-Equipment-Office staff-Coaching- insurance owners-field rental-on and on---hmmmm

yeah, I'm almost certain Sky Blue lost some money this year. The NeSmiths (FGCP owners) admitted early this week that they've lost $1million this season. They did however, said they were not going anywhere and that the Pride will be back next year.

I would assume that most of the teams will loose money this season. Someone mentioned academy camps as a good source of revenue; but it is difficult to know how much that brings to the team since enrollment might vary and we don't know how often these are held.

Yeah that $50,000 salary is inflated and owners of all teams expected to lose money this season I am sure.

Everyone lost money though, for sure. The thing is, they all KNEW they would so it isn't a surprise. Don't forget about sponsors either. They might not be putting up millions, but they are covering these basic expenses like food and equipment, etc. Little things like that go a long way.

If that's true, they're doing something wrong. July 4th games are golden for pretty much every other sports team in this country.

But WPS isn't a 12 month job. Many of these players will hold coaching/other paying jobs during the high school/college seasons that are just starting.

In my youth in the 1970s it wasn't uncommon for major league baseball players to work in the offseason in "regular" jobs, or to head to the Caribbean or Mexico to play "winter ball" to make ends meet.

The WPS season is very short, and is structured to allow players to hold seasonal jobs.

Not ideal - but they've got to start somewhere. And somewhere, as the WUSA showed, isn't at the WNBA/MLS level - much less the "big four" level.

What is the league minimum? 10K?

Most teams must have at least one player who makes around 50K or more.

I heard that developmental players all had a standard contract at $1000 per month, i.e. $6000 for the season. Most of the January Draft players got 20 to 25k, which is about $3500 per month before taxes.

Coaching and special appearances add more for the top names, but not much for the ones that really need it. Off season jobs and or playing in the European leagues are definitely required to live the dream.

It seems many of the players share apartments or houses to cut down on expenses.

Or stay with host families, as several Freedom players do.

Mead!! The season is very short??? Thank you master for letting them leave and go pump gas... The league takes up half their year!

You want a pro league? That means they all need to play and workout all year long...Its funny how some fans feel like these players should sacrifice everything for this league. I didn't know you go to games to watch coaches and owners..
