Did MLSnet make that up for their press releases -or- is this a nickname that's been running in RSL fan circles? I'm assuming MLSnet made it up because I've never heard it anywhere else (and for good reason, IMO)...What do you guys think of it?

Those are the official names of our red and blue colors. It's MLSnet's favorite thing to do in their articles to refer to a team with the nickname of primary color-and-secondary color. Usually it works better when they're real color names like red and black instead of stupid ones like cobalt or claret, but whatever. If they keep doing it, though, I bet you'll find that it starts catching on...

rsltothecore does it sometimes, and the posts always flame him for doing so...
I think if you make some comments on there saying it is retarded, it wont happen anymore. at least I hope that works

I didn't see your smiley face. Your being sarcastic right?

Claret and Cobalt is and never will be a nickname for the team. At least not until we start using Royals. ;)

I noticed KUTV listed RSL's colors as "Claret & Cobalt" during the broadcast of the game v. FCD. I'm sure that came from the RSLFO as well.

Personally, I don't mind it. It's much, much better than other popular iterations of Real Salt Lake, e.g., the 'lakers' or 'royals.'

true, if i had to rank the stupid nicknames we have but had to use them, this would be the order:
    Claret and Cobalt
    Royals (baseball?)
    Lakers (basketball?)
the real (stupidest thing ever heard)

Sounds like politics. The best of the worse wins. Or is it the least bad?

Some don't like it, but I have always thought that Royals was a good nickname for RSL. It fits with the club name and the fans. I also like that soccer clubs don't go by just their nicknames like most american teams (i.e. the Raiders, the Broncos, etc. compared to calling teams just by their official name like Real Madrid, Manchester United (although it is strange that some teams are called mostly by their nicknames like Bolton Wanderers or Wolves (and BTW, what the heck is a Baggie?)))(see unnecessary rant).

Royals is (are?? stupid soccer engilsh) (see another unnecessary rant) cool, we should use it.

The Baggies nickname is from the baggy moleskin trousers worn by their supporters around 1896 or so (they were all iron-workers, who needed protection from hot iron) and who went to the Saturday afternoon matches after work in their working clothes. The nickname was given to them by rival Aston Villa supporters.

So what you are saying is that at some point in time Colorado may actually adopt "Crapids" as their nickname? :D

Maybe I don't completely understand the question, but using nicknames for soccer teams is very widespread. Manchester United is often called ManU by most everyone I can think of as opposed to City for Manchester City (or Nottingham City or Stoke City, etc.), along with Barca for Barcelona. My sainted wife and most Italians call AC Milan just Milan with Inter Milan being called Inter and Juventus being called Juve. The Dutch call Ajax Amsterdam just Ajax, with Sparta for Sparta Rodderdam and Feyenoord for Feyenoord Rodderdam. I sometimes find that the nickname of the team is used more than the real name of the team, which makes it hard to figure out where the team home stadium is. For example, FC Bruges is easy but unless you have lived in Belgium, who would know where Anderlecht is or what city Standard plays in? You also have the language barrier to content with. When I was in Germany, the sports scores always showed a team in the Italian league called Mainland. It took a while to figure out that Mainland is Milan in German. Belgium has the same problem only worse. Anvers (french) is Antwerpen(flemish), Liege (french) is Liuk (flemish) but who decided that Mons (french)is called Bergen in flemish other than they both mean the same thing (mountain)?

Maybe I am referring to the Mascot then, which may double in american sports with the nickname. Isn't ManU the Red Devils? Like West Brom being the Baggies and Arsenal being the Gunners, or Real Madrid being the Galacticos.

I think they are all still nicknames. ManU is the red devils 'cuz they wear red, Arsenal are the gunners 'cuz they have a cannon on their crest and Real Madrid Los Galacticos 'cuz of all the super stars that they have or used to have on the team. I have heard people refer to teams from SLC as the Mormons since everyone knows that Utah is known for being the center of the LDS Church. The hockey team even played that angle up one year when they played against Las Vegas in a playoff series as the City of the Saints (goalie with a halo over his head) against the City of Sin (goalie with horns coming out of his head).

Mormons as a nickname sucks. I say that as Mormon.

"The Sinners" on the other hand I dig.

I have been racking my tiny little brain to come up with a nickname that is catchy, quirky and fits the team and the culture that they play in.

The best one so far is:

    The Sundays

Easy to say, kinda rolls of the tongue and is kinda quirky.

Real Salt Lake's nickname is RSL.

Not my choice, but it is what it is.
