Should we play the Gold Cup's competition every two years or every four years? We know that Gold Cup is qualifying for Confederations' Cup once in two. Gold Cup 2009 is not qualifying for this but Gold Cup 2011 will be. Personnaly, it doesn't bother me that Gold Cup plays every two years because it helps to see other players who aren't not often in their national teams. Gold Cup 2009 was not qualifying for Confederations' Cup but we saw revelations like mexican's player Miguel Sabah, US players Stuart Holden, Clarence Goodson... Like the african nations' cup, let's CONCACAF Gold Cup plays every two years!
I think it needs to be held every two years so that someone besides Mexico and the USA actually have a chance to win it. If it's held every 4 years then Mexico and USA take their A squad everytime and meet in the final. The USA couldn't take Landon Donovan away from LA for almost the entire season and we have some European players who are in season right now too. This resulted in a B/C squad playing for the USA in the Gold Cup and made it easier for Mexico to win. They didn't exactly have their best 11 their either and Costa Rica almost beat them because of that. Had the confederations cup been on the line then Mexico would have probably walked all over them.
I think that host rotation would be a lot better for that. Honduras should be favorites to win it if hosted there.
its pretty dumb to have this tournament every 2 years. one of them means something and the other doesnt. whats the point? im for having it every 4 years
With what you've said in the above statement,it makes more sense to play this competition every 4 years instead of 2,especially if this is being staged on and on and on by the US.And tell me what's the point of staging this tournament when nothing is at stake?Well there is no point so we shouldn't play it at all unless you're interested in watching a festival of B teams playing each other on field turf in half empty stadiums with a poor atmosphere. You say that it helps to see other players who are not often in their national teams. Now I say this to you:The reason why ''players who are not often in their national teams'' are not often seen in their national teams,it's because they are not good enough and there are players ahead of them available. If you want this tourney(along with the region) to get some recognition and gain some value, the best players from each team participating are needed.Players and FAs need to care, and if they do,we might follow aswell.
I hope someone brings it to the attention about hosting the Gold Cup every four years to Warner who's the new reincarnation of Papa Doc. You're right Soccerfever but unfortunately the Federation members will continue to follow along with their beloved dictator.
Maybe so, but it wouldn't hurt the tournament if Mexico, or the USA returned from the Confederations Cup and took a B squad to another country. Someone else might actually win then.
Like I've said in other threads, the playing it every 2 years is NOT the problem. the problem is we have a joke of a confederation that won't do things properly. The African Cup, like our Gold Cup, is played every 2 years. Teams want to win every time. Every single time. Confederations Cup years don't mean more. That's just icing on the cake. Their confederation is one that is seriously run, unlike ours. The next Gold Cup is in 2011. We have no idea where it is going to be. But we know where the next 3 African Cups are: 2010 Angola 2012 Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2014 Libya I like having it every two years. And I think it's a great idea. I hate the single-nation policy and fake draws. “We’re excited at having created these groups. They are well balanced and will provide very interesting matches,” CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer said. “Given the variety of teams and the cities we’re going to, it offers something for everyone.” “We’ve been successful in the past creating entertaining match-ups and I think this year will continue that tradition,” Blazer said. That doesn't sound like we had an organized draw, with you know pots and such. If the people at the top don't take it seriously, who can?
As MRschizoid21 says, we know where the 3 african cups will take place. And we also know this competition in Africa plays every 2 years. African teams take the competition seriously. So why don't we have the same state of mind? But i would make two exceptions to Panama and Jamaica which sent their best players. CONCACAF should organize better than that! For example, Gold Cup 2011 will take place in Canada, Gold Cup 2013 in Mexico, Gold Cup 2015 in Panama. You see! Gold Cup takes place every 2 years in different countries.
it should be known TODAY what country(ies) are hosting the next Gold Cup, so that they can start preparing.. it's very foolish that CONCACAF has not assigned the country(ies) yet .. 2 years goes by pretty fast..
I'm pretty sure that's because they've already decided it's the US so there's no need to give two years to prepare. Heck, Mexico probably wouldn't need that long either.
That's probably correct, they already by default know it's going to be in the US. And that's also the problem. Nobody else is willing to host it. There's no 'vote' to have it in the US. It's just that nobody really cares to make a bid for it, as far as I know. I'm willing to bet the US doesn't ask to have it all the time either, it's just assumed it will be there since nobody else will stand up and request to host it. That should give a huge clue to CONCACAF that the tournament urgently needs a facelift.
The problem is that CONCACAF is made up of a lot of small islands and some small central American nations. Then there is Mexico, USA, and Canada who actually have facilities to host a tournament. Out of those 3 places the USA is the only nation that has a large population of Americans and Mexicans to sell tickets to.
That's not the problem, that's CONCACAF's (Jack Warner's) shitty easy way out of actually trying to create a decent tournament for the region.
Don't forget that the Caribbean's cup there since 1978 so i don't see why we would remove it! This cup in the Caribbean must continue to exist. I'm a guadeloupean and i would like to see my country be Caribbean's champion!
they both mean being champion. it shouldn't matter if there is confederations cup or not. its about winning it.
one thing i did not like was the amount of cities this gold cup had. the groups were rotated across the country. i understand they wanted more fans but its too musch on the players. i would understand this in a european country because the countries are so small but the USA is ridicoulisly huge.
Needs to be every 4 years. And every team needs to bring their A squad. So the next is 2011, than 2015 and 2019 and so forth. The ANC might have theirs every 4 years, okay but Euro and AFC every 4 years. That gives it more merit and legacy. We have to wait those 4 years but I bet it'll be worth it. Plenty of time to let the media blow some steam and PR into it. Try having the 2015 in Canada or Mexico or Costa Rica. Make hosting the tournament something GRAND.
i agree but why not have it in even years? Because in odd years you could run into trouble where teams will send their B team because World Cup qualifying (what happened this past year). And I agree the cup needs to be totally re-branded and made into a big event. I would even drop the name Gold Cup. What do people in USA and the UK think when they hear gold cup? they don't think of soccer. They think of horse racing.
This is an example of what I would like to see happen. 2010- World Cup 2011- Copa America (2 invitees=Mexico and USA...usually) 2012- Gold Cup 2013- Confed Cup As a US fan I would like it if we focused more on the Copa America. This is a great tournament and the last time we were invited we threw out a B squad. We need to make it more meaningful and important whenever we go to South America. The Gold Cup is also an important tournament to me because we usually play Mexico in the final and needless to say, I hate Mexico. The finals are always fun to watch. However, having the Gold Cup every 2 years takes out some of the luster from the Cup. If it was every 4 years, it would be much more meaningful. There would always be something to play for because the winner would go to the Confed Cup. The winner of 2009, Mexico, didn't get anything.
Yeah, that's a great plan and everything but how is it beneficial to the other 95% of CONCACAF that's not the US and Mexico? Btw, that's also the other 95% of the votes. For nearly every team in CONCACAF, do you know what that proposal would look like? 2010- 2011- 2012- Gold Cup 2013- Wishful thinking on your part, but that's just not going to happen. And I'm not even going to get into the Copa America B squad thing. There were several reasons that that happened at the time. You were a poster here then I see, so you probably ignored them then so there's no point in pointing them out to you now.
I don't spend my entire life on these boards. I check on them here and there... For the other countries in CONCACAF they always play for something in the summer. Whether it be for qualifying for the Gold Cup or for the World Cup, they would play in the summer of 2011 and 2013 for these competitions. UEFA has a similar format where they only have the Euros and the World Cup and qualifying in between.
"Because that's the way UEFA does it" is not a valid argument. How many developing soccer nations are there in UEFA? How many in CONCACAF? Is UEFA domninated by a handful of programs from countries that have hundreds of times the population of most of the other nations? PS - I don't spend my entire life here either, not that it matters.
