2010 recruit Maya Hayes comes in as a sub and scores twice on assists from Nairn in 4 - 1 victory over England for U - 20's. Hayes is gonna be good. McCarty and Leroux also score one each v England and each get 1 again in 2 - 2 tie with Germany. http://www.ussoccer.com/teams/youth/u-20wnt/index.jsp.html

Rachel Lamarre scored in Canada's 2-1 loss to the U.S. U-20s. "Lamarre's goal three minutes later was a thing of beauty. With high pressure at the centre line, she won the ball and beat three defenders en route to the goal. Her goal evened the score 1-1." http://www.canadasoccer.com/tourney/FIFA_U20WWC/game_profile.asp?gameId=1762
Do you have reason to think they won't? I think Erica is building something special at PSU. However, look at what Paula is doing at UW. Could be interesting in the future. I watched the latest U.S. vs Canada friendly, a hard fought, well played 1-0 U.S. victory, and it seems that most of the Canadian team has roots in the NCAA. Yes, I know, a rambling, unfocused post.
Lady Lions @ USYSA Nationals Update Good early showing by Lady Lions @ USYSA Nationals in MA today: PSU soph GK Krissy Tribbett's Colorado Rush defeated PA's FC Delco Fury 1-0 in U19G opening day play, while incoming freshman Madlyn Evans scored twice in U18G FC Bucks (PA) 3-1 win over Pleasanton Rage of N.Cal. Keep it up, ladies!
Re: Lady Lions @ USYSA Nationals Update I am getting excited about the added potential from new players on the offensive side. When you look at those enrolled early and those that will be incoming freshman, there is a lot of potential fire power. Look at Rachel Lamarre from Canada, Christine Nairn, Maddy Evans, Tani Costa. Who am I missing on the offensive side?
Some good results from current and future Lions in the US Youth Soccer National Championships this weekend. At U18 Girls - Madlyn Evans scored the game winner for her FC Bucks team to win the championship and also was awarded the Golden Boot for her age group. At U19 Girls - Kristin Tribbett was given the Golden Glove award for her championship team the Colorado Nike Rush.
Christine Nairn scored the only goal for the US Womens Senior National Team 1-0 win over Canada. She will be fun to watch this fall in a Lions uniform. Article below http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_15302661.html
I live in Colorado and am familiar with the Rush club program. They have produced some very good collegiate soccer players. I'm sure Kristy fits that mold. What may be a stupid question, and shows my lack of knowledge of the game, but why did the Rush match go to a second OT period when they were leading 3-1 after the first. Isn't it sudden death?
Edit: Oops, you meant Alexa Thompson and not Emma Thomson. Danielle Toney is back for another year. Emma (Thomson) improved as the season progressed. She had the ability to penetrate deep into the opponents defense. She just didn't seem to be able to finish; however, she now seems to have a few offensive weapons available to her. Turbo11 - have you seen Molinda and Thompson play? On another note. I see in cfg2004's spreadsheet that UCLA already has 3 verbals from players with U.S. National Team experience for 2011. Also, the 2012 roster ( in his? spreadsheet) is loaded with PA players with NT experience.
Sudden death is a relatively new phenomenon for soccer. I don't know how long the NCAA has been using it. Traditionally, if a game was tied at the end of regulation time, the teams played two full 15-minute overtimes. Among other things, this balanced out factors such as weather -- for example, the wind blowing in one team's face. If the two overtimes expired, the game was over. As recently as 1999, NCAA Tournament games went first to two 15-minute overtimes and if still tied to two 5 minute overtimes and only then to shootouts. In 1999, Portland (with only 14 players healthy enough to play) went to the fourth overtime against North Carolina (with its usual hordes). Portland lost when North Carolina scored in the 129th minute. To this day, Portland's performance was the most inspiring sports performance I've ever seen, and even the North Carolina fans were amazed. I think the shift to sudden death was mostly a health and safety issue. A high number of injuries occurred in the overtime periods and also a high number of cards were issued in overtimes as players got tired and frustrated. The Division I Men's and Women's Soccer Committees recommended sudden death as a way to address the problem.
Even with their hordes, Dorrance cited fatigue from that semi as a good part of the reason his team lost in the finals. Shootouts aren't ideal, but you have to realize these are kids. Their health and safety comes first. I think that Youth Soccer and the NCAA are slowly coming to grips with that, but they aren't all there yet.
Nice summary of Tribbet's and Evans' accomplishments on the Penn State site. http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/w-soccer/psu-w-soccer-body-main.html
By the way, Penn State fans, I should say that I'm a native Pennsylvanian, from Philly long ago. So, I'm a little partial to Penn State so long as they're not playing the Portland Pilots. I think you're going to have a great team this year, definitely a College Cup contender. The second best college game I've seen (after the Portland-UNC game I mentioned in my previous post) was the Portland-PSU game in the 2005 College Cup semis. Clearly a screw-up by the NCAA in having those two teams meet in the semis, as they clearly were the top two teams in the tournament -- by far! I hope to see you all in College Station!
cpthomas: I am a Pennsylvanian and Penn State grad. Now I live in Vancouver, WA and am a "die hard" Portland Pilots fan when I cannot see my Nittany Lions (very seldom). I really enjoy watching the Pilots play as they have had great coaches and well organized teams. I was hoping to see the Lions play a return match here this fall, but maybe next year.
Yes! Alexa Thompson, she was injuried last spring. I did'nt see her and Molinda play so far. But report says they are good players. For what it is worth top 50 in TopDrawer.
August 15th, this Saturday, an exhibition match against Pitt. No matter the sport or the circumstances - i.e., exhibition, regular season, etc. - a match against Pitt is always important.
It is so cool that Christine Nairn was nominated as a freshman to the Hermann Trophy Watch List. Alyssa Naeher and and Katie Schoepfer were also nominated, both deserving.
Penn State beats Pitt 2-1 in an exhibition. Christine Nairn does not start and doesn't appear to have taken the field. Pitt scored with 8: 21 left in match against PSU reserves - in truth it may have been Pitt's reserves also. This is a moral victory for the Panthers. I thought this could easily be 7, 8 - 0 PSU. As a PSU fan who remembers the PSU-Pitt rivalry, I want to see PSU pour it on anytime they face a Pitt team. I am sure that Erica has other agendas and, well wanting to win, doesn't care about the score. The real season starts in a week against Virginia. We will see how that goes. Last score I saw had Duke and Tennessee tied at 2 at 46+ in their match. Regular seson or exhibition?
