Potential USA Gold Cup Roster

So there's been plenty of talk about the roster for the qualifiers and Confederations Cup, but not an official thread dedicated to the potential Gold Cup Roster. Assuming it will be mostly MLS guys, plus a few fringe Euros, and maybe only 2-3 backups from the Confederations Cup squad, here's an early stab:

    Goalies: Guzan, Hahnemann, Cervi.
Guzan is the clear starter, but maybe Marcus gets a few games too. As Cervi is being signed to Celtic shortly, he could be a good third option.

Defenders: Marshall, Freeman, Goodson, Parkhurst, Gibbs, Simek, Orozco, Harrington.
Simek starts on the right, Marshall and Parkhurst in the center, and left is up for grabs (Freeman, Gibbs, Harrington). Bornstein and Pearce go to Confed Cup.

Midfielders: Feilhaber, Szetela, Zizzo, Holden, Rogers, Alejandro Bedoya, Jeremiah White, Rico Clark
I see Feilhaber being one of the only players to make both squads. He just needs games right now to get back to fitness. Adu could sneak onto this squad, but I think Bradley lets him return to Europe to get his club situation sorted out. Starting line-up would be a complete toss-up besides Feilhaber. I wouldn't bring Kljestan.

Strikers: Casey, Cooper, Marcus Tracy, Eddie Johnson
This is a very strong striker line-up, good test to see who emerges from the pack. Whoever makes the best of it will push for a spot on the World Cup squad in 2010.

Some small changes from my previous prediction:

    https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17724178&postcount=126

    Gold Cup
    GKs: Guzan, Robles, Pickens
DFs: Cherundolo, Parkhurst, Marshall, Hejduk, Simek, Goodson, Conrad, Orozco
MFs: White, Mastroeni, Holden, Rogers, Szetela, Cameron, Carroll, C. Clark
FWs: Cooper, E. Johnson, Casey, Tracy

    Here are my assumptions:
-Edu is out for the CC and is replaced by R. Clark.
-Cherundolo, as he stated previously as his target, is recovered to start in the Gold Cup
-Mastroeni and Hejduk are already well tested and aren't needed at the CC. Mastroeni is replaced by Feilhaber and Hejduk is the Gold Cup captain
-Guzan does not go to CC, but is the starter for the Gold Cup

This is my assumed CC roster:

    GKs: Howard, Hahnemann, Perkins
DFs: Wynne, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Spector, Califf, DeMerit, Pearce, Bornstein
MFs: Dempsey, Bradley, Torres, Donovan, Kljestan, R. Clark, Feilhaber, Beasley, Adu
    FWs: Altidore, Ching, Davies

Agreed with Guzan, but I think Hahnemann will be the CC backup and Robles will get a game or two at the Gold Cup.

Agree with Marshall and Parkhurst. Cherundolo is rumored to be back by the Gold Cup and is willing to play it. I think Hejduk starts on the left. Goodson and Orozco should also be on the roster for sure. Simek if he's healthy, while the final spot is a tossup.

Rogers and White should start on the wings. Central positions are a complete tossup however, depending on who goes where. My guess is Rico and Benny go to CC and Holden and Mastroeni start in the center.

    Agree 100% with these 4.

I don't think Guzan is going to go to the Gold Cup. Aston Villa start Europa League qualifiers the first week of August. The player has to have some offseason before starting training camp with his club.

I disagree, assuming that Brad Friedel will still be the #1 next season at Villa. No need to require the #2 at training camp as long as he's getting games.

I could see Tracy sitting out however since his club I am sure would prefer him to stay.

    Here is my roster:

    GK: Guzan, Robles, Hartman
DF: Vidal, Marshall, Whitbread, Cherundolo, Orozco, Simek, Gibbs, Pearce
MF: Adu, Kljestan, Clark, Diskerud, Alvarez, Szetela, Holden, Zizzo
    FW: White, Casey, Cooper, Tracy

    Explaining my selections:

In Goal, Guzan needs playing time and is possibly the only player who will apprear in both the CC and the GC. I went with Hartman as #3 because he's a reliable GK and there is a possibility that Guzan may be too rusty and that Robles may not be ready. I didn't want to play Perkins as #3 and have a situation where the Yanks are actually weak in goal.

The backline will reward Vidal and Whitbread for their overseas play. I included Simek and Marshall because I assume that Parkhurst and DeMerit will play in the CC. Cherundolo returns primarily because he will be fit to play. I know I have left off Hejduk, but we can look at Hejduk again late in the Hex after we have qualified, and besides, we know how Hejduk can play. Furthermore, this is Heath Pearce's last chance, and I left off Chad Marshall because we all know what he can do, and he will only get the call if there is an injury.

In the mid, I feel that Freddy Adu will get his real chance, and he basically will be captain. This will be Kljestan's last shot at greatness, if his form is still low, he's going to be off the team. Furthermore, Clark plays at DM, but if it turns out Edu is unable to make the CC, Clark goes to the CC while Edu plays at the Gold Cup. Rogers has not been playing as well as he should, so I have replaced him with Alvarez. Furthermore, I rate Diskerud higher than Cameron or Bedoya, and I give him a cap. If Diskerud turns down the invite, it certainly goes to Cameron.

Up top, It's the Cooper and Casey show. I put White in with the Forwards as I can see White play either up top or out wide, I want to see White play forward in at least one match because of his great speed. I put Tracy on over Johnson because we all know we have given Johnson a lot of chances--I prefer looking at EJ late in the Hex.

I really wanted to put Gaven on my roster, I think it would be better to look at Gaven after the GC and late in the Hex. I just felt like looking at Zizzo in the European offseason was better because Zizzo is still trying to win playing time at his club.

I think this thread is way premature. Wait for the CC roster first.

I also think Edu and Hejduk will both go to CC, ditto Mastroeni. We will bring the best 23 we have.

    CC:
    GK: Howard, Guzan, Hahnemann
D: Hejduk, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Beasley; Spector, Calliff, DeMerit, Pearce
M: Dempsey, Bradley, Mastroeni, Donovan; Kljestan, Edu, Torres, Adu
    F: Ching, Altidore, Davies, EJ

    Gold Cup:
    GK: Guzan, Robles, Keller
D: Cherundolo, Marshall, Parkhurst, Bornstein; Wynne, Goodson, Orozco, Luchaj(?)
M: White, Feilhaber, Clark, Rogers; Zizzo, Szetela, Holden, Convey
    F: Cooper, Casey, Tracy, Rolfe

    Alternates:
    GK: Perkins, Pickens
    D: Simek, Freeman, Whitbread, Vidal
M: J. Johnson, C. Clark, Gaven, Wallace, Arnaud
    F: Pontius, Findley

Gibbs is washed up. He has yet to play a good game for Colorado in 2 seasons. There is no need for his name to ever be heard again.. We, Rapids fans, get it hopefully Bradley and all of BS will get it soon!!!

Now that the Confederation Cup roster is set, we may have a better idea at who will be on the Gold Cup roster and who will not. Personally, I don't think Bob will keep MLS players for two tournaments in a row. Also, I'm sure many of the European clubs will want their players back for pre-season.

    Confed Cup Roster:
GOALKEEPERS- Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Luis Robles

DEFENDERS- Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Jonathan Spector, Jonathan Bornstein, Marvell Wynne, Jay DeMerit, Danny Califf, Heath Pearce

MIDFIELDERS-Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Sacha Kljestan, Jose Francisco Torres, Benny Feilhaber, Ricardo Clark, DaMarcus Beasley, Freddy Adu

FORWARDS- Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore, Conor Casey, Charlie Davies

    MLS players are in bold.

So, now that we know the Confed Cup roster, what's everyone's guess now?

OK, we are assuming Ives has it right. And I can't believe the roster is final until after the game (someone could get hurt, or suck really bad).

OK. My big question is do Hejduk, Ching, and Mastroeni play, or not? Do MLS players like Wynne, Bornstein, Clark, and Kljestan double dip. I say Yes and No, respectively.

    GK: Guzan, Hahnemann, Pickens.
D: Cherundolo, Marshall, Orozco, Pearce; Simek, Parkhurst, Cameron, Hejduk
M: White, Mastroeni, Holden, Rogers; Zizzo, Szetela, Gaven, C. Clark.
    F: Ching, Cooper, EJ, Rolfe

    Just missed:
GK: Cannon (irrational BB hate), Keller (not a 2010 option)
D: Conrad (BB irriational hate), Goodson,
M: Thorrington, Pontius, J. Johnson, Convey, Beckermann, Corrales, Simms, Carroll, Arnaud
    F: Findley, Wolff, Tracy, Buddle

Pearce doubles up as he is looking for a job.

as previously mentioned, no MLS players will be pulling double duty this summer. If you see em on the Confed list then theyre not going to the Gold Cup. Pablo as i assumed earlier would be one of the vets we bring to the Gold Cup. But due to injuries prior to the CC, guys like Ching and Hejduk if healthy should be there too.

    GK: Guzan, Hahnemann/Robles

D: Marshall, Parkhurst, Hejduk, Simek, Orozco, Whitbread, Vidal, E Castillo (for the win :D)

M: Mastroeni, Holden, Szetela, Torres, Rogers, Feilhaber, White, Adu

    F: Ching, Cooper, Davies, Tracy

    ---------------------Guzan-----------------------

    --------------Marshall----Parkhurst----------------
    Cherundolo-------------------------E Castillo

    ---------------------Szetela----------------------
    White----------------Torres----------------Rogers

    ----------------Ching---------Davies--------------

I predict a few YA players will be pulling double duty up to and including Adu, Feilhaber, Spector, Torres, and Davies.

-Adu hasnt played in almost 40 years, he'll have fresh legs even if he plays full 90s from here on out.
-Feilhaber is Denmark based, has nothing else to do, and finally can bring us back one of the more pleasant experiences of GC 2007
-Torres, sure why not, nothin else to do.
-Davies is being baited towards Sochaux

-Spector is where I am torn. Lucas Neil just left West Ham and a lovely spot at right back has just opened up for him. Combined with Dolo AND Dude should be there he might not be there. Then again, we do need him at left back....

Another big thing is locking Edgar Castillo up at left back, on the principle of epic suck we already have this needs to happen. We've been forgiven of a horrible mistake, we need to remedy that situation now.

And finally I hope we see Tracy over EJ for the final spot because i still have PTSD over what i saw from him in summer of 2007.

    GK: Guzan, Robles, & Pickens
D: Cameron, DeMerit, Califf, Bornstein, Marshall, Parkhurst, Wynne, Hejduk
M: Adu, Holden, White, Feilhaber, Clark, Edu, Torres, Kljestan
F: Davies, Ching, Cooper, E. Johnson

    Starting 11:
    G Guzan
    LB Bornstein
    CD Califf
    CD DeMerit
    RB Hejduk
    LM White
    CM Edu
    CM Feilhaber

    ST Davies

    Bench:
    G Robles
    M Torres
    M Adu
    D Parkhurst
    D Marshall
    F Johnson
    M Clark

I would want to see Cameron get in some games though. I also think if Kljestan, Wynne, Califf, or DeMerit go back to their clubs that we should call in Dickerud and cap him in the match against Grenada.

I left off Whitbread. Either Cameron or Orozco sits for Zak.

And given BB's comments about finding club playing time, I doubt anyone with an unsettled club situation (Adu) will miss any training time for this one. And I doubt anyone save Guzan will pull double duty, save maybe Pearce if he is still unsigned.

If Pearce needs the time to practice with a new club, then that is the priority and Orozco/Cameron are back in.

    My Gold Cup roster:

GK- Guzan, Hahnemann & Seitz (considering he's our future #1 & sitting behind Rimando in RSL, wouldn't be a bad idea IMO to take him, if only for the experience).

D- Parkhurst, Marshall, Conrad, Orozco, Namoff, Russell, & Hejduk (if healthy)

M- Davis, Holden, Mastroeni, Beckerman, Arnaud, Alvarez, Feilhaber & White

F- Cooper, Davies, Rolfe, Hill & Ching (if healthy)

I want to see Namoff & Russell (RSL) get a call...they've had solid seasons. I know it might not be possible to get BOTH Davis & Holden...both are deserving...but I'll include them. If Bradley doesn't, at least, TRY to get them both, he's CRAZY!! If we only get one of them, I'd go with Kjlestan/Rogers...though, neither one is having a good season!!

Think Beckerman would be a good addition & would love to see Alvarez get a call-up...he's earned it IMO!! Interested in seeing what White can bring to the table!!

I'd like to see Kamani Hill get another call & see if he can contribute!! NOOO to EJ...he's had enough opportunities!! I thought about Wolff...he's doing well at KC...but would rather see what Rolfe can do!!

I only see Feilhaber & Davies playing in both the Confed Cup & Gold Cup!! I just don't see another of the others...Beasley & Freddy need to get their club situations worked out and the rest need rest before another European season starts!!

My starting XI, in a 3-5-2:

    ------------------------Guzan-------------------
    Hejduk--------------Parkhurst---------Namoff
    -----------Beckerman-------Mastroeni--------
    --Alvarez------------Feilhaber--------Davis--
    --------------Davies------------Ching---------

    A few things.

    1. Has Castillo even given a hint that he would switch nations and come over to the US? Wouldn't Mexico call him to the Gold Cup anyway if they though we were going to try to steal him? If he isn't good enough to play for Mexico, do we really need hiim?

    2. Jemal Johnson is getting called up.

    3. Beasely said he might play in the Gold Cup, and he and Bob had talked about it. That leads me to believe that depending on how things go in SA and who gets to play and how they play, then Bob will make a decision on who the Gold Cup squad is going to be. He wants to get all of his ducks in a row for Azteca, so he might not be as experimental with lineups in the GC after all.

    4. They still want to win the GC, and not just throw it away, so they need some veterans.

    Here are the possibles:

Goalies: Guzan and two more, who they are does not really matter, they are not going to play any significant time.

    Possible Defenders:
RB Cherundolo (is he ready), Simek (can he play), Lichaj, Spector might still get called into this one. Hejduk, maybe, but we already know what he can do.

Central: Boca and Gooch (I don't think so unless the Confed is a disaster), Demerit and Califf (one of them will be there to get the experience and caps), Whitbread (defenitely), Parkhurst (defenitely), Orozco (maybe),

LB: Pearce (a lock, he needs the minutes and exposure), who else we got? Bornstein will need to go home.

    Midfield:

Cnetral/Defensive: Bradley gets the rest, Torres ( a lock, he needs more games), Feilhaber (I think he goes well, to continue to develop), This is where it gets interesting, because Clark will need to head to Houston. Edu is hurt, and Klesjtan will also be back to Chivas. Who can play here? Szetla is probably the best option here. Simms, Larentowicz, and Sam Cronin might also be possbilities. I don't think we will see Mastroeni.

Attacking: Donovan and Dempsey need the rest. Beasely needs the games, so I think he is going, plus cover for LB. Adu is also a lock, he needs experience and he excels in a lot of these types of games. Probables: Holden (he was close back in January), Jemal Johnson, Brad Davis (we need a left sided player), Colin Clark (left sided), Marco Vidal (an interesting player), Zizzo (I don't think so), White (Bradley hasn't shown an inclination toward him)

Forwards: Casey goes home, I think he takes Altidore (another guy who needs games), Cooper (for sure), Ching (maybe), Davies (needs the games, is a lock), and Marcus Tracey is in the mix also.

    Here is my final roster:

    Goalies: Guzan, Robles, Perkins

Defense: Spector, Simek, Demerit, Whitbread, Parkhurst, Orozco, Pearce

Midfield: Adu, Beasley, Torres, Feilhaber, Szetela, Holden, Johnson, Davis, Vidal

    Forwards: Altidore, Davies, Cooper, Tracey

I have to make a few adjustments to my earlier roster. Also, Jones and Castillo can't play in the GC even if they decide to switch since the rule changes to go into effect until August 2nd

    GK: Guzan, Robles
D: Simek, Parkhurst, Whitbread, Cherundolo, Goodson, Freeman, Marshall, Orozco
M: Gaven, Diskerud, Holden, Szetela, White, Mastroeni, Rogers, Convey
    F: Ching, Cooper, Rolfe, Tracy

    In this lineup you have:
    1) First teamers and former first teamers in Cherundolo, Mastroeni, Ching, and Convey

    2) Players that have received caps in the past but failed to break through: Marshall, Gaven, Rolfe, Parkhurst, Goodson, Orozco

    3) Uncapped (or very infrequently capped) guys who maybe can help in the present: Rogers, Holden, Whitbread, White, Freeman

    4) Future talent mostly for the 2014 cycle: Diskerud, Szetela, Tracy

This lineup serves these multiple purposes but gives us a chance to compete as well.

I really think Geoff Cameron needs to be not only on the roster but given a real look. The guy keeps getting better and better.

Agreed. He has the speed that we seem to lack in our center back pool and is technically solid. All he needs is experience and he can get that in a less-pressure packed setting in the Gold Cup.

Holden was also spectacular last night. I'd expect them both to be in the squad.
