HEY EVERYONE someone told me that Barca's 3rd team to play on the west coast was going to be against PUMAS. They said they heard it on piolin por la manana radio...couldnt find anything on the internet though
I know they will play the Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on August 3rd. I am not sure about the Bay Area though........
http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2009/06/barcelona-will-play-third-us-game-in.html Rumor has it that Barca will play in Oakland. I really doubt this will be a bonus game game for us season ticket holders............ but one can hope.
Considering there aren't more than 2-3k season ticket holders, I'm sure the club could fit the bill......I mean in a 50l stadium?
this rumor post has them playing in oakland against MLS chivas. http://www.barcaloco.com/oakland-to-be-third-stop-in-tour/ That would be sweet...and suggestive that earthquakes werent accommodating enough. MLS really needs to get owners who are aware of the international game, and truly desirous of attempt to be part of it.
Yes, and even though ChivasUSA is playing better than the Quakes it would be a huge slap in the face to bring another MLS team into our area to play Barcelona.
well at least we have a glimmer of hope that Barcelona is coming to the Bay Area! Please update us once it is confirmed and where we can get hold of tickets !
funny how barcelona is playing two MLS teams (galaxy & sounders), but not planning on playing the quakes. As for Barcelona vs chivas selling more tickets then barcelona vs quakes, how is that possible? will the coliseum be expanded to 100k? Who doesnt think Barca was going to sell out anyway...even if they were set to play the bay area gold pride?
This from the official Barcelona website, English version, yesterday... With the full squad assembled, Barca will fly over the Atlantic on Wednesday July 29th to start their American Tour, repeating the experience of 2006 and 2008.. The team are due to play games in Los Angeles on August 1st and Seattle on 5th before returning home on 9th. On the other hand, some football package promoters are saying it's Barca in Oakland on August 8th. Hmmm.
http://www.fcbarcelona.com/web/english/noticies/club/temporada08-09/06/n090610105468.html Another confirmation that Barca is stopping at Oakland for the US westcoast tour is from "El Presidente" himself. Click link above ^
Nice! Be sure to look at the video interview since the article doesnt mention oakland, but el prez of barca does.
I can't wait. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sounders/2009320211_sounders10.html?syndication=rss
It's kind of sad. A missed opportunity for Earthquakes exposure to the Eurosnobs of the bayarea. I'd really like to see how the financials of this all work out. Do the Earthquakes get any revenue for being the "hoist" of this event?
On August 6 the Oakland Coliseum is in the baseball config for a A's v Rangers game. On August 13 it's in the football config for the Raiders v Cowboys game. Hopefully on August 8th they can have the stadium in the football config.
As you can see, the game is still "unannounced" so who really knows. I wouldn't put it past Chivas USA to bring the game in since FCB is already playing in LA. Just because it's in the Oakland Coliseum doesn't mean the Quakes/A's are involved... it IS a public facility available for rent. Nonetheless, it will be good to see Barca again. Saw them vs. Guadalajara in that OTHER Coliseum a couple years ago.
Quakes arent the "host" as there shouldnt be any "territorial" rights in MLS. Wolff doesnt own Oakland Coliseum either. Barca may have seen the 10k attendance of SJ and deduced accurately that it was a team that had generated only minimal community interest - unlike the high 20k attendance of LA & Sea. However, if SJ had gotten an invite from Barca and had then given it to Chivas then I'd say I hope SJ gets a little paycheck.
Actually there are however. NorCal is the Quakes territory, so I doubt Chivas USA could play Barca in Oakland. However the real Chivas could without any issue since they're not an MLS team.
