Whats to say? Its pretty much the Quakes MO this season, give up stupid, stupid goals, put yourself in a hole, fail to respond. The first goal was total lack of discipline on the set piece, the second a lack of concentration and breakdown to start the half.

    Just predictable.

didn't see the game apart from the video of RJ's goal that was posted - thanks for that, since I was at work. Did manage to catch the 1st half of the CL final and 10 mins of the 2nd half in the private theatre on the giant projection HD screen though.

But anyways - it does sound like things are improving. RJ *MUST* start at forward. He is the only consistent scorer this season. Quincy will improve as he plays more games and learns the league and how to play up to MLS level (feels so ironic typing that).

a 2-1 road loss isn't such a bad thing. The defence still needs to be sorted out obviously. I don't think Kelly Gray is the answer, but Leitch and Pitchkolan weren't playing so that might not be so bad.

I'm much more optimistic about the RSL game than I was previously.

During our recent run of road disasters Gray has been just awful.

He's left marking space too often, gets beat on his slide tackles, and when he sits on the ball trying to not just "hoof it up" (which everyone complains about) he gets pickpocketed leading to dangerous scoring chances.

The 2nd goal was Denton's fault (I am not a Denton hater, he played pretty well). Garcia was ahead of him and Denton tried to head him the ball instead of just letting it go out of bounds. The pass went to Columbus, and now both left backs are out of the play. Elliott was too slow recovering so Hernandez and Gray we left trying to cover a wall of 3 Crew breaking into the box. Hernandez probably made a mistake trying to stop the bad angle ball-carrier instead of letting Cannon shut him down, because Gray was not able to slide to the middle attacker leaving him with an easy goal.

Q and RJ were highly effective holding up direct balls, especially in the first half. Q will continue to get major minutes if he keeps this up.

I would say we have a decent chance of a result against RSL.

No, HE'S high! At least he plays like it 3/4 of the time... ("he" being Gray)

However, if you equate discussion of a referee's shortcomings with blaming them for a loss, you are a loser with poor reading comprehension.

I thought it was Hernandez playinf the attacker on-side on Col's 1st goal.
My apologies to Hernadez if I was mistaken but watching at 400K is pretty bad resolution.

There were actually two players. The obvious one coming off the line so late looked like Quincy, but, there was another player who was near the Columbus player who made the far post run. Even if Quincy? had not been in the picture we still had played the Crew onside.

just another example of bad TEAM defense, lack of team chemistry, lack of leadership on defense, etc etc

Our clearances have been poor but there is no excuse for not moving the team forward when the ball is cleared. I would like to see Garcia as the last defender in those situations. why not? he is the veteran and highest paid defender on the roster. If FY is _not_ communicating this the the other players then it is another example fo FY being too soft on the players.

Your team played a good game and were very dangerous at times. Especially in the first half. My guess is you are due to get on a win streak shortly.

The reffing did suck but I dont think its cost anyone the game.

Good luck on your next one. You have a good group.

Disagree John. I'm a Crew fan too. This was the first time I've seen SJ this year and I was surprised how bad they looked. Field was slippery the second half so that might have been part of it, but Columbus players were generally quicker, forcing lots of grabbing by SJ. Ref let too much go IMO. Even the Crew's depleted lineup was better than SJ's.

Beside Huckerby who else were you missing? I think Yallop is a quality coach and your problem is a lack of talented players. You've got 4 of our former players and Elliott is the only one who was decent for us. Glenn, Denton, and Leitch weren't very good in Cbus.

Thanks for the non-fan perspective. You are in pretty much in agreement with 99% of the Quakes fans on BS. We just don't have the talent. However, you will get a lot of disagreement on Yallop as a coach. His ability to gauge and bring in talent is being questioned at the moment.

My guess is we turn it around when Huckerby gets back, like last season, and again, finish sub-par because it'll be far too late. Glen might help, but meh.

i doubt it - towards the end of the season and at the beginning of this season, defences were aware of him and more than able to contain him. he only made a huge impact from when he first came in to just before the last 3-4 games.

he's a big loss but he is NOT going to carry the team this year like he did last year on that streak.

I don't think the Crew lineup was all that much more depleted than the Quakes. Quakes were missing 2-3 starters (Huckerby, Alvarez - though he did come in later he had a knock, and Leitch), and my impression was that it was about the same for Columbus.

That said, yeah, SJ hasn't really looked good all year. If you thought that was bad, you should have seen the previous two games. Most of the Quakes fans here actually feel reasonably good about yesterday's game because it was more competitive than the last few.

Leitch has been good for the Quakes this year, Glenn(sic), we'll see, and Denton has been kind of average overall. Elliott has been OK, but no spring chicken.

Actually, youll get a large disagreement among quake fans. Some put the issue solely on the roster, but some put the blame on the coaching staff for not getting the team organized and prepared.

Im in the latter camp, and I think this game showed exactly that. The crew werent terribly threatening on the Quake goal, but a very poor team reaction to a clearance on a set piece (failure to move up field) and a complete loss of concentration to start the second half gifted the Crew 2 goals. Those are mistakes of discipline and concentration, not talent level.

There are obviously places we could and should improve the roster, but the talent level isnt why we are at the foot of the table. This is a horribly prepared, mentally weak team.

I have to agree. The earthquakes on paper are a great team, I just think they need to play with a little more composure. They need to start knowing where their team mates are instead of looking for them through out the game. that might be a stretch the last part but what the hay.

We just don't have quality players to compete in MLS today. It is that simple. Besides Cannon and Hernandez, may be Convey too, I doubt if any other MLS coach would start any of our starting 11 last night. Most of our players have no pace and those who do have speed can't do anything. Salinas may become Messi someday but today he is absolutely useless. Quincy could not make a pass and he could only run into someone or slip. Corrales made a back pass to Cannon even when we were down a goal at the last moment of the game.

I don't blame it on the players. Their talent is only this much and they play with the limited talent they have. One example is Eric Denton. This is all he can do and he plays professionally every game. The problem is those who choose these sub-par players and put them on the field instead of some better players. The problem is JD and FY underestimating the current level of MLS and overestimating what these benchwarmers can do. Some may argue that FY does not have the quality players to use but you need to remember he is also the one, together with JD, who decides what players to keep or acquire. Last year they had the right strategy to build the expansion from the back and then added offensive power mid-season. This year, I don't see any plan except extending the preseason into the regualr season and keep trying unproven players and hoping for luck.

Yeah thanks! If you're going to allow fouling on headers, then it has to be equal for both teams.

    Tragically, you are correct.

Notice that I said more than once that I did not think that the officiating changed the game. I do think that he deflated our guys more than once either by calling a foul that stopped our momentum, or by not calling obvious fouls committed by the Crewless.

So has everyone else. TheJoe, Garcia, Corrales and Elliott espeically, Convey and Alvarez have had a few bright moments but a lot of non-involvement too, and Gray has sucked as you said.

It's not just a break down of one player or two. It's a team breakdown. It is lack of focus, it is expecting to lose before you step on the pitch. It shows a lack of preparation. It shows a lack of spine, playing like you expect your teammates to carry your share of the load.

Nope. You ROB lovers continue to overestimate his contributions to the club last year. He made some nice crosses to be sure, but many, many more that were way off target. He's almost as one footed at Arturo. We notice less because he plays on the right and he's right footed so he can make those crosses, but real players use both feet. And, he was gassed at the 70 minute mark in nearly every game. He wasn't worth what we were paying him. And we overpaid to be sure.

Put that aside for a moment. When JD and Frank signed Arturo, and they both said that they were excited to get him, that meant that they were cutting ROB. They signed a guy who played ROB's position because they wanted to replace ROB.

    QFT.

No. We sucked. Your guys sucked too. The Crewless spent way too much time and energy trying to work the ref and not enough time and energy trying to play the game. That said, your lot sucked less than our pathetic, uncoordinated, heartless effort.

We're missing Cochrane, and most of us think that's a good thing. Yallop picked this team, and most of them played better for him last year. The problems are these:

Corrales was a stud for us last season, this year, he sucks.

Garcia was very good for us at the start of last season. By the end of last season it was clear that he's past it. But Frank and JD kept him, rather than cutting him.

Lima was good for us last season, but he bailed on us.

Elliott and Convey have played in the middle trying to replace Lima and they both suck. Pitchkolan at d-mid was more energetic and a better tackler, but other than that, he sucked.

Alvarez playing right side mid means no crosses from there.

Our forwards are only slightly improved from last season, but they get no service.

In short, we really suck, and it's all Frank's fault. (No doubt with disabling assistance from JD and the players.)

    go quakes :(
