    Just what did Josh do?

I would like to know what caused the highest scorer in the league to get a hard red...

did he headbutt? did he insult the ref because the ref had been paid off in pesos? what happened?

it deserves its own thread because it is THAT big of a deal...

Yeah that was shocking ... the ref had a nightmare second half.

    Re: Wdjd?

    According to USA today:

"Wolff was ejected 4 minutes after that, in a flurry of cards sparked by Mariano Trujillo's hard foul on Wolff. The two exchanged words, and Wolff drew a straight red card for lowering his forehead into Trujillo's head."

    Highlights are up http://web.mlsnet.com/sights/.

About 2:50 in is a replay of what Wolff does.

I _guess_ you could call that a headbutt, but pretty weak to me. Stupid by Wolff, but what can you do.

The 1st yellow on Hirsig was absolutely wrong though.

    Re: Wdjd?

Ref let them play early in the game, and the game got too physical so he got card happy. I hate when that happens.

Ok, just watched the highlights. Can't argue with Wolff's red, that was just plan stupid on his part.

As for Hirsig. Unless the second yellow was for persistent infringement, there is no way that's a yellow card. Especially with what he hadn't called and hadn't given cards for earlier in the game.

    Re: Wdjd?

What I take issue with is Trujillo and Thomas getting in Wolff's face about going down easy. That kinda stuff is always going to instigate something and is tantamount to taunting, why not card it for unsporting behavior?

As for Hirsig, his first yellow was for that stupid double caution on the corner kick -- every other referee in the world warns both players and leaves it at that. And then the second card for persistent infringement? It was his first foul of the half!!!!! His only other fouls were in the first 15 minutes, a full 70 minutes earlier!!!!!

    Re: Wdjd?

If it was for a reckless tackle it seemed a bit on the harsh side ...

    Re: Wdjd?

Oh, I don't disagree but better harsh than completely absurd like a persistent infringement would have been. I guess.

According to the Internetz (football-lineups.com), ref Jasen Anno was working his fifth MLS game ever. He has awarded 4 red cards in his long and prosperous career.

I'm pretty sure he didn't remember giving Hirsig the first yellow when he showed him the second. Which is an absolute joke.

Completely altered the game. If the ref had called the foul where Josh was clipped, we would have had a free kick right outside the box. As usual, the officiating was awful and it changed the game. It's kind of strange that the most fouled player in the league gets two yellows, including one for persistent infringement.

it wasn't for PI, it was for a reckless challenge.

Without looking at the game thread first, this was my impression of what he had called, since the ref counted off fingers as if he had fouled many times. Reckless challenge is even a worse call, since it wasn't as bad as some others that weren't called at all.........like the clip on Josh.

Actually I'm sure he did because I just confirmed with my DVR that he showed them in very rapid succession. On the subject, that shows just a complete disregard of the game situation; you can't throw around cards like that when one team is already playing shorthanded. imo the proper thing at that stage if the ref sees an offense that the they feel might have been cardable, they should just give the come hither sign, explain what they saw and that the offender can consider themselves lucky they weren't carded again and ejected, and furthermore let him/her know that the next one will be a card for PI. The offender is duly informed and that should be that.

Having said that, there's one good thing about this. Specifically, I'm glad to see we're playing physical football instead of winning fair play awards.

I posted it a few places, but the PBP on MLSnet reports it for a reckless challenge. Talked with one of the Wizards people today and they confirmed that's what it was for.

I don't know. He went for the red card very quickly; he didn't go to the book then pull out the red when he noticed the prior yellow card.

On the other hand, he may have forgotten since no other ref would have given Hirsig the first yellow card.

And while there is a directive that calls for a straight red for simply lowering your head, I would hope a more experienced referee may have been willing to use common sense and see that Wolff was not trying to actually strike Trujillo. The problem is that with the federation watching, it is in the referee's best interest to issue the red card, which is unfortunate since it unnecessarily ruins the game.

Well... he certainly showed that red card in a hurry after flashing the yellow. If nothing else, he can read his own scribbles very quickly.

I think he knew it was his second yellow. He put up his fingers, but not for persistent infringement. He counted one, then two fingers for both yellow cards.

Hirsig only had 2 other fouls all game, the 7th and 14th minutes. He was given the card in the 83rd minute. I don't even remember his yellow.

So, if it was PI, you don't really call that with a 70 minute break between fouls.

It was just a stupid call by the ref. Hopefully, the idiot's done reffing soccer games.
