Chelsea-Liverpool 2nd leg, Apr. 14 -- not on ESPN2 in U.S.?

According to the schedule posted on the ESPN site, the 2nd leg of the Chelsea-Liverpool tie will not be shown on ESPN2 live on Tuesday, April 14. Instead, ESPN2 will have the Bayern Munich-Barcelona match at that time; and the Chelsea-Liverpool match will be shown only on ESPN Deportes, delayed, at 4:45pm EDT.

This is crazy. Can this be so??

It is not imaginable that the Chelsea-Liverpool match has been removed from ESPN2 on account of the scoreline of the first leg, because the scoreline in the first leg of the Bayern-Barca tie was even more lopsided!

So: what is going on here?

(Related issue -- it is truly baffling that ESPN refuse to utilise the SAP audio channel. They already have both English- and Spanish-language announcing teams covering each match; it would therefore be a simple matter to put the Spanish-language announcing on the SAP channel of ESPN2, and the English-language announcing on the SAP channel of ESPN Deportes, similar to the way Fox Sports Channel / Fox Sports en Español do it.)

Let me get this straight. So after showing matches involving EPL sides for 400 weeks in-a-row you're complaining that espn shows another game for a change?

That said, I doubt espn will not show Chelsea-Liverpool. The listings are probably wrong.

Holy crap! Barcelona will actually be on TV?

Both ties are really forgone conclusions.

Hello to my fellow New Yorker who is, like me, from Queens. (Furthermore, I am a Napolitano-descended fellow, so I am very happy that Napoli have been reborn and have returned to Serie A.)

You have indeed got that straight. Premiership teams are the top priority for broadcast within the U.S., as those are the teams which tend to arouse the most interest. You could change "the U.S." to the name of just about any other country outside Europe, and that sentence would still hold true. Just as soccer is "the world's game", the Premiership is "the world's league".

Of course, one can imagine exentuating circumstances: if, let's say, the Chelsea-Liverpool first leg had ended 4-0 and the Bayern-Barca match had been drawn, then the 2nd leg of that latter tie would undoubtedly be the more important game, and should clearly be prioritised over the match involving Premiership clubs.

But that scenario did not occur; both first legs were decided by big scores, and Barcelona enjoy an even greater lead going into the 2nd leg than do Chelsea. So, normal service ought to prevail.

It appears that those listings on the ESPN site were indeed wrong! I just checked Tuesday's schedule on my cable system (which I couldn't do before this morning, Saturday, because the system allows you to look a maximum of three days hence), and it lists the Chelsea-Liverpool match for live broadcast on Tuesday on ESPN2! Whew! Crisis averted.

Barcelona are in fact on TV most weekends, including this weekend: Sunday 1pm EDT (delayed), vs. Recreativo Huelva, on GOL-TV.

The Barca-Bayern tie certainly is. But, while I won't deny that I really like Chelsea's chances, I would say that anyone who saw Liverpool score three unanswered goals in the second half in Istanbul in 2005 cannot entirely dismiss the possibility of their doing something like that again, even at Stamford Bridge (against a Chelsea back line that will lack Terry).

    Oh noessss!!!

They don't make EPL games a priority once every 5 years and people complain. I have to say, it puts a huge smile in my face. :D

And if you don't get Gol-TV?

I guess you have to hope your team draws an English team in order to watch them. I don't think there has been an ESPN broadcast here that hasn't had a Premiership team yet this year.

Thank God. I hate when ESPN shows an england-england game instead of a much better game at the same time.

I rather watch Martinique play Dominica than watch a game with two british teams.

bozo Liverpool-Chelsea this was probably the best champions league tie in the past 20 years both games were epic just glad i live in London lol, but between the two games, Liverpool Chelsea and Barca-Bayern, the Liverpool-Chelsea was clearly the more intriguing everyone knew Bayern would not come back Liverpool had a chance to invoke Istanbul again and to their credit they very nearly did

it seems footy isnt popular in America because they dont even show the best games live, wtf is that? Cant you some how get itv sky or setanta on satellite?

Easy to say that after the match. It was an enjoyable match with a lot of drama, wasn't the best played match but that's nitpicking.

I'm glad Barca is matched up against an English team, now they'll be shown on TV.

Fortunately I get ESPN deportes which has been showing the Barca and Villareal games live. Now, I just wish I had learned my spanish better in high school.
