Why haven't you joined a Galaxy Supporter's Group? First off, let me say that I am not a member of any supporter's group. I pose this question becuase I have always wondered why others have not joined either the ACB, Riot Squad or Galaxians. I haven't joined due to the simple fact that I don't know anyone from either group and therefore I don't feel a connection to the groups. I know that our common connection is our love for the G's but they seem to be made up of a core group of friends with a very strong connection to each other that I am not a part of. So what's your reason? We all know that all the groups bring a great atmosphere to the HDC and if they got bigger the game-day experience would be better. But most of us here on Bigsoccer still haven't joined. Why?
Just so you know the ACB accepts ALL and we are not a core group of friends in fact when I joined with 15 other friends we had no idea what to expect since we didn't know anyone but it was open arms soooo come over and I assure everyone you will not!! feel out of place in this group as I do not speak for other SG's but our ANGEL CITY BRIGADE p.s. if you are a shy person join our forum and introduce yourself ANGELCITYBRIGADE.NET
I'd like to rephrase this. If you're an a*sshole, a racist or a hooligan then we won't accept you. Everything else MotorJuan says is true though, and if we're not your cup of tea then join the fine people at Lars or Galaxians. Between our three groups I'd say we cover just about all of the bases for soccer supporters.
My main reason for not joining an SG is that I don't really have season tickets and I can't really afford to go to each and every home game. I'd feel like I was too much of a neglect to the group if I were to officially join one...
Not everyone in our group has season tix and not all attend every game, some just make it out when they can, the only thing is they have to chant, sing, and jump louder to make up for the missed games haha
The LA Riot Squad has a secondary reason to exist. Yes, we are the largest group and we coined the phrase "we welcome all" back in 2002, but the truth is... we don't anymore. Now we spend all our time away from G's matches saving Los Angeles from zombies and to be honest, there are some people who just aren't cut out for the work of zombie-fighting. If you feel you can kill zombies AND cheer on the Galaxy, than LARS welcomes you with lot's of booze and knowledge. If not, we understand. Is this rhetoric? Maybe. I'm not sure. I've never had season tickets before, I spend most of the year out of LA, and am only home for the summers. I go to all the summer home games. Maybe when I graduate from college, if somehow I have enough disposable income for tickets, and live full time in LA I'll consider it. I think I'll try it at least once, but I'm not really sure it's for me. And this is the main reason. I consider myself a hardcore fan, I care deeply about the team, I live and die by the results, etc. But I'm not sure standing and singing/chanting the whole game is my idea of the best way to take in the game. This is not meant as a slight to any of the SGs, just my opinion: I feel like I wouldn't be as focused on the game. I like to really watch the game, see what's going on, who's playing where, focus on certain players, etc. I normally go to game with my younger brother and enjoy talking about the game, tactics, strategy (or lackthereof) etc. I feel like these two things would be somewhat inhibited by standing/chanting/singing a supporters group.
I am guessing your attending Newcastle or Durham university, dont be showing your man u colours up there, those geordie boys have no love for united, i can only say when i attend the games i stand with my friends in the ACB, I take in the match as well as joining in with the songs i have learnt.
Let me add that ACB members are cool as hell. I was taligating near them and alot of them came over and invited me and my friends to join them. Three different people came to ask me until I decided to go. I met a lot of new people in that one day and felt very welcomed. Definitely cool ass dudes in that group, even few hot chicks AS for RS, I stood with them for 4 years and never reallly had one person come up and introduce themselves to me or my friends to make us feel welcome (Just tommymack). I made a few friends there just by attending games but I think they've all been friends for so long and theres so many of them that they can care less about making new friends. I have nothing against them though and most of them are cool people, just too cliquish for me.
And we coined the phrase "organized" back in 08' toe-may-toes toe-mA-toes who cares as long as yah join one group that fits you, do it! you wont regret it or maybe you will.... see yah at the games!! damn!! no youtube video sorry
There's toh-MAY-tohz, there's toh-MAH-tohs, and then there's the third: TOH-muh-tohz. Always think outside of the box. LARS will never be like Chicago's Section 8, or Barra Brava from DC. And for all intents and purposes, not Red Patch Boys, Emerald City Supporters, and definitely nothing like Legion1908. Why? Because as much respect as I have for all these fine groups (except Legion), I'm not into spending 75% of a game jumping up and down. Yes, we like singing songs. We like doing a dance or two. And as a professional musician, I personally like to drum loudly... but there is a THIRD way of doing it in MLS and it's the "anti-supporters' group" concept. SKILLFUL MODERATION. I'm not knocking any other group nor their method of supporting their team, I'm just saying that the LARS way is just as intense, but with less jumping. It does include bike-jousting, though. Whenever I go to a game without the family I stand with LARS. I have never stood with ACB but the folks I have met from ACB are damn fine folks. But most games I am bringing the family which consists of an 8 and 10 y.o. my wife and a 7 mo. old baby. The wife and kids don't want to stand for the whole game. Sure they could hang out at the top of 137/138 while I am down in the trenches, but we bought the tickets as a family and I think I should stay with the family. Besides our tickets are in the 7th row which gives a great view of the field, and allows my kids (and me) to interact with players and coaches (my interaction with Preki made my seats gold for me read about it here) the kids have gotten a few game worn jerseys from the players. Sitting at the top of a corner would be a downgrade for the wife and kids. Besides, I would rather they weren't sitting in a standing section. Perhaps when the kiddos are a little older....
You know, I'm curious why BS changed the capitalization of my quote. Notice my "TOH-muh-tohs" in my original quote, and the "Toh-muh-tohs" in MotorJohn's quote (btw, MJ is a cool dude). I know it's meaningless, but as a former English major, the way the word is printed DOES have meaning and it's interesting that the website would auto-correct it later on someone else's quote. I don't know anyone in the Riot Squad either but this year that's where I got my season tickets. I have had no problem fitting in. The only way you can get to know people is to come over and participate. By the way everyone doesn't know everyone so you totally fly under the radar.
THIS is a very prescient quote. Look, it's hard to know everyone in a large group, and LARS is a VERY large group, because that's just math. There's a bunch of people even I don't know and I MAKE it my business to walk up to everyone I possibly can. 93% of them are really friendly and will offer you a beer. (7% of us truly are bastards. What can I say?) The key is to actually introduce YOURSELF. For instance, both Christ Tucker (Zero Cool- large black dude) and Eddie The Zombie joined right before last season. Technically, they're newbs... but you can see them at the center of everything doin' what they do. If you were to start standing with us now, you'd naturally assume they were some OG's from 2001. But that's how it goes with large groups. With the amazing growth of the ACB (and a damn fine group as well!), they'll find the same issues as well eventually. It's not a character issue, it's sheer numbers and social demography. Bottom line, get involved, PM people you recognize, and introduce yourself. No matter what, join either of the SG's and you'll have a great time. tommy mack la riot squad
Next week i could drive 10 minutes from my home and watch the biggest and reigning world club champions, Manure play at the Riverside, instead i will fly across the pond to stand with the ACB, i have never been in therapy, never been arrested and last time i looked my IQ. was up around 130, so why do it, because its fun, the gameday experience is like a party, no surly faces just people with a love of the Galaxy who are warm, welcoming, and a good laugh, karioke sessions break out, hell we even had this blasting out one game [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vMfCv5J0g8"]YouTube - Henry the Fifth Speech[/ame] I had never met any of these ACB people 18 months ago, and i have never had any american friends, now i have hundreds. ACB officially the friendliest group on the planet, at least in this Limey's view.
For the record, I had the honor of meeting Harry Callahan. He is an amazing dude and a true Galaxy fan through and through. Not only is the ACB lucky to have him, but all Galaxy fans as well. A tribute to you, Harry, and all the ACB. tm
Thank you very much Tommy, and i wish you well in promoting the growth of LARS and in your role as an ambassador for the Galaxy. Cos one day were gonna rock this stadium, we could do with just a little bit of help from the team.
I can't speak for other SG but i joined ACB last year at the begining and I joined because they were a new and fresh group. I knew no one and simply showed up. The rest is history. I enjoy singing, chanting, jumping, being a SG. I understand other posters who want to sit and watch, it doesn't make you any less of a hardcore fan. For those of you on the fence, i say find a group that you feel connected with and join in the fun. If you are a true fan of the Galaxy then you will always be welcomed by any SG in the stadium. it doesn't matter if you have ST or if you can make every game. Being a true supporter is not defined by those things. Is it great to be a STH and be at every game, yes, is it necessary, no. I invite any and all Galaxy fans that read this thread to join any SG (ACB welcomes all ) and see what being in a SG is all about. American fans are very disconnectted in our manner of watching sports, but the SG culture is something completely different that will make watching games an expierence. I recommend it for all. ACB's goal is to fill up all of section 121 and 122. We are well on our way of achieving that goal in only our second year with some really impressive growth. Come, join us and be a part of the show
