I often love seeing Mexes' passion for the giallorossi but this is ridiculous, especially with Fiorentina coming up. He's being made an example by the FIGC, but we pissed away any arguing power over an appeal after the Inter match.
That's why they're throwing the book at us. FIGC wants to keep their secrets to themselves. They should be punishing Inter, but they don't want another Calciopoli on their hands so they punish the victims. Great league we have, eh!!
It's all about ensuring Milan get's back into Europe, and Mexes joins them in my opinion. The whole season has been building towards it.
Roma have gone from one of the best defense in Serie A to almost conceding more goals against at the moment. Never realized how much the loss of Chivu would be to our defense. Considering he was injured often, he was still great. Also our away record has been brutal this year...4 wins 4 draws and 8 loses. Opposed to home at 10w 3 draws and 2 loses. But, if we lose Mexes as well, our defense will be obsolete.
What a crock of shit to say the least, but then again it really doesn't surprise me. To hand one of our most important players a 3 match ban at such a crucial point of the season is absolutely sickening, as I really don't think that what Mexes did was bad enough to actually merit such a punishment. I find it funny to see just how inconsistent the FIGC is whenever they're trying to "set examples" with their random idiotic suspensions.
I think the countless injury problems on our backline this year, combined with a few suspension have played a major factor in our defensive troubles. If you think about it, Roma on paper are rather solid in terms of defenders with names like Mexes, Panucci, Juan, Cicinho, Riise, Motta, Tonetto, and Cassetti. Needless to say, if everyone is actually HEALTHY (and that's a big IF) for more than just 3-4 games in a row, then our defensive situation would not be nowhere near as bad as it has been. Combine this with discipline problems such as Panucci's outburts in January and Mexes' constant bookings, then it's easy to see why we've been so sub-par defensively this season.
That's a good point, another interesting one is the link between the 4-2-3-1 and goals received. There was a clear change when the formation was changed to the diamond 4-3-1-2 and the goals received dropped significantly. Then back to the 4-2-3-1 and what happens?
haha good point, Adriano uppercuts a sampdoria defender in the ribs and nothing happens, Mexes shoves a player and is out 3 games. I just wonder what serie a would be like if it wasnt based off of inter!!!
I cant help but watch a Roma game now and worry about a goal being scored on each opposing opportunity. Its funny Ive never seen 2 goals scored in a games first 3 minutes but with the way our defense operates I almost expected both to go in. Now without Mexes for 3 are we going to have to watch matches expecting to let in 2 a game and play from there? Thank the lord we have Totti and DDR back. And Baptista looks better since I wrote him off against Aresenal. Would be nice to have Vucinic too, then at least we would have enough offense to win shootouts. I dont know how realistic CL is at this point. We lose against Florentina we are toast. If we continue to tank, I just hope we make UEFA Cup.
I thought exactly the same thing. When Lazio scored the first goal there was no doubt in my mind that the next shot was going to go in. I think there are a number of things going against Roma (not necessarily in this order). 1) There been no consistency in the back four due to injuries and suspensions. 2) Starting out so bad and having to play with our backs to the wall the entire season. 3) The pressure of some players knowing they might be sold if Roma doesn't qualify for CL, which is 99.9% a done deal. 4) The lack of game winning mentality this year. Roma is a pretty fragile team this season. They are mentally weak and an early goal or a couple of bad calls and they are out of the game. They complain about calls and don't get back to play defense or are caught out of position. Last year I was very confident that Roma would win every game, but the confidence is gone this year. It is difficult to put your finger on it. I think that our summer signings happened so late that the Team never had enough time to train together properly and figure out who they were. Spalletti has had to do so much tinkering this year just to field a starting 11.
I agree with these point and also believe confidence was a major issue. I think Roma were too complacent early on in the season expecting to achieve similar results as the year prior. When they started to drop points, it took them a long time to get back into it. As you mentioned the late signings didn't help the cause either. And Menez didn't turn out to be the player they envisioned. Also, the absences of Totti really made a major impact...Mirko lead the team, but Roma were not Roma without Totti.
Roma will have it's appeal for Mexes on Thursday, doubt they will see his sentence reduced but you never know.
Roma managed to get Mexes ban reduced to two games. He's not available this week but will return next week.
Finally a bit of luck Roma's way. Guess enough time has passed since the Inter match to not punish Roma as much.
